Hello! Friday 2026 Thread

Happy New Year c0r wh0res!

What will 2026 have in store for us?

I know what it'll have in store for me, fighting off AI and bots and DoS attacks. Last month was the worst one for nonsense to date...

Swim classes and Chucky Cheese (pizza restaurant for kids) this weekend. Thankfully the swim classes are indoor and pool is heated. Good opportunity our 4 year old ready for Spring/Summer swimming.

Also trying to do a dry January. Did wayyyy too much drinking the past few months. Mostly holding back to lose some weight.

Same same. Doing a mostly dry January and February. I have a ski trip at the end of the month and I WILL be drinking champagne in the hot tub.

Flying to the Canary Islands for two weeks on Monday, to enjoy some winter sunshine. The forecast for next week is big fat sun symbols as far as the eye can see.

Needless to say, I won't be doing dry January. I haven't had a single drink this week though. It's relatively rare that I have a full week without at least one unit of alcohol involved.

Yeah, drinking has really become habitual for me since the pandemic. I've cut back over the last year, but it's still been rare to go without a couple drinks once or twice a week.

I just love craft beer so much! And imbibing goes with everything lol.

Come to think of it, I guess I should drink more, heh. I seldom do...

My heart skipped a beat at the thought I might be a bit too addicted to TA, but turns out I'm in Seoul this time around so I cannot take responsibility for what my fellow countrymen are up to

As for my Fridays, I tried to make the most of the winter here in Korea by snowboarding and ice skating for hours last week. Then I went to see two of my favourite local DJs. Now the blisters have burst, the adrenaline has dissipated, and the painful reminder that I've been spinning around on this cold hard rock for more than forty years has made me realise that I should have worn an extra pair of socks. Either way, I had the time of my life, and now I'm walking around campus like Robocop

How much of a British thing is it to drink at the airport, regardless of what time of day it is? Our flight is at 7am, and I guarantee there'll be people at the airport bar getting trashed even at that hour.

I personally try to avoid it for longer flights because I don't want to be up and down the gangway pissing for the whole journey, but it is definitely a temptation.

Personally, I don't think I've ever seen anyone drinking that much at an airport, with the exception of the occasional VIP lounge patron. Isn't it too expensive?

But then, I've only once had a beer because it came with the chips I had ordered, so maybe my sample distribution is probably heavily skewed.

Airport drinks are my favourite drinks!

A couple years ago I went to the Montreal Grand Prix (Formula 1) and was sat next to a dude at the airport bar who was also going for race weekend. We chatted about our kids + family, parenting, etc. He thought he was on the same flight as me, but wasn't, and ended up missing his boarding time, and had to get on standby for the next available flight. Whoops.

I mean, it's an airport, everything is overpriced! I usually just arrive, drop my bags, and avoid spending money as much as possible until boarding time

Come to think of it, though, it might be a regional difference. When I had the beer in Chile, I thought it was funny that they had the beer tap alongside the chips (as in fries, not Ruffles), especially since the friend who was there with me spotted it first and we were starving. As a matter of fact, I was genuinely shocked when flying Lufthansa on my way here that I could have alcoholic beverages with my meal. I don't think that was ever an option in Brazil, I don't recall seeing anything remotely ethylic on the food cart when flying through the Middle East, and I had wine this time on my flight simply because I was stunned that it was even an option... and because that's as far as my German got me

Yes it's expensive, but the business model of airports is to get you there far too early and then surround you with expensive consumer choices while you sit bored, waiting to board. The whole reason it's so expensive is because you're a captive audience.

The general psychology behind airport drinking is you're demob happy. You've got through the stress of security and baggage check and your holiday is about to start. Why not have a celebratory drink? How long to the flight - another hour? Get another round in, Marcus.

I definitely go intentionally early to drink lol. I have Nexus/Global Entry so there's no reason for me to be at the airport early except to hit the bar and talk to strangers.

Also +1 lol

Always enjoyed drinking at airports when traveling alone back in the day. Met interesting people along the way, some who are still friends. I usually can't sleep on planes, so I've gotten absolutely hammered more than a few times before long-haul flights to crash into my seat and pass out before takeoff. It's the best when you wake up to the captain announcing they're preparing for landing lol.

Have toned it down a bit since those days. But I love that my wife enjoys it, too, which makes traveling together even more fun. Definitely most comforting at the airports in the UK. Certainly feel amongst friends when it's 7 in the morning and half the people in the Wetherspoons has a pint or prosecco. There's a pub-like comradery in those moments that I don't think I've felt anywhere else.

Jason Momoa posted up right next to us at the airport bar on our way out of Toronto to NYC once, would have been when he was filming Aquaman. We only exchanged smiles and eye contact, nothing more. I'm not particaularly a fan, but I wonder what I would have done or said if it was an actor or musician I really love?

This is apropos of absolutely nothing, but does anyone remember that ancient meme of the weird shirtless guy with long hair flexing in a living room where the walls and carpet appeared to have the same lining? I feel like it's the kind of weird shit Hal used to post, and lord knows Google is baffled when I ask it.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-13-2026 18:51:

No, it wasn't William. I remember his deranged nude flex photo you're thinking of. This was something else. In my memory, it was a kind of "scenic depiction of Eastern European life". Like, a grainy old photo. The wallpaper and carpet were a garish red. It was the kind of bizarre image the C0R used to specialise in.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-13-2026 19:22:

Hm, doesn't ring a bell. But now I'm gonna have to see if William's Youtube channel is still kicking, lulz.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-13-2026 20:06:

Found him. The prompt I was half remembering was "Russian dating profiles".

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-13-2026 20:47:

Lol wow. I definitely would not have remembered that without seeing it.
