Do you listen to the godfathers of EDM?

Do you ever listen to stuff like Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk or any other of the godfathers of EDM?

I'm sure I've missed out a few glaringly obvious ones there

I really enjoy listening to Tangerine Dream, though it was only when I started reading interviews with DJs and album sleeves that I realised people in EDM were influenced by them. If you can get hold of it the Livemiles album is an interesting listen......

Yep, it was Jean Michel Jarre who I forgot....

YES YES YES

WE MUST NOT FORGET OUR RICH TECHNOCULTURAL HERITAGE

I listen to Kraftwerk and a lot of New Wave (Gary Numan, etc.).

Posted by Torley Wong on May-24-2004 04:01:

Gary Numan is an icon, although now his style is different he is still actively making music! From the New Wave I also like synth maestro Thomas Dolby, and who can forget Flock of Seagulls? Many names I am missing here, but a lot of good stuff. Ahhh the excess of the 80s!

A question, does anyone else here enjoy the music of , say, YMO, Wendy Carlos, Klaus Schulze, Isao Tomita, Kitaro, or Yanni to name a few? (and yes, I am serious about Yanni - esp. earlier works like Keys to Imagination.)

Afrika Bambataa

Some, like Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Juan Atkins. Damn hard to get anything from these guys in Norway though.

Well to be honest my Dad is a big fan, went to see them play in Oxford when he was at Uni there back in the 1970s!!! I bought him a copy of Livemiles a few years back and thought I'd give it a listen and thought it was awesome so I made an MD copy! I regularly listen to the Livemiles album (today for revision) and think the Berlin concert from about 17mins on in incredible, so much going on that blends so well

Also listen a lot to the Dream Sequence, Tyger, Rockoon and Tyranny of Beauty albums, not so much Goblins Club but there are dozens of TD albums out there. Also TD related is Christopher Frankes (was in TD until 1987, left the day after the Livemiles Berlin concert was recorded) albums 'Pacific Coast Highway' and 'The London Concert'

Another pioneer and still in the game, William Orbit, the Strange Cargo series is pretty awesome and have Strange Cargo III and SC Hinterland on a lot of my playlists.

i always see tangerine dream records in the store, but i've yet to pick one up and listen...what is it like? i might just have to swing by today and take a listen...

Posted by Torley Wong on May-24-2004 19:41:

Floorfiller: Hmmm... a good starting point would be "The Best of Tangerine Dream" 2CD... it doesn't contain all of the greatest stuff they've done, but like I said, it's a good starting point. What do they sound like? Well they (really, Edgar Froese and multiple lineup changes throughout the years) are well-known for having a lush, hypnotic ambient sound -- it can *sometimes* be likened to trance music without the beats. They pioneered some of the trancey effects of trance, like the arpeggiator ostinato (when a pattern of notes bounces back and forth, basically).

BUT, their later stuff does have more prominent rhythms. They have gone through many phases, and their music on the whole is diverse. Another of my favorites from the newer era is "Dream Mixes" (just the first vol.) -- and yes, I'd definitely call some of this trance. They remix their older works into a new form. It's straightforward but effective, the arrangements are catchy, and the melodies are memorable. It was released in 1995 IIRC.

Good stuff. On the William Orbit tip, no kidding! What's the man been up to lately? I haven't checked in a lot on Orbit news... I really, really was amazed at what he did with Madonna. I didn't quite find Mirwais' later collaborations to be my cup of tea, but things like the whole Ray of Light album were wonderful.

Posted by fbgdavidson on May-24-2004 21:10:

Dont know what Mr Orbit has been up to lately, the only thing that springs to mind is some work with Pink

I know he is pretty much a producer but does he ever do live sets? I've never seen or heard of any
