XenocreatoR - Cranium Storm Rev2 (195kbps FULL)

*EDIT* updated to REVISION 2. please review...

Hi all,

Ive been working on this tune for 4 months on & off again. It is sort of the side tune that I always go back to when having a break from my major projects. This song has become a bit of a blur to me. I need some criticism on it to tweek her up & finish her off. Have a listen & tell me what you think:

Stream & MP3 here: http://www.audiostreet.net/artist.aspx?artistid=19927

Notes:
-It's experimental techtrance. Have fun with it.
-Not yet mastered. Levels may be low so TURN HER UP. crank up the noise!!

Xeno.

The direct link isn't working.
Wierd intro effects, after listening for another two minutes it fits with the rest of the track. Wierd! But cool! I like the phaser effect on the melody thing. Lots of cool sounds after 3:50
I like this stuff. Not like what you see here @ TA every day, great work!

Glad to weird you out. My style throws some people off to begin with, but I hope they keep with it to see how the song pans out to the grunting crecsendo ending. Thanks for giving it a listen Arctic Breeze.

With the emphasis on experimental Haha this is some weird shit, for some reason it is a kind of fun track. I don't really like the melodies, I don't like the beat, there is no real feel to this track, but it is quite original I'll grant you that

Cheers,

Nomen Nescio

I think it's interresting to listen to this stuff, to see how other people uses different sounds and wraps them all together in a tune. You don't see a lot of that in the mainstream.

LOL my shit is usually weird. This one definitely is not an emotional progessive trance track that youd expect to hear on the radio It is more of a darker underground trance style. It will be interesting to see if it hits a chord with anyone as their 'cup of tea'.

Maybe the beat could be changed. Im open to any ideas.

Thanks for giving it a go anyways Nomen Nescio

Yeh, I can hear the tech in it. Very nice.

The melodic elements are barely audible behind the percs in the intro. Fix those levels.

Around 3:55 is awesome.

I kind of felt weirded out by the much... happier feel in this track. Is that what you were going for?

Personally I can't ever see myself making mainstream music. But I am hoping that there will be a few open minded people that enjoy my twisted creations.

It is quite interesting to see what choices people make with the sounds they use. I quite enjoy being caught off guard & spun out by a trippy sound that I havent heard used in a particular way before. I try to do it myself & am forever exploring new sounds by fiddling with filters/effects.

Yes the intro level for the first 2 minutes needs to be fixed. I suppose it takes a while for this turn to whined up. The initial bass on the MP3 sounds muffled & compressed.

The main rhythm of the tune has 8 bars uplifting trance & then 8 more bars of confused notes jumbled togetherer that are meant to scramble the minds eye. It must creat a strain on the brain whilst interpreting the information. The resultant I think is a happy yet tense feeling. My aim was to have it become more energetic over time.

Thanks for the feedback thoughtlessjex.

Hey man, I really dig this. You've used a lot of very original sounds. You must have spent ages on this, theres so many little noises and fx.

It doesnt feel very danceable, but then I guess your aiming for more of an ecclecting experiemntal tip. I could certinaly imagine chilling out to this with a few reefers.

I think the melody could do with some more variation perhaps and the percussion could benefit from some more drive or variation, but like you say, your trying out new things so maybe its how you envisioned it.

I dub thee psycheese

Im glad you like it!

I have a fetish to tweek racks, scolling through sounds & adding effects to morph sounds. It is a fetish that can sometimes be a huge time waster Too much fun without getting anyting done!!

You are right. I do not think this track is suited for a night club. It is more of a cruising track whilst driving or a mental ride for when youre chillen out. I beleive trance needs to evolve & I will not limit myself to 'dance' tracks. This one is going down a techtrance road without boundarys, regulations or limitations.

I will have a think about putting more variations into the melody. Maybe parts will be helped by adding intelligent midrange poly-synth layers.... I will also take onboard the percussion suggestion. How the song is driven is very important. Thankyou for bringing this to my attention.

I appreciate this reply Axolotyl. thnx

Hah, love it!

It's so trippy and happy at the same time... if you work a bit more in the percussion (giving it a banging tribal feel), this would give the tune more energy and it should become, well, perfect

nice track, definatly creative melody a couple suggestions

- try for a bit more bottom end sound, there isnt much bass in teh track but that my have been your goal

- tone down teh bongos a bit, they seem to overpower your lead synths

teh effects you have added to your synths sound really good.

keep up the good work

thanks colonelcrisp. Good advise. Im considering adding another bass layer to it. The bass on this mp3 really does sound muffled....

Hey no problemo, always happy to review a fellow aussie =) I know what you mean though. I really love the uplifting sound but I feel trance really needs to start evolving too if its going to survive. I dont think trance has ever died, but its had periods of stagnation and I'm afraid we're starting to head into one of those now. Good to see people not afraid to experiment and like you say... tweak the hell out of their sounds rather than just dialing up a supersaw.

I'll definately keep an eye out for more of your productions. I too am 'trying' to blend in some psy elements to other genres. Hopefully I'll be able post up one of my messes soon for you to check out

All the best with your productions mate!

Lol, what a wicked production.

I can't say i'll be listening allot to it, but once or twice is sure refreshing.

Some things sound a bit random to me, like the choir but meh, who cares

Posted by Romi on Apr-08-2005 09:26:

Indeed a very original trancer here. I like the wicket percussion in it, the melodies are nice too, but sometimes they get a bit too strange imo. Nice techy feel to it (a bit of a Kraftwerkian sound with all the acid and bleeps). Well, i don't know what you were smoking when you made this , but i think it turned out as a bit strange, but very original trance track.

download-link doesn't work for me.. Neither does the streaming

Posted by Subtle on Apr-08-2005 10:39:

listening:

not much power in the kick there, bongos are cool, as usuall it takes some time to get used to the "melodic" elements u got int there.. i think there could have been some more float and drive to the percussions here.. i like the way t3h melodies builds it self up.. the part with the pers raid on about 6:30 is really cool, the whole things sounds a bit random maybe (a bit) i could have imagined some really sharped edged sounds coming in later in the track, its a bit repetetive as i think u could have added something else to make the listener wait for, as u did in around 6:30...

Posted by linkmage on Apr-08-2005 11:12:

Claps-to clapy
Bongo drums-cool
intro-to liquid
Idea-very cool, but from my opinion need a little more pads(harmonic painting)
Flanger-to much

Good work,thnx...keep goooooiiiin

Fot the end: I liked...sound is'nt undergroundy,but I think Idea IS.

This could be actually a new style of trance, or maybe a new style of music!! That is a good thing IMO.

It IS original, when I began to listen to it, I thought it was very weird for my taste, and still is, I can feel the melody but sometimes it confuses me.

Production wise there is nothing I can really point out, is well produced mate, perhaps due that it was revised before I had the chance to check the first version.

Not my cup of tea, and not sure if this is trance evolving, I'd rather say it is another style of trance being born.

Posted by iloop on Apr-13-2005 02:46:

this is pretty out there and it distorts a lot. Has some elements of trance that are kind of intriguing, but not my preffered style...
Also there seems to be no progression anywhere, there's the same melodic line for 7minutes...

Posted by Axolotyl on Apr-13-2005 07:14:

Just listened to the revision. It sounds a lot clearer and the percs seem a lot tighter. Nice work.

Is the intro different too? It seems to have a bit of a buildup there. Cool, it certainly has more pogression and drive now and I would say its a lot more dancable too.

Infact its got a fairly strong Sphongle feel to it (aka Simon Posford). Good work dude. Definately one of the more original productions I've seen on these boards =)

Unfortunately, I didnt get to hear the first version so here's my review for the new one
Interesting tribal-type drums, I like the dynamics of them, they sit very well in the mix and support the flow.
Your track is definately not Mainstream ... In fact it is, like PDM pointed out, pretty original. Very weird stuff. I personally have difficulties with the melody progressions because they seem so non-harmonic and random, but in a strange way, it works. Maybe you could be pioneering a new genre here?
Anyway, the synthwork is really strange, but the track flows excellently. Even though you have no variation in the chord progression itself, youre constantly altering the synth sounds, it seems to become weirder and weirder! I love how they are morphing into each other, very impressive.
I think this is very difficult stuff (at least to me), but very refreshing to hear something original, well-produced in trance ... Only one thing. I dont think this is very danceable, so what about a Shponglish breakbeat-version of it?
