Darude cut short at Club Dome Sat 16th
Hey good Montrealians! (?)
I spun at the Dome tonight. For a brief hour+. I was thrown out of my own set. Almost physically so. And I was called the worst amateur in history. Because of what? I did not play Sandstorm when *the Boss* wanted me to. You know what, I was going to, in the end of the set as I usually do. In some form. But not when he wanted me to. Why? Attitude? Maybe a little. More so because IT DID NOT FIT RIGHT THEN AND THERE. And I don't jump when someone tells me "I've been in this business for eleven years and I know this stuff and this HOUSE* music is clearing the floor...". Well, the floor was not jam-packed during all my set (but was too every now and then when people heard something they recognized) but it had good 200+ (or something) people even at the slower moments.
So He gave me an option: "Play Sandstorm right now and end your set short (at 1:45, I was booked for 12:30 to 03:00) or I'm gonna take the music down". Well, I took the music down myself. But He wanted it back up quickly. Silence in a club is powerful. Obviously that was asking for trouble... I got to mix another track in and then the house sound system took over with r'n'b or hiphop or something. I was escorted out by these huge security guys and followed by *the Boss* who yelled "nice" comments ("You didn't earn a penny of the money I paid you, you f*****g amateur, you're done etc...") to me all the way out.
I was doing what I've done for some time (not "11 years" but still a good five years) and I think I was doing pretty well. It's not rare the floor thins out a bit when the dj spins a touch more progressive or non-top40 stuff in a commercial club. They obviously didn't know what they booked (wanting Sandstorm only) but I still kept a great core crowd going, obviously a whole bunch of people who were liking it a lot, even if I say it myself. I'm sorry my HOUSE* music didn't do it for Him.
(Btw, I've played an hour live set there before 2-3 years ago but even my live set is not the same thing anymore and especially the dj set is a bit harder/more prog/whatever.)
I wanted to let you know that it was not me who wanted the music to stop (or change to other stuff) and I wanted to play the stuff I play and make no compromises (or not at least a huge one... don't get me wrong, I can, and I do, finetune my set according to the crowd but...)
Thanks for the people who showed up because of me for a nice hour+. And I'm sorry for any inconvenience eventhough it was not my fault.

P.S: I like the "political/ethical" weight of this board. A Dj explaining himself overhere will be listened and understood. And then we'll all talk about that to our friends, which will do the same, ...

ok I hope you got paid for this.
I think the problem is that those people they stick an image of you as a top40 dj. You were hired to play in front of the wrong crowd.
And they hire you for a dj set when they know that hip hop fills the floors. Even if you had played Sandstorm it wouldn't had made a difference... All these gino's want is hip hop.
I think I heard an had on the radio and they said your name with sandstorm playing in the background. They only know you for this.
Next time you come to Montreal tell us were you're going to play.
I will go hear your set.

Darude, you played an awesome set, dont worry about it.
On the flyers for Sat the 16th of October it was basically your face, with Sandstorm and Feel The Best written right under it. Either way nice to see that tracklist, most of us were dancing the whole night

I really hope not all club owners are like dat,anyways, already that i have a bad opinion on clubs.
In afterhours, you would have had ur ass kicked out for spinning Sandstorm

Hope this didn't give you a negitive view on Montreal, I've heard their after hours are one of the best in the country.
Well Darude...from the tracklist you posted. I kinda regret not comin to dome that night! I really thought they were gonna do to you like they did to all the other artists that came; make them play two of their songs and thats it. But wow man, If I would have been there I would have been on the dancefloor for your whole set. Mainstream Montrealers are very CLOSE MINDED. They only listen to what is popular at the moment and wtv is played on MIX 96. I go to these clubs expecting to hear NONE of the songs you played but thank you for sticking it to the boss and playing what you like. Shows that you're the bigger man...and as for that boss...fuck him. I just hope this won't change your mind on returning. Montreal has a lot to offer you just went to the wrong place. If you come back I'm there guarenteed!
God Damnn,?!?!?, Hey man, if i was able to, i'd set up a dj booth on ste-catherine right in front of Dome and let u play any funken trax u want, ..., i know i would be there
But since i can't really make it happen, all i gotta say is i agree with what all was said in reply to this, ..., that's really not the welcome u deserved from our city (even though it only came from one particular club that don't mean nothing to pretty much all of us!)

Hmmmmm, Darude, that was very nice of you to actually come here and post this, few comments:
1-a friend of mine was at Dome the night you played and was like: Hey, what the f*k? Darude cut his set in the middle. Well, now i'll tell him the real story so that he goes and tells the other people that were there abotu the real incident. Your story deserves to be heard
2-"Forced to play sandstorm" isnt that sick? It's your set, your TL, you do whatever you want with it!
3-nice TL by the way, wish i was there, i just never knew about it, i thought it was the weekend comin up
4-Dome = not the right place to be for trance - simply....People wont be able to react properly when they get Automanual or no one on earth or anything else from your playlist. They're just used to: "California Dreaming - bababababababa"
5-Come back to a better club and have a comeback set - this will kill Dome........
Anyway, sorry to hear about your story.....
If the "Boss" wanted you to play Sandstorm so much, why didn't he just put it in your contract? lol
