Fcuk, this is going to show my age...
Not in any particular order:
1, 1st Creamfields, UK 1998. Went with the GF and two friends. The line up was just fucking ridiculous; Sasha, Digweed, Daft Punk, BT, Paul Oakenfold, Dave Seaman, Carl Cox, Sven Vath, Green Velvet etc....It was actually a struggle trying to figure out who to see as the talent was just everywhere, and a lot of them were at their peak. Started at 2pm in the fucky house tent with Alastrair Whitehead, then an unknown DJ called sonique who absolutely destroyed it, then just went bonkers from there. Sasha was great, but Paul Oakenfold somehow just delivered. I remeber him playing Tilt Rendevous (pVD mix) and a ten with 15k people just going mental. Was so munted in the morning.
2, MoS vs Gatecrasher, 1998 Lotherton hall manor house, Leeds. Similar lineup to creamfields but in the most amazing setting. Went up on the tarin from London, got in a minicab to middle of nowhere and they couln't find it then we caught of glipse of searchlights hitting the sky and just headed towards them. Were in a massive line of cars, packed with ravers, all pumping out schranze and raving hard, limbs flailing out the windows. When we got there, the manor house was fucking huge, with massive tents on the estate grounds. You entered through a long privet arch in to this incredible stately grounds with a giant full on fairground.
We wandered in to the first tent and Eric morillo was playing Music Sound better with you, and that really set the tone for an epic night. Caught 30 mins of him, then Roget Sanchez took to the decks who also killed it then after about an hour went for harder fare, but on the way, stumbled across the bumper cars and whitlizer. I remember just starting to feel it on the dodgems and had an insane game of cat and mouse with the guy that ran the bumper cars, and he made a point of coming over afterwards and shaking my hand for an epic duel. Can't remember what order but think we were dancing to someone like Judge Jules or OakenFold, I bumped in to a camera man I knew from london who happened to be doing a thing for MTV, and said this guy Paul van Dyk is starting to play in the next room. We walked in there only knowing a couple of his remixes at that point, just as he dropped his mix of binary finary. Fucking incredible.
The next few hours are a bit of a blur but as dawn was approaching we headed over to the hard house tent and caught the last festival set that Tony De Vit (RIP) ever played. His last tune I think was Never Lost his hardcore by NRG. So fitting. 6am it finished and me and the GF found ourselves walking alone through these impressive stately grounds in to a giant sprawling hedge maze. Was like something out of a dream sequence in a film, gives me goosebumps to remember it.
Took a bus with a load of wrecked ravers to the train station but the trains didn't run until 9am, we accidentally passed out on the benches and somehow woke up 2mins before the train left and jumped on it back to London.
3, Carl Cox, Drais afterhours, Vegas EDC weekend 2012. This as in the old drais, before it moved. We happened to be in Vegas for business, the same weekend EDC was on, but knew we'd sneak in one night somehow, but didn;t want to go to the speedway.
Me and the GF Met my LA clubbing buddy and GF in Vegas, found out Carl was playing the afterhours at Drais. Tickets were difficult to get as they were only released on the day, but snagged 4. Drai's opened at 12, but we thought we'd go for 1am. Get in about 1:30am as the door guy who had the master list of tix just didn't show up so everyone was waiting outside. Anyway, droid Behavior were warming up pretty damn solidly but wanted to Carl to come on then we found he's not playing until 5am
When he did take to the decks, it was one of the best performances I've ever seen from a DJ period. He was constantly working 3 or 4 decks, and the really intimate stetting at Drais, where the booth is level with the dance floor, and there's plenty of nooks for chilling made the experience that much better. The crowd was fucking fantastic too, I bumped in to a few peeps from LA but because all the ravers were at EDC, you just got the real music lovers and Cox fans. Around 4am we found out EDC got closed down due to the high winds and the ravers started to descend on Vegas. Drias were being strict about who they let in so it didn't ruin the vibe - smart move by the bouncers, and those that did get in were super happy and kept the energy levels going.
It just fucking bumped on, banger after banger until about 9am, I was losing steam; I'd been up for 25+ hours by that point and dancing for at least 9 of those hours. Cox was relentless and it started getting messy, people were still dancing on tables but around 9:30am, me the GF called it quites and left me LA buddy still going. When we walked out, there were still several hundred people in line waiting to get in. He apparently stayed another hour and it was still going strong.
Such a good night and even though I;ve seen cox 20 odd times since the mid 90's it truly solidified why he's such a fucking talent.
