Adam Solomon - Monochromatic [Ambient, IDM, Dub Techno, Berghain etc...]

Still needs a track listing and nice cover art but I'm quite eager to read people's reactions so I thought I'd go ahead and post it. Used two MK5's, a Xone 62 and a Kontrol X1 for this which I have access to for the summer (and hopefully my own from then on).

It's pretty much ambient/IDM for the first 20 minutes and I will be honest it might be a little patience-testing for some. The idea is that it builds up and ultimately pays off. Very steady progression in this one with BPMs ranging across the board.

I've been wanting to record something like this for quite a while now but never quite got around to it. Finally with the access to the equipment and a sizable collection of tracks I felt that I was ready.

I'll also mention that it was sweltering hot in the room when I recorded this, with no A/C and a thunderstorm outside, which forced me to shut the window. It actually felt like the music was very suitable to that, so I guess I feel it kinda has a sultry, steamy vibe.

So I hope you enjoy. And please do share your thoughts when you're done. If you're bothered to haha I know I'm not always.

this mix provokes a scenario in my mind where I'm entering some realm full of scary species with no humans around. this is mindboggling - it's truly intelligent music.

i'll try dude...like i told you, past 1 hour is hard to devote to....but if you are learning to play records i'm all for it.

Ive listened to this 3 or 4 times by now, i must say its miles ahead of any of the dub mixes i made. In fact its so much.better that when i tried to listen to mine again i just had to give up after half an hour.

I specially liked the first hour and a half(it gets a bit flat in the end), and i did miss one or two crazier tunes, or perhaps a more drastic change somewhere during the mix. Great stuff never the less.

About the mixing there isnt much to be said, technically its solid, but it gets kinda obvious that your a prog dj with those really long and smooth transitions. Techno usually works better with faster changes in pace(imho).

Criticism apart i really like this one, and ill probably listen to it dusins of times! Great work Adam, well worth the (4 month) wait!

Thanks mister! Don't feel so bad, you spin really good music too. Just try to plan ahead while you're mixing.

you did what i've been wanting to do for a long time. the combination of ambient and techno was goddamn seemless and excellent. in fact, the first 50minutes have been buzzing around my head for a while now. mixing is flipping flawless, as is track selection.

but, there is a criticism: after around 50min the mix went very steady, lost the atmospheric vibe & direction and continued that way until the end. it felt kind of like this: slow and steady come up, euphoria for a while, then comedown and flattening.

uhh... now that i read it over the review reads harsh. but count it as two reviews of two sections: the first, perfect; the second, good in an afterhours kinda way, but not really belonging with the first.

The beginning is really really good, i just have ADD. I got about halfway through on my drive today, and towards the 45 minute mark i got interested. Will do the rest demain estie .

definitely did not get 'sultry' from this. but definitely monochromatic.

maybe steamy at the beginning with the hissy ambient techno tracks.

have to agree with a previous poster about the flatline though - it just plodded and didn't really seem to go anywhere. at some point in there around the 100 min mark it sounded like warmup music all over again. even these super druggy trancey german deejays like marcel dettmann go somewhere with their sets. and they usually play a range of styles too. cold, electronic ambient and ambient techno are really not very different stylistically, and i didn't hear any IDM in here.

i guess i expected it because of the title, but I think even when you have something that is 'monochromatic', it can have textural changes, especially in the mixing. some surprises would be nice. the way you mix you can hear everything coming from a mile away. this is like techno soup. cream of techno. lee porridge.

Heh yea I can see why you thought that. The vibe does take a turn with the Markus Suckut track. It's what I was going for, but perhaps in the future I'll dedicate more time to developing the idea I had going with the first 50 minutes or so.

Can't please em all I guess. I'll admit there isn't much IDM, I probably got that from the Andy Stott track, if that even counts. As for the use of the word sultry, well that was probably a misuse of the word. Remnants from when English was not my first language I guess.

Still, I'm surprised that you took a listen but I appreciate the fact that you did. Obviously I'm not as experienced as you when it comes to this and might not be able to live up to your personal standards. I never really made this kind of mix before, it was an idea I've been toying with with a long time now and it finally came together in the form of this. I'm pretty happy with the result but obviously I can always do better. Also, I probably covered more ground in 2 hours than a set of this sort really should.

The only part I really regret is with the Milton Bradley remix. It's actually very short and I was gonna bring in another track early on, but I was having trouble with it so had to put the Bradley remix on loop while figuring out the next track. In truth I probably should not have played it at all because it didn't really work.

But yea, thanks again. I'll probably do somewhat better next time if there is one.

I loved the first section of this; really clinical stuff. The transition into beats was expertly done, too. The mixing in this part is some of the best I've yet heard from you too; very seamless.

From there, I think you held my attention up until just after an hour. What was the track at 42 minutes in? I liked it a lot. Perhaps it's just my general disdain for super-bleak Dettman/Klock/Tommy Four Seven-style productions, but I just found the middle portion very mundane. According to many, Marcelus is supposed to make amazing tunes, too, and yet I find his stuff just as uninspiring as the rest.

I think that to a certain degree, this set suffers from the same thing your recent prog one did. You obviously spend a lot of time digging for tunes, and you find a lot of middle of the road stuff. Stuff which, on it's own, definitely stands up as good music, but when chained together in a long set like this, fades into the woodwork and sounds the same as everything either side of it. This may just be my dislike for the aforementioned style of techno though. Essentially though, I feel like you're trying to pack too many tunes into your sets, going for quantity over quality.

It picked up a bit in the last 25 minutes, particularly with the cool dubby track around the 100 minute mark. Still, in comparison to the first 20 (or even 60) minutes, it was a bit of a disappointing end.

Have you had the balls to post this for the elitists on RA?
