That Jason Porter set which couldn't have been made in 1994. . . .

Anyone come up with a tracklist yet? I've always wanted to know what the first four tracks are.

At this point, the smart money is that Jason Porter is a hoax. Only one guy on the Internet seems to have any information on him, and he tells magical stories of some amazing but unknown DJ who wouldn't let any promoters put his name on flyers, but would apparently play on both side of the Atlantic and release promos with his name on them, and also apparently produce loads of his own tracks that were never released.

The likelihood is that some amateur producer made a bunch of tracks that would sound really good by early-90s standards but didn't have the production quality or sound to get a release on any modern trance label. So to generate hype around his material, this guy invented the story of Jason Porter to intrigue the kind of classic trance fan who would appreciate the material. That guy is probably the same person who started all these Jason Porter threads on TA.

So, in other words: I think the tracks you're after are unreleased amateur productions, and will never come to light.

was that ecksemmess? lol

BTW, having seen him several dozen times, I can assure you there was absolutely no Jesus posing.... or any other kind of posing. Very shy DJ.

A lot of Googling has failed to bring up any mention of anyone having seen him recently. So there are either two possibilities: either he's still doing the "never announce my name or put it on flyers" thing, leaving partygoers wondering who the fuck they just saw, or, he's retired or semi-retired despite having put out that 2007 promo set. Something tells me it's the former.

I'm glad he took that route. He's so damned good that if he allowed it, he would have been rather famous in no time, and that would have robbed the experiences hearing him play of what made them special: the intimacy, the fact that it was always at some random venue in the middle of nowhere, the fact that no one had any idea who was playing or what any of the music was, except that it was beautiful. There's no way to get quite that kind of experience seeing any big name DJ, no matter how good they are.

If he's american, then perhaps Steve Porter might know something about him.

Can someone shed some light on this? Never heard of this guy before (on TA).

Sure thing.
Same with Prof.anity, Bradvanity, Cat-astrophy, Bat-wannabee and Fatmanatee. Amirite?

good day mate. I'm glad your sarcasm detector was working.

You have to appreciate the music. Underground means can't.be seen. For not so obvious reasons the guy chooses to remain anonymous. Speculate and reason all you want.
Could be an old Moby set for all you know.
OP atleast make a download link

I did a bit of detective work and the guy who is the source of all Jason Porter knowledge (ecksemmess) had a few threads in the production forum around 2005 where he promoted his old-school trance inspired productions with lots of videogame music influence. Sound familiar? In the first Jason Porter thread netroM links, the 1994 Trelllis set has a FFVI remix on it, even though the game was only released in Japan at that time. ecksemmess mentions he heard Porter play this same track live that same year. This is the same set that contains an anachronistic sample from Heroes (2006) as well, remember.

Other incriminating details: he claims to have seen Porter dozens of times in the '90s, which is no mean feat if there was no way of telling when the guy was playing, and yet when he started the first Jason Porter thread he'd apparently almost totally forgotten about this DJ he'd seen dozens of times across the '90s, who apparently "changed his life". He finds a Jason Porter CD for sale on eBay but doesn't bother to contact the seller finding out information on where it came from, instead posting it on TA and asking everyone here instead.

Draw your own conclusions. You can find ecksemmess' old productions by searching his post history through his profile on the threads netroM linked.

Do you think he may have ran out of ideas and thus stopped posting new sets?

You could've linked the thread. I wouldn't recommend anyone to click on the link in his first post tho, the domain expired and it's now full of trojans and other ickies. Subsequently, there's no file to be downloaded anymore

The name of the ...piece? is 'Trial of the Mind', made by Justin Silverstein (ecksemmess).
KilldaDJ might have it.

So basically this dude made sets with his own tracks under a false guise?

Where are the tracks?

I have no doubt in my mind that he's a real person. He may be obscure on the internet - so what? This was back in the 90's when he was doing his thing, and he chooses to remain private since then.

What, I'm downloading them right now.. Will confirm if it has that Jason Porter sound to it.

Posted by Vernon Wanderer on Dec-09-2012 19:42:

The mp3 is safe and working.

After checking it out I am absolutely sure that Jason Porter really is ecksemmess' alias. The drums, strings, instruments, bass, sound quality and character, melodies and structure are all identical to JP.

I hope ecksemmess comes to his mind and admits it now, because I really love this, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I hope he continues to produce things, he makes really interesting tracks.

Posted by Mattsanity. on Dec-09-2012 19:51:

is this real life?

Posted by KilldaDJ on Dec-09-2012 20:06:

i did have trial of the mind somewhere...if i find it, i will upload.

hopefully we can debunk this JP myth shit.

incidentally, i did do a remix on the outtro. many many moons ago.

lol its still there

Quite possibly. I couldn't begin to second guess the actions of someone who would invent a DJ to promote their own material, though. If you read back through those old threads you'll see that people were doubting these stories years ago, and no surprise. The facts don't stack up, the samples don't fit the supposed dates and to me the sound is nothing like any trance from the early '90s I've ever heard. This info I've found from digging a bit deeper just seals it for me.
