subtle strings....

i need a little help, im trying to introduce a set of strings in like the first few seconds of a track, i dont want it to be loud i just want it to be very low/subtle but able to be heard. now ive adjusted them somewhat and they sound fine, but when i go into my headphones for a closer listen they are not as quiet as id hoped but when i listen through monitors theyre very quiet and really hard to hear. what are a few options/techniques to get them at a good low volume but able to be heard and know that theyre there when listening through my monitors.also am i going crazy because i think theyre louder than i expected when listening through headphones?whats a good way to correct this prob. thanks.

If your monitors are reliable, just thrust your monitors. Some elements will always sound different in headphones, that's why you should always do your final mix on monitors.

Also, if you've been mixing for a while, just take a break from all music or other loud sound for an hour or so and let your ears "reset" themselves. Sometimes things that seem "unfixable" won't after a break.

Take a break as jingles says, but your problem here is obviously not a levels problem, it's an EQ problem. Your cans and monitors have a very different frequency response - most likely the cans brighten the highs and warm up the bass, which is what cans often do, especially the ones marketed toward DJs.

Getting a track to sound good on multiple sources is probably the second-biggest challenge of production (the first is getting it to sound good on any source). It's very likely that the headphones are "wrong" and the monitors are "right", but you still need to listen on a variety of different sources and EQ your track/elements accordingly so that it sounds reasonably good on all of them.
