'Blind' production.

Over at discogs there was a thread posted about making a track with your speakers off, not being able to hear the samples you are using. I think the first result posted below is rather amusing and it'd be cool if people on TA gave this a crack too.

Howdy y'all. The idea hit me earlier to construct a track consisting entirely of audio I have never heard before and with no hints as to it's content other than the waveform as represented in the sequencing software I used.

So! I had a friend pick out 15 different wavs and send them over while I constructed this track with my speakers off.

I challenge y'all to make more. Requires at least one other person to send you audio files or something like that.

Someone has been nice enough to provide some samples here:

15 randomly chosen, randomly named wav files. No peeking.

Fixed.

This could be quite hilarious. Do we have to use EQ?

Man I can see mine being absolutely atrocious.

LOL.

I might try this. I assume we can use effects, too?

Do whatever you like, as long as it's with your speakers off.

Wow this looks like a lot of fun, for sure going to try this out. I'll post the results tonight when i start / finish.

lol sounded like shit

Okay, I am going to try this. Those random samples plus effects in Live, no monitoring whatsoever. I will make it about two minutes long I guess. Should have it posted up in the next couple hours. :-)

I was disappointed in that some of it (especially at the beginning) actually sounded decent rather than absurd, although it gets a bit goofy in parts. Still a fun exercise, though.

It seems to have a pretty cool film noir vibe to it. I could hear it being played in an action scene of a retro 50s film. Of course, it might work for a porn film as well.

I'm going to try some simpler variations on this experiment later on.

lol

Nice one. That was kinda cool.

I did this once a long time ago, but I generally knew what type of samples I was using for percussion by their filenames. The real challenge I created for myself, however, was programming the synths with no sound. I'll see if I can dig that project up.

I'm gonna give this one a go though, should be fun!

BTW, that soundcloud clip sounds like something out of a speedcore track, especially towards the end. lol

That's actually fucking good! I really enjoyed it! Are you sure you didn't do this with speakers?

Haha, yes. I could see kicks and snares clearly by their waveforms, and long, continuous-looking waveforms I guessed were probably either strings or pads of some kind, but other than that I had no idea what I was putting in there, just the arrangement and timing of it.
