CDs that have not matched your expectations...

I really liked Safri Duo before, when they made Played-A-Live. I still like that track. Really.
So I was really excited about their new album. Then I heard All the people in the world. It's nearly enough to make you cry.

Crystal Method - Legion of Boom

From Tweekend to Community Service (God, what the hell?) to their most recent release.

Damn it. I loved Vegas and Tweekend.

I was very disapointed with Faithless's first album, I was expecting tracks like Insomnia, The album only had two good songs on it, But the rest was all crap.

+1 on that, what the? With the number of artists that collaborated with them on these tracks they could have done better...

I also have to say Ferry Corsten - "Right of Way"

I wasn't too impressed by this, I guess I was expecting more songs along the lines of "Punk" and "RYBR" with the big dirty filtered sounds, but a lot of the album was just boring.

Amen to that, though my version of it had two good remixes as well. Is their second album better?

Crystal Method have had some AMAZING singles. I could not get into Legion of Boom either... I tried, really hard -- but it was like a cut-and-paste job on a lot of loops without any of their usual sinewy flare. The repeated hooky samples which before were used to great effect, kind of bored me here... like I expected something "more" out of Rahzel working with them! I know it's not just me getting old and jaded either

Sorry to Scott and Ken but I'm still looking forward to the next album you guys put out! I will NEVER forget "Keep Hope Alive", esp. its parallel to crackdown on raves.

You know, I'm just going to have to face the fact that there are many great Electronic Dance Music singles, but great Artist Albums (of original works and not DJ mixes -- although something like Sasha's Involver prompts way for new hybridization) on the whole are rare in proportion. The Prodigys of the world who can have both strong singles and strong albums are comparatively rare.

Oh... you know what got me down? I really liked that Benny Benassi "Satisfaction" thing AND the video too, but stretched over the course of an entire album -- I could not stomach that.

Hey, I'm with you there. Their use of live percussion bangin' with trance sounds is really, really exciting and must be exciting to watch live on stage too. Alas . . .

(I presume you're referring to Sunday 8 PM) If you're only expecting tracks like Insomnia, no. The only tracks that come close to Insomnia in style on their 2nd album are God is a DJ and Take the long way home.

Their third album Outrospective also contains only two of those tracks, We come 1 and Tarantula. Same for the upcoming fourth album No Roots (don't know if there are exactly two 'dance tracks' on them).

But keep in mind Faithless is not just a dance act.

Armin Van Buuren - 76

I'd rather listen to Dj Sammy ;\

An artist who is versatile and diverse is often faced with a double-edged sword dilemma:

For example, you hear a single on the radio or whatever and you REALLY like it, and you get the CD... only to find out the rest of the CD sounds nothing like it at all. I mean, it may still be good, but not to your taste.

The reverse is also true... you really like a single, and you get the CD... and every other song on there sounds like that single. Like, variations on a theme, but without the "variations" part! LOL

Some CDs are growers too (Avril Lavigne's new CD is beginning to do this to me). Some CDs, you hide away and re-discover later, and are amazed at why you didn't pay closer attention the 2nd time around. Some CDs, no matter how much you listen to... you just can't get into it.

And why is it that you know an artist has usually peaked after they release a "Greatest Hits" album? I mean, the name is sort of self-explanatory, but still . . .

Damn faithless. "I know, we'll have two dance tracks on each album so dance lovers also buy it!"

Posted by basd on May-25-2004 07:34:

It's just one of their styles. That's what I like about them, they don't stick to the same style all over an album.

I don't know how some artists can do this and I immensely enjoy it, while other artists leave me confused, frustrated (in a bad way), and puzzled. I guess it's subjective.

I like BT mixing up styles, Moby not so much on some of his albums (I felt Play was cohesive and not so much scattered as Everything Is Wrong, but then again, 18 was too samey IMO)... I like some of the Faithless singles but I'm not too sure about their albums on the whole.

Sometimes you just gotta be in the mood. But it can be a disconcerting break when styles are mixed up... I'm sure some of you remember these:

-Orbital's "Quality Seconds" on Snivilization
-FSOL's last "hidden" track on Dead Cities (which I don't think was actually by them)

What are some others?

TigerClaw, is that Markus Schulz smiling in your avatar?????

I've never seen the guy look anything other than a miserable bugger!

Armin Van Buuren - 76 was dissapointing but only because it has far too much vocals on it. It's still well produced.

Paul Van Dyk - Reflections made me realise that after listening to his music for nine years I have to cave in to the opinion that he is past his sell-by date and has dissapeared up his own arse. I heard him interviewed recently and he knew nothing about his releases, when he was net playing. I think he has become a product. "New PVD, every club should have one ! only $99.95 !"

Tiesto - Just Be is better than I thought but still nothing special.

Got to say this tho and I don't wanna get flamed, I'm only voicing my opinions, but for me (and a lot of my friends) Ferry's album has been the best artist album of the last year, I really dig it.

All the Dave Pearce Euphoria CDs

Who puts Milky - Just The Way You Are on a trance CD?????

Just comapre what Dave Pearce was putting on the Euphoria CDs to say Matt Darey, PF Project, Red Jerry or J'00'F

The Future Sound of London- Lifeforms.

After all the massive Internet hype of this album, I was expecting more than a total drenching of synth spheres. Dead Skin Cells is the only track I enjoy on the album, and I'm quite a fan of FSOL's other stuff (not just their dancy first album).
