Changing the pitch of samples

Hi there,

Sorry if sounds n00b but what is the correct way to pitch samples to the key of the track? Just changing the notes to the key?

Sample is a broad term.

Anyway, what you're looking for is pitch-shifting.

Melodyn and Battery are two plugs that will allow this in very different ways but to be honest, nearly all DAWs have this built in somewhere as a function.

For prec/drum hits, you can't go wrong with battery or ultrabeat, for Vox then melodyn is probably the most advanced but even logic has a lot of built in pitch shifting tools now directly focused on vox.

It really depends what you're trying to do.

If your talking in a basic sampler, just have a piano or something next to that track, playing C, and adjust the tune/pitch of the sample till it matches, then play it in the key you were working in.

I tend to do a little transposition on my drums to help them sit better/get them in key w/the track.

Aim for the Root, 5th, or 4th of the key of the song. If I have to transpose a sample more than a couple of semitones, then I start looking for a new sample. I'm not in the habit of pitch shifting one shot drum samples. I never liked the results I got, or at least finding a more appropriate sample always worked better. I will admit the last time I pitch shifted a drum sample was a good 13-14 years ago. Maybe algorithms have improved since then... ;p

All I know is RANN says (use another kick). I usually pitch pend hats so they sit well in the mix but idk about drums
