On and off for a few years. Never anything seriously though. Just as and when I get time between work/uni.

Any suggestions on where to take it?

Keep it simple straight forward trancer? Or maybe go in another flow?

Edit - Thank you by the way!

Well, first thing I'd at the stage your at is move some of those notes so it wasn't a remix anymore but an orignal track ;-)

More top end around 8000htz on your lead synth (what have you made this on?) and cut everything below 300ktz, this will sound much tastier!

A Few more layers percussion and it's getting somewhere cool!

too much trebble on your sfx thing ;-) maybe shelf everything above 17,000htz off so it's not so harsh on the ear.

Sounds cool tho dood, could be even sweeter!

Thanks!

I'll look into it, just a mess around thing!

Lead is synth1, as is the bass and pad.

The acid lead is a TS404.

I'll fix that effects thing. It's way too loud in the mix, but I got bored lol.

Thanks for your pointers! Any tunes you got I can check?

Will do man, means a lot.

Any pointers on compression?

At the moment I simply use a fast attack compressor on certain channels to catch peaks that are eating my headroom.

People mention slow attack compression, where would this be used? I've tried it but can't seem to figure it out!

What's your's typical mix down technique?

Posted by gregmuzza on Apr-17-2010 10:39:

I dont usually use long attack compression, not much anyway, I only really use the attach to create punch. Compression is a nightmare, everyone has their own idea of how it should be used, and in my opinion, it's used to much these days, everyone is competing for their track to be the loudest, and man, sometimes it just gets too much, even the breakdowns are loud! AGH!

But that said compression is very important if your making dance music especially. You need to think about using compressors for lots of reasons, not just keeping peaks down. Most of the time i use no attack at all. But the release is important. It's too much to explain on here im afraid.

As for mixdown. Some low ratio rms compression on your output strip, and a mulitband eq to really get the general eq right, then bounce it down and use a brick wall limiter in a wave editor like soundforge. Easy peasy. You can go mental on mastering, it will drive you mad and spiol the fun, hehe.

Much appreciated.

Thanks again, look forward to your next release!

What's your monitoring set up like btw?

I don't like spending money on gear because I know I'll never see a return on it and right now I got more important things to buy!

None the less, I bought some second hand Fostex PM1's last year and love them. However I need a soundcard, what you running?

All my other gear is ITB (and cheapo free shit too haha!).

Posted by gregmuzza on Apr-17-2010 14:40:

you dont need to spend a fortune, my entire setup is prolly less that 1000, I used Alessis m1 active monitors and and old version of logic audio (5.1) on a beat up old pc thats prolly 8 years old!! And i can get a reasonable sound out of all that. Oh and a DMX 6fire soundcard. Could prolly pick up one of them cheap these days.

email me on [email protected] if you wanna keep chatting

Peace out, I'm off to the pub!

Nice, will do!

Bounced down a draft full version 320kbs if anyone is interested.

Will add more to it and refine some of the filtering, etc. At a later date.

sounds great!!

Pretty explosive once this gets going! Nice synths and amazing acidline, it just needs a bigger punchier kick and some inventive percussion to really modernise it. I also agree that you should substitute a new melody in there and use this for one of your own tracks!

Holy shit is that really Greg Murray..

Indeed.

Nice 303 line. I think that there is a lot of room for improvement. Everything sound bare and dry right now to me, more like a foundation instead of a full track.

I would work on introducing new elements into it and perhaps try working on a more unique structure.

Ha ha everyone is loving the acid line, was the easiest thing to make out the track!

I might try and rework the arrangement, but atm I am getting a bit bored of it.

Can you expand on the dry bare and dry? The lack of percussion was a concious decision since I wanted most of the drive to come from the main synth, which eat up a shit load of headroom in the mix. That's also the reason why I stripped back a lot of elements so when it comes back in at 4.40 it just launches the track off again.

It's never meant to be a sophisticated work, just a full on trancer. Party kinda tune.

But if you would explain some of your comments a bit more I'd be grateful, thanks for your review!

I should've worded my comment more appropriately

Personally, I prefer my tracks to be full of different sounds that really grip the listener. With trance I rarely find this, but I forget that it's music made with a dancefloor in mind!

I guess that in this case less is more, so definitely take my criticism with a grain of salt.

Not at all man I welcome the comments! Just wasn't sure what you meant.

It was made 110% with the dancefloor in mind, I know it needs fixing, I'll sort it someday.

Thanks again.

Yeah it was a rought draft, not sure what sound you mean at 2.03? Dodgy filter job perhaps?

I'll sort it out proper soon. Thanks for your comments anyway, I'll check your track now.
