Smiley DJ Review: Mark Oliver w/ Astral Projection

I got there around 11:30. Music was pumpin! Some crazy acid techno and house and the dance floor was just starting to fill in. I couldnt even go and put my jacket away because the music was so good. I was pretty much the only one on the dancefloor, still in my jacket, just jammin to the amazing music. It was hard, dark, funky and bouncy all at the same time! Mark's opening set was incredible.

Finally i put my jacket away after an hour and at 1:30 Astral Projection came on. WOW, for me it was a snoozefest. Each song after the other sounding like more of the same. It was so fast and similar that i pretty much renamed their version of psy-trance as "minimal loudness". They completely ruined the vibe for me and by 2:30 i was out the door. (i was exhausted from christmas anyways)

It was nice to meet spam and see cuzo as well as shaya. Nick was there too. Everyone was in good spirits.

Apparently after I left Mark played a good solid hour of pure crazy techno after Astral Projection had slipped in some cheesy cd after 3 minutes of dead air. (apparently their set was done????) hmmmmm i guess their show wasnt so improvised after all eh?

I got there at about 11:45ish.

Mark Oliver's opener was too good! Me and my buddy were just bouncing around in the bar area with those insane acid lines & 303s. This guy is awesome all-around with different sounds.

I thought AP was decent, esp compared to when they were in Kool Haus for US5. Example: There were no signs of hard liquor drinking on stage (was that actually WATER they were drinking??). It also did seem like they were doing something with thier instruments. Anyway I liked thier psy-style and had some crazy moments during thier set.

Around 2:30 my best friend went missing, another practically passed out, and the third one took my passed out friend to my car to rest - while I searched Guv for 2.5 hours straight. While I couldn't really enjoy Mark's set surfing through the crowds, I did get to hear some of Marks closing set - definitely banging techno like Jayx1 mentioned - then went into some great house tunes such as Rachel Starr -- Till There Was You (Gabriel & Dresden 12 Step Remix) and Starkid - Crayons (Leema & Moor remix).

At 5:30 I left b/c I still couldnt find my friend and drove home to Mississauga without him. Turns out he got kicked out and likely cabbed home.

Anyway it was still a decent night for me. BTW it was nice to see at least 1 TA I knew - Mr Cuzo who dances everywhere!

We need a secret TA hand gesture so that we can find out who's a TA without walking up and asking people :P

I was first in line at the Guv entrance and spent about an hour chillin in the acid lounge talking to people, I couldn't stand the "Pump it up", "Lola's theme" and other z103.5 songs being played when I walked in, but eventually MO came on and saved us from that...

Mark opened with an amazing set set that ended with some sweet acid techno. I still need that song IDd

AP came on and initialy I was pumped, it was hard, fast, and trancy... everything I ask for in Goa, but a few tracks into their set it all started to sound the same and I ended up wandering around. Then I guess their set was finished, because we got dead air for a few minutes until "Pump it up" came back on (WHY!?). But then MO came back on and started with the good music again.

I left around 5am, got ripped off by the hot dog/sausage vendor who told me I only gave him 2.75 when I gave him 4 bucks, after a few minutes of arguing I finally got a hot dog. That stupid fuck, I hate that guy, why can't he be cool like the guy outside System?

Overall the night gets a 7, it was awesome to meet JayX1 and Shaya and see to Cuzo again. Mark O gets a 9

Yah so what happened was they "decided to stop playing"...

In other words the pre-recorded cd set ran out...

Mark had to SPRINT back up to the booth from the offices when the call went out that AP was done and there was dead air...

You know what???...I was on the stage getting some shots and I'd watch these guys...

I think that 2 keys they hit on the keyboard actually went out through the speakers...

These psuedo DJ's (or whatever the proper term) need to stop doing live show's on a real DJ night...

They're shit...And I for one am tired of them...

The only live PA that I've seen and enjoyed was Green Velvet...That was fun...

Other than that...MO kicked ass...as always...

Errrr... Infected Mushroom, Uberzone, Hybrid, Way Out West? Almost any live PA is better than a DJ set because DJs today are just glorified juke boxes (except maybe for techno DJs).

Obviously it's an exception if the Live PA is prerecorded though. That's pretty stupid, glad I didn't go. They've got good productions but if they're going to go up there and fake it then they're really no better than the average POP artist.

not imo

too me it seems like they always try too hard or something, even the songs i like dont sound proper or even good for that matter when done live, usually theres a bit of distortion (probley because of complications with all the equipment vs club setup) and how could anything be done better live??? you have all the time in the world in a studio to get it right rather than on the spot.
