METROPOLITAN TRANNY AUTHORITY presents: 'GENREF/CK'
So I've recorded the first installment of a series of mixes I'm doing for my 'Metropolitan Tranny Authority' DJ project.
The series is called 'GENREF/CK', which for those of you who don't know is a play on the word 'genderfuck', which is a conscious effort to subvert traditional gender norms. It's long been a goal of mine as a DJ to break down the walls of musical genres too, and so my 'Genref?ck' was born. I'd like to think it features a pretty edgy mixing style, with plenty of custom edits and mashups.
This mix is kind of an introduction to my new project, and an introduction to me, personally. This is a pretty representative slice of my musical brain and soul. And in opposition to my last mix, which was borne out of a rough patch in my life, this mix is celebratory, fun, and dance-oriented - like my live DJ sets. It's also kind of about this crazy city I live in, by proxy, and its recent history.

Checkin' it, looks fun.
Do you still have your own hosting? I'd love to listen to this at work but of course, Soundcloud is blocked. Looks like a diverse and interesting selection of music, I've noticed some transgendered artists in there as well. Always up for hearing "Tears" again too, one of my all-time faves.

very groovy. nice mix. bumbadabump.
Will check it.
this was pretty sweet, i loved the 2nd half, can you tell me about that music?
Starting where? What do you want to know exactly?
The last half features a lot of music that one would call 'post disco' or 'proto house', and then some classic chicago house. It's music that would have been played in the Paradise Garage in the 80s. The Mr. Fingers track is kind of italo-disco and synth pop oriented, and the Terre Thaemlitz Track is more of a retrospective of House Music, which I included as both a bridge into the modern soul of the Billy Love track (a Theo Parrish Production), and because I value Terre's worldview and artistic perspective as a transgender person/gender theorist, and a theorist on music and culture. House Music is indeed controlled desire you can own.
The mix as a whole runs more or less in a chronological order, and then the last track is sort of an "Amen", a track which means a lot to me personally.
In general I selected tracks with special attention given to the messages and vocals, and tried to put them together to create some kind of meaningful dialogue between them in the transition, but also across the mix as a whole.
Mostly though it's just music I love, arranged in a very thoughtful and hopefully entertaining way.
no disrespect, but i didnt care for your message at all(im more into beats), i find sets get lost in translation a lot of the time.
07. Zwischenfall - Katastrophe is very sweet, i cant find much about it.
the tracks im most interested in are 37-77 i believe. quite enjoyed Virgo - Going Thru Life / Frankie Knuckles - Tears , its very progressive house synthy.
p.s. im quite drunk.

Interesting selection of tunes, I took a listen to this a few times already. My favorite part was the housey/garagey stuff towards the end, of course. Frankie Knuckles, Patrice Rushen, and Mr Fingers especially. I also really dug the Talking Heads track, was listening to that part on repeat the other day.
My only complaint was with the mixing... it seems you've gone for a more energetic, full-on style where a number of mixes were out of sync. I think that there were a good number of spots where the tracks could have been beatmatched very easily (and I know you're quite adept at beatmatching) but you went for quick, cut-up mixing that clanged a bit.
But keep in mind, this is entirely personal preference. I know exactly what you were going for with the mixing (and I've lurked in the whole Theo Parrish thread so I know your opinions on beatmatching :P), and of course I like smooth blending (a byproduct of me getting into DJing by way of progressive house and the early GU series) :P
