Review: Josh Wink @ Footwork
Like I briefly mentioned in the Roll Call thread, this was a pretty damned good party.
I was itching to leave my house and make it out as early as possible, but Jenners and I ended up making it in at 11. Same friendly staff and service; nothing out of the ordinary. They added laZerZ? I don't remember seeing these before...they had some greens, reds, and even a trippy snake light that was constantly dancing on the wall . I was worried it would kill the overall atmosphere for me, because one of the things I adore about Footwork is the dark and intimate environment. Thankfully this wasn't the case; whoever took control of the lights kept it at a minimum, and never went over the top with the light shows. The place went dark when it was suitable. The crowd brought an excellent vibe with plenty of System Soundbar regulars. They forgot to bring their energy though, because the crowd was pretty dead for most of the early night. It was up to Jenners, George, a few TAs who made it, and I to rock it out and bring the dancefloor to life. I was wondering if everyone was sober...but after the thought it seemed as if everyone's pills had finally kicked in, as they finally started to get grooving and keeping up with the pace. hah. I was thankful for having plenty of room to dance too. No sketchy incidents or funny stories this time around. Jenners and I barely made it to the end (not because we were tired...) but it came quickly at 5 am.
Musically, this night was great. As soon as I saw Lee Osborne, wearing a 99 Sudbury shirt and all...I thought...this is going to be good. Lee, once again, dropped a stellar set at Footwork. I would love to hear him play a headlining set at Footwork some time, because his stuff is too good for an opener! Mixing was up to par, with a few great transitions. He played a bit of progressive, but focused mainly on the tech house, with some minimal mixed in there as well. It was expected but I must of said "OMG" about a dozen times during his set. He must of got a hold of my recent playlist of favourite tunes, because he kept dropping GREAT tracks that I loved. I could of sworn he was playing this set for me lol. I managed to hear all of it this time, but unfortunately did not have the chance to go nuts on the dancefloor due to catching up with friends and conversations earlier in the night. After I had heard a particular tune...I had to interrupt my friends, and convince them to run to the front of the dancefloor. There were many tunes that were the first time I had heard them live....and this one was the track of the night:
Shonky - Solar
I was speechless...but my feet were speaking. This track is the epitome of minimaliciouness! The spacey elements and constant soft beat are what stood out, and hearing these sounds live was an unearthly experience haha.
Another tune I had never heard live before was
Dave Robertson And Jon Gurd - The Rendition (Sebastien Leger's 'Good Clock' Remix)
Leger might as well rename this track to Sebastien Leger - Good Clock and add it to his Bad Clock ep since it sounds nothing like the original of The Rendition...but damn....what a track. Bad Clock is a yearly favourite of mine, and this is basically the same song with recycled elements and added soundsamples. I LOVE it!
Lee was definately up to date with fresh tunes. He also dropped the delicious tracks:
Quivver Feat Nikki Mack - Not Givin Up (D Nox & Beckers Remix)
Johannes Heil - Artology (Destillat Remix) <- Mine and Jenners song
There were a few others, but I can't remember. I hope this set was recorded!
I wasn't expecting to be blown away by Josh Wink, but I was impressed. He was very calm, friendly, and in touch with his set. His mixing was flawless, except for an incident with the equipment that caused a deathly 5 minute silence . He didn't really focus on a single style, but played a whole lot of everything. It all blended well together, but his set lacked flow. It could have been programmed more organized, and he had trouble keeping the crowd going for a good amount of time. One word to describe the set was deep. He started out with extremely deep and trippy house, progressing into slower progressive and minimal, changing it up to some acid and techno...but then quickly slowing it down again. There were some peak moments of greatness in which he played alot of upbeat tech, but for the most part it was just good. I enjoyed dancing more slowly and funky and then hopping my feet to the clicks and beeps that really got me going. The crowd loved the tunes too, which I thought was awesome. System crowds are the best Wink played a few of his productions, but the only song that stood out for me was
Joris Voorn - MPX 309
I was anticipating the moment when he'd drop Model8, since it would have fit in perfectly, but it was never heard. Ah well... Wink finished a bit over 4 am, which was around 2.5+ hours. His last track was his ripoff of Lil Louis - French Kiss called Josh Wink - How's Your Evening So Far? It was a dub...but a crappy way to end his set imo.
It was really hard to continue the vibe, after such an artistic set from Wink...and the last set pretty much killed it for me. I don't need to elaborate on this...
I'm glad I decided to attend this, and it was refreshing to NOT hear party tunes. I had a blast with Jenners, GrumpyClown...I mean George, and TAs Jason, Sally, Michael, and Neeta. Pffft to all you losers who bailed! You guys have no idea what you missed. Another good party brought to you by Footwork...next please!
