Around what freq do kicks extend?

I've been experimenting with layering 909/808 kicks, and I'm a noob so I'm just wondering whats the typical freq range for a kick from low to high? And is all the rumble below like..40Hz or so? The low range is easier to tell but I don't know whats typical for the high range

Here's a sample:
Keep in mind this is a first effort!

909 3-layer

criticism much appreciated!!! if you think its terrible then say so and then tell me why so i can learn

add a spectral analysis plugin and check it out ! every kick is different

well I've been trying to EQ so that I use a low, mid, and high from 3 different kicks and i was just wondering around what freq i should should start cutting the highs

get used to doing 2 first, anyway id say 4-6khz+ for the high end part of the kick. for the low end of your kick 40hz and below is way too low, the low end kick should be lowpassed around 80hz.

your kick is rubish, no high end at all you need something there, and really no low end either too punch. use this as your mid kick dont throw it away.

if the big hunk of the kick is at 100 hz is that ok?

whats the cure for this? or at least, what would you do to fix it? use one kick with more low end and another with more high end?

id use this as my mid kick, and layer it with a low end fatty low passed around 80hz, and a high end hitter highpassed around 4khz

the cure for u would be to buy some good kick samples, learn how to eq and compress them to taste....

Posted by kitphillips on Jan-08-2007 05:37:

I think rumble is mainly just above the 40 hz mark, everything below is inaudible. So most small speakers will just pass straight over it.
I'm really not sure as to whether you should high pass your kick, on the one hand it will avoid false triggering your limiters etc, but on the other, you'll lose that stuff in a club which will jump out the subs and hit people in the chest and shake the floors etc. So if that's why your asking about the rumble, consider that.

well i'm frustrated...can't get a kick to sound anywhere near decent. guess i'll just keep at it

Personally I wouldnt waste time trying to craft a decent kick myself. Just get a good sample pack of kicks, pick one you like and get on with the rest of the song. Nobody will know if you made it yourself or not and no one will give a shit either way.

I agree. I used to make my own kicks in the past. And it sounded like shit. Lately I've been using samples and it's much easier to get a clean mix now. My old kicks were too boomy and made my basslines sound muddy.

Posted by jey on Jan-08-2007 10:54:

exactly! i use mostly vengeance kicks, personally i couldnt produce kicks like that in a million yrs so y bother trying, pick a kick eq an compress to taste an whoop there it is!

Posted by thesuperfunk on Jan-08-2007 15:22:

kicks generally get a boost around 100, cut at 250 and a boost somewhere between 4-6k

Posted by cl0ckw3rk on Jan-08-2007 23:01:

okay then...whats the best sample pack to check out for kicks? i don't know what "vengeance" is

Posted by thesuperfunk on Jan-08-2007 23:04:

I'd go with either the Vengeance series or the Thomas Penton samples ...

I've always liked Ueberschall Techno Trance Essentials for their less hardstyle approach, more Ferry Corsten clean type of sound.

I also had a look around and found this today, it's Big Fish Audio 'Rush'. It seems like a good deal and sound, anyone tried it?

I'm sure any of these or superfunks sample packs would do the trick.

Hey jey, I was gonna ask you something over PM but I'm knackered right now. I'll get back to you later.

Posted by jey on Jan-09-2007 00:30:

Synchronicity!!

no problemo matey, gettin that way myself, when ur ready

Posted by cl0ckw3rk on Jan-09-2007 01:48:

wow i've got a lot to learn about all this stuff...gotta stay persistent

ok would someone plz let me hear a "good" kick? I won't use it or anything, I just want to hear the difference between what you think is a good solid kick and the crap that I've been playing with all day to get to sound half-decent

yes, i've read all the tutorials but its just putting into practice that I have trouble with...My ears aren't expereinced, hence bad EQ/compression

This is a kick and bass compressed together..no I'm not proud of it but I think its an improvement from the last one!

Dont use 909 samples because it will take too much time to make anything useful from them.

i'm too focused on minor details..i bet after i get a good kick i'm gonna get stuck on the percussion..i'll never get to the other stuff

ok here we go guys...vengeance vs. penton...votes?

Posted by jey on Jan-09-2007 17:38:

without doubt vengeance!!

im kinda stuck on precussion, can mix and eq it fairly well, can also make some nice sounding lead sounds but trying to put these together with a bassline!!!

will get there though!

vip-zone do a kick pack that consists of 300 kicks i think! i have it but havnt it loaded in at the min, they are great sounding kicks of all types, vip-zone do free samples to so check it!

www.vipzone-samples.com

The VIPZONE free kicks are very dirty and gritty sounding but they are also how should I say, sucky. They sound good but they need cleaning up to use in a good mixdown.

I wouldn't know about their pay sample pack. I didn't buy it from the looks of the freebies.
