mcprog era, what would you say is the best tune?
I have devolved to making a mattsanity thread, armada/anjuna seem to have the best mcprog releases
this is my pick, dont think I've heard better since.
this....easily
perhaps not the best, but i don't mind licking an overly large lollipop in my lederhosen listening to this
I've always liked the slightly "darker-sounding" slice of this style, and even though the twinkle arps with lots of delay, low-passed Reese bass, the chopped vocal stabs eeh eeh eeh, aah aah aah, are used in way too many tracks, I like it all. Just not the actual vocals. They were surprisingly popular around that time it seems.
Yilmaz Altanhan - Eighties
One of the best, at least:
Perry O'Neil had my two favourites. Wave Force and the ATRC remix, albeit the instrumental

These 2 tracks from DK recordings still slap in my opinion:
Matthew Dekay vs Proluctors - BAD
Derek Howell - Yah Yah
Perry O'Neil - Numb (Original Mix)
Hammer and Bennett - The Beauty And The Beast (Original Mix)
This sound appeared around 2004-2006 with Markus Schulz supporting it in his weekly Global DJ Broadcast radio shows.
Mark Otten - Tranquility (Markus Schulz Coldharbour Mix)

Is there really any debate? Surely the official, TA-anointed best McProg track ever is the PQM Vs Chable mix of You Are Sleeping?
The stuff I like from this period is generally the Holden or Chable adjacent stuff from just before the likes of Andy Moor and Markus Schulz got their grubby hands on prog and surgically removed any last remaining trace of testicles from the genre. I Have Put Out The Light, or Quest - The Shepherd. Are they McProg, exactly? Maybe not, but those are the ones I enjoy.
Holden's energy control alone in I Have Put Out The Light actually places the track relatively far from what I consider to be typical McProg. Sure there are similar elements, but the final release of tension with a full bassline is so much more satisfying than in a lot of McProg, e.g. External Key. Despite West and Can having tried much more than Holden, I've always felt like the track falls flat on its face just when it's supposed to have the most energy. There's this grand breakdown and a big second build-up to almost nothing more, although there usually is more stuff going on in the climax than in I Have Put Out The Light. I feel the same applies to a lot of, if not most, McProg. The Alex Stealthy remix I posted doesn't insist on its climax as much and I think it works much better than most McProg, but it too has an obvious energy problem.
The term seems to be used very loosely, and people of course concentrate on different things in music, but surely Nothing (93 Returning Mix) is McProg (of the Schulz variety)? It has so many of the "genre's" defining characteristics in it. Even the sporadic claps/snares with massive side-chained reverb. It would fit very well on Miami '05 or Ibiza '06, no doubt.
Also, apart from the Chable-typical swingy drumwork, You Are Sleeping is quite boring (at least for home-listening)!
In my mind Luke Chable & early James Holden might be called proto-McProg as in they came before and paved the way for McProg but I dont feel they are McProg. I first heard the term McProg around 2005ish when it was (a bit derogatively) used to describe the (sometimes) formulaic melodic progressive sound released by Armadas sublabels.
I guess it boils down to personal memories and how one associates genre names with actual music. Ishkur seems to agree with You guys by stating that Twinkle Prog emerged somewhere around 1999 and is the same as McProg. I dont know, for me it still feels a bit wrong
But anyway, regardless of how to call it, there are some excellent tunes in this thread.

to complete the escapade, i'd like to also share this tune, its pretty low-key.
with the right system, the subbass reesey bass shines. you'd maybe like this if your taste crosses over with cheesey drum and bass.
also godbless the youtube algorithitim.

Anything from David West during this time period. He was ahead of his time in terms of the creative sounds he pumped out.
Never get tired of this one:
