Worst year of trance.
A lot of people have been going on about 1999 was the best year.
Im kinda curious, has there ever been, just a really shitty year for trance (in between 1990-2002)? I'm fairly new to the trance scene, so i dont know much about the history.
People on these forums have been saying that 2001 was awefull.
2001 was the worst? Hehe, I'd disagree...
In a year when Urban Train, Moments Are Forever, Souvenir De Chine, For A Lifetime and countless other gems I can't think of, I don't see how someone can claim that 2001 is the worst.
Personally I think that after trance exploded onto the scene in 1998/99 that the following 2 years saw some of the worst stuff. Alot of DJ's went commercial and were playing shit that they thought would appeal to everyone.
A great example would be to listen to Oakenfolds GU - New York (the 1998 classic) and then listen to some of his newer stuff. I know this is picking out one DJ and generalizing but I think it gives a pretty good analogy of what happened to alot of trance. Don't get me wrong there were a fair share of quality tunes released in 2000 and 2001 but they just dont compare to the few years before them.
Only recentlly has the trance scene started to get back to its roots. 2002 has been good. I'd say 2000 and 2001 were probably the worst in terms of overall suckage to overall quality ratio. Whats sad is alot of "TAs" were started on allot of that crap.
any year B.C.
why, you ask, are those years bad for trance? well...cos there wasn't any!
I'd have to say the ass-end of 2000 and the first half of 2001, save the obvious exceptions

id say 2000 was crap except for a few awsome tracks! maybe we all thought it was crap cos of expectations from 99! IMO i thought trance went commercial for a while ie 2000 but i think its now back to the form it was on in 99! i hope we can look forward to alot more quality production cos personally i have enjoyed most of the releases this year, especially with all the new talent breaking through with new ideas and new sounds, things will hopefully stay this way!
it's not something that can be easily measured...to say one year was better for trance than another is like comparing apples to oranges.
every year has tunes that touches your soul, and songs that absolutely suck. and don't forget the ever changing scene. you have the rise in number of dj's and producers, and what trance was back in 1999, might not be what trance is in a couple of years. my 2 cents.
every year before umm.......96
This year, for me personally, is a progressive year
*listens to MMII*
for me, 2002 sucks for trance but awesome for other genres of music.
I havent heard a whole lotta trance tunes this year that got me going all that much.

I find at the moment there is a massive amount of crap vocal trance being released. The amount of good tunes to crap tunes has dropped from around 1:10 to around 1:20. But the tunes that are good are VERY good. Some absolute gems this year.
Funny how people always say trance is on the rise when the commercial trance pop garbage is riding high in the charts, it was the same in the "golden era" of 98-99.
For me late 2000 early 2001 sucked severly!
98 was alright
99 was amazing
2000 was alright
2001 was a bit crap
2002 so far has been really good, although there is a bit of a drought atm
2001 sucked?????
LOL, that's the funniest thing ive heard in a while.
some tune from that bad year...

thank you for pointing that out tranceseeker

I only began listening to trance in the middle of 01 so I cant really say, however I do think that ranking the best/worst years is rather unimportant as well as unrealistic. I mean the tunes come out, thats whats important, whe it came out isn't. Besides everyone has different tastes, you can't set any hard standards for mesuring them against each other :d

| No doubt that ATB's tunes were overplayed. However, I believed that he wanted to churn out something genuine with his equipment. Money or not, that's besides the question. We all luv the "greens". |
Tranceseeker: Taub? is from 1999. And (coincidentally?) also the only track apart from Peran & Yves Deruyter that I've still got in my collection. The rest of the tracks just sort of fell through, and are IMO no match to stuff like
Picotto "Lizard" & "Pulsar" & "Imperiale",
Push "Universal Nation",
AIDA "Far & Away",
Kay Cee "Escape",
Ayla "Ayla Part II" & "Liebe",
Cyrus & The Joker "Milky Way",
Binary Finary "1998 (PVD Remix)",
Planet Fuse "Devotion" & "The Real Face",
DJ Wag "Man on the Moon",
Storm "Storm",
The Gate "Iron Eden",
Mellow Trax "Phuture Vibes",
VDM "Night Express 2000",
Gouryella "Gouryella",
DJ Jurgen "Better off Alone",
ATB "9PM",
Jonah "Sssst...(Listen)",
Rising Star "Touch Me",
Airwave "Above The Sky",
Tandu "Velvet",
Tillmann Uhrmacher & Peter Vries "Bassfly"
which were all 1998/99, I think.
To me, melodic trance have been going down the drain steadily since that period, with fewer good tracks being released each year, almost no original tracks and only one or two tracks a year with the potential to become classics.
This year, however, have seen a upturn in the number of good tracks released ("Southern Sun", "Solarcoaster", "God Music" and some of Riva's remixes) although they still seem rather formulaic and fail to stand up to giants such as "Caf del Mar" IMO.
