Paul Van Dyk

Okay well I have noticed that most people refer to Paul Van Dyk as a god. I guess this is relative to each person I mean he was here, Miami FL, last week, since Twilo closed down and while his mixing was on target his programming left me with something to be desired. He really didn't feel the crowd out too well. I mean the crowds are diffrent everywhere you go. What people are used to, (ie. what they like), here is probably completely diffrent from other places he might spin. I mean I may have my taste in music but im no idiot. I realize PVD is a pioneer and is at the forefront of his profession for a reason. I am an open minded individual and I am pretty easy to please. But Paul Van Dyk was anyhting but a god on that night. Towards the end of his set, which pretty much went nowhere, he started playing old tunes like "Des Mitchell - Welcome to the Dance" & "Tiesto pres. Allure - We Ran at Dawn" and to make it all worse in the last half hour he started spining some house tunes. As if he were intentionally trying to slow down the pace of the night. Anybody who has been around the music that long should be able to tell what a crowd wants and I think it was pretty clear that the packed crowd wanted him to pick it up a bit. Anyhow I had a good time (I always do) so I am not saying he was horrible or anyhting but definetly not GODLIKE, this, of course, is just my point of view anyone else there that night might have had a much diffrent view, like I said, it's all relative.

I can see there being a lot of debate over this. Are you from Rare Music Finder?

Yes I am, and since our SITE is being moved at th emoment I figured I's take a minute and post a little something. Since I am an avid TranceCollector and Clubber. I have my opinions, and I really don't know how to say this without sounding conceded but I hear a lot of music and I spend the majority of my time listening and now mixing and I pretty much collect every liveset or album I can find, so I feel that I am educated enough for my opinions to mean something. Many people jump on the PVD ban-wagon since he certainly has a lot of hype surrounding him. But again it all depends on what you like. Like I said it's all relative that was just my opinion I hope this doesn't start an argument. =)

Trance, check your thread in the Chill out room . By the way, some people at space that were there that night for PVD said that his set wasnt all that great. Every Dj has thier bad dayz, some have thier good. I think that sort of explains it all, I do see where your coming from trancecollector.

I haven't heard PvD live in a while, but based on his livesets, he's not impressed me since his harder ones last December... He went weak, and that was what was boring me up until that point - its like he went back to square one.

I still respect him highly, but that light trance doesn't have the enigma it used to. That's why I was hoping he was going the harder route.

Still one of my favorites...

DJs are constantly changing their style and if PvD sees that him spinning sets like that isn't to the liking of the crowd, he'll realize it and hopefully go back to his awesome style he was using back in December. All in all, he is still a God becuz he is such an excellent producer and some of his sets are amazing.

Speaking of Rare Music Finder, what's happened to that "Rollinhardon*TC" idiot?

1: PvD played like that because:

*A: People and trance escene in Miami is not so big.
*B: You cant compare Twilo with Space.
*C: I wasnt there... hehehe... Space Twats didnt let me in. so he was angry.. hehehe =p

2: PvD has only played here (in Miami) like 6 times. He knows the crowd. He knows what to play and what not. Eg: I bet if he throws Happiness people will shock!!! maybe 643 hehehe... who knows.
I heard his Gig @ Space wasnt all all good. but was nice. At least he played few goooood tracks. Also i admit Des Mitchel is kinda OLD... hehehe but........... STILL A CLAASSSIX

Hey Trancecollector!! Nice to see you here and not just on rmf!! I admit not All PvD sets are fantastic. He plays such a wide range. He can from progressive to uplighting trance in any given night. I think he has the best range and breadth of any DJ. I've never seen him in miami but, his performances @ Twilo were always the bomb-diggity. Especially his last one. His set @ Ultra wasn't bad either. Maybe he just isn't in tune with Miami vibe yet. His last couple perofrmances at Twilo were mind blowing though.

i have some of his sets from December and they were da best coz he was spinning hard german trance which i luv listening especially from him if he didnt spin dat at Space oh well 2 bad hehe

i'm definitely no expert on pvd, know alot less abt him than u guys mostly, but i still think all of his remixes and tracks he produces are kickass....just look at the way he remixed thrillseekers-synaesthesia and also sound de zign-happiness...i mean he's not the only dj that has made remixes of those tracks but for me at least his remixes are like way better than those of the other DJs...

as for the raves, i download them mainly for his track selection...i mean every set of his seems to have at least one NEW track, totally unknown and majorly kickass....heheh...case in point: the rosenmontag set...and thats just one case, i hope u'll agree...

so all in all hes an awesum DJ, and nobody is perfect, u can't possibly expect every single set of his to be perfect...

Okay, I love the PvD back in 99 - 00, the tunes were just, take for example mayday 2000, what a set, but there's some bad connections with the people here in Miami and PvD, I heard that when he came to Miami last year to do the 6 hr set, I heard he was horrible, many said that it was the worst of PvD, he was spinning music that was so not him, also, Miami is not that big in trance but its there, the house is there also, and PvD thought that since people in Miami love house, he may have thought that that would make it better.. very wrong right ?!?!
As of for the tunes , Des Mitchell - welcome to the dance, I heavent heard that track for a while , but damm what a good track that is, it's ashame that the crowd didnt get the vibe with the old classics, they do in europe where they look for the smallest details, and they still go nuts, PvD for the WMC on space, played tunes like binary finary and for an angel, I once again heard that he the crowd didnt go all that crazy, not even carl cox was able to.
So in the end, what tunes was people expecting from pvd ?!?! I mean, old classics will always cause i positive reaction on a GOOD crowd.

If that was your first, then you must of caught him on a bad night. They are VERY VERY rare ya know. Its a shame cuz my boy has seen him in miami and central florida a few times, and atlanta. Said he was the best show hes seen.


Never seen him live personally, space is 21+ so fuck that!

but imho he throws down more quality sets then anyone else around now. AVB is close behind, folowed by tiesto.

I;ve seen him once at Ultra, and he was off the hook! is wierd that at space he changes his style of music sometimes.. but I love when he throws the old classics

i still remember the first time i went to twilo, it was the fall of '99 and pvd was spinning...i remember because i had just started listening to trance at the time and all my friends kept ranting and raving about some Paul van Dyk fella...on the way to the club they kept playing tracks in the car and couldn't stop praising the guy...i got kinda annoyed and felt as though i was in for a long evening...when we finally got in the club, which took two and a half hours, he just started his set...at first i thought, how could everybody sweat this guy so hard?...then i remember that he played Xpander and i was in shock...he carried that into "forbidden fruit" and then into "for an angel"...it was really amazing and beautiful...that made me realize how much power a dj has over the crowd...that made me realize that pvd was very god-like...true in the sense that every person in the club, except for those waiting on the bathroom line, was in the palm of his hand...thats pretty god-like to me...and i guess i was also really lucky for that to be my first pvd experience...sorry tranceCollector...i wish it was yours as well...jp

My guestimate is that he wasn't so into the crowd because HE WAS SUSPOSED TO PLAY AT TWILO THAT NIGHT! Paul was probably very upset about Twilo being shut down, killing off his residency. He has said in numerous interviews that his favorite place to play is his hometown Berlin & Twilo, NYC. His sets at Twilo were MAGICAL! Tremendous energy & Great vibe. His last performance... his 2 Anniversary Party in April was PHENOMENAL! He threw For an Angel 12'' into the crowd at 10:30 am. There were still 2,000 ppl there.

i went to PVD's one year anniversary @ Twilo and it was freakin amazing...I remember i went with 10 of my friends and we all got bum pills...not once, not twice but three f@#$in times...can you believe that??...so many bs pills going around that night...as you would have imagined, my friends and i were really pissed...but we all still agree that even though we were SOBER IN TWILO, the music was amazing...no lie...f@#$in amazing...i never expected the set to be sooooooo damn good...anyhow, we found the dealer that sold us the "e" the first time and whooped his ass...for realz, how could you stay after sellin 20 bum pills to us alone...can't imagine how many this fool sold to others...must of been alot cuz this guy had a line of people buyin from him...anyhow, PVD was once again, more than I expected...damn, i was lucky enough to experience two legendary sets...sorry again trancecollector...jp

That sux, I got fake pills at the 6 element rave last summer. Luckily I found MDMA capsules later for $10.

The 1 year Anniversary March 24,00 was my first time seeing PVD. I was hooked. I was in shock when he dropped Expander & Deep Dish's Phat remix of Sexual.

we got two more pills cuz it was freakin PVD and i was really into rollin then...even though i didn't feel the first one, i was pretty determined to feel something that night...ultimately, it was just PVD's amazing set...come to think of it, Twilogoddess, you might of saw my friends and i...Well, one of my friends had a freakin leg brace over his pants that night and had crutches as well...when you walk into the main room, the left was made a vip suite, right?..well we were chillin in the left far left corner of the room...when we tried to leave at 5:30, we had to literally set up a freakin motorcade of people to escort my friend out..he would've never made it out of the club alive cuz there were too many people and his damn leg was still in a lot of pain, but this kid loves PVD so it didn't matter...shiet, we had to exit through the emergency exit doors behind the bleachers...bouncers saw him and let us all out...well, just wondering if you saw us or him...and i do remember pvd playin expander, i'm at a lost for words...( i sound like a pvd whore...hahaha) but i truly do worship him...as a dj, producer and a pioneer...jp

a friend of mine saw PVD at Space during the WMC were down there.... he said it was amazing ...Flawless mixing and amazing energy... so mayb hes not your style or he had a bad day

on Berlin they dont like Space.

Well to be honest with you I love the classics, for me I went nutz when he was playing the old tunes, I love Welcome to the Dance, I wish he would have stayed on tht vibe, but he went housy after that I dunno. Beleive it or not the miami crowd is more used to the HARDER side of trance I mean we grew up on DJ's like George Acosta which basically only spins hard Trance and the Resident @ Space is Edgar V a great DJ I might add, and he, for the most part spins really hard. But he ranges from progressive to German Trance to Crazy Techno. I mean sometimes he spins 8 or 9 hour sets and he relly displays a good range and the miami crowd really loves it when he gets hard. PVD never tried to get hard that night. I mean if I am a DJ I try to find the groove with the crowd and see what they repsond too. Me I am a lot easier to please than the rest of the crowd but a few hard rescords would have opened the door.

Right now I am listening to a SET Paul Van Dyk spun 5 days ago @ Gatecrasher and if only he had spun like this here!! wow. Great Set!
