Two NHL teams in Toronto?

Is there a thread for this already? This is old news to me but now there's a franchise value attached to the speculation. I think it's gonna happen but the NHL does not need expansion nor contraction, imo. It needs relocation: chop off Florida, Atlanta, Nashville, Phoenix.. and relocate to Toronto, Quebec City, Winnipeg and Kansas City (or Seattle).

Report: Second team in Toronto could be worth $600 million

Text SizeIf Southern Ontario is awarded a second NHL team it would be an extremely valuable commodity.

According to a report in the Globe and Mail, a second NHL team in Toronto could be worth up to $600 million and Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment would likely be entitled to a territorial payment of approximately $250 million if an existing team relocated.

The research for the report was done by sports finance expert Marc Ganis who is the president of SportsCorp Ltd. of Chicago. He stated that he believes that the second team in Toronto would instantly become the third most valuable team in the league behind the Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers.

"There is no better (hockey) market anywhere than the one for a second team in Toronto," Ganis told the Globe and Mail. "The reason is the strength of the Toronto market for hockey."

The value is added by a 3rd party, who is not involved in the deal. Yes more speculation, and not really worth it.

This is not going to happen anytime soon, so don't hold your breath. Just a way to sell more papers.

I don't think so. You already have two western conference LA (Ducks, Kings) teams and three eastern NY teams (Rangers, Devils, Islanders).

The Detroit Red Wings should really be in the east and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers should be in the West

Just more speculation on my part, but no more rooted in fact than the thought of another team. I've heard this before, for a long time, and it has not happened, probably for good reason.

Detroit manages fine...

But if you remember...Toronto use to be a Western Conference team as well.

another team in Southern Ontario is a good idea but I don't think a second team in Toronto will happen. People only have so much money to spend on entertainment and the Leafs will still be the number one choice for that entertainment dollar.

A team in Hamilton or KW is probably a better idea.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a team to come to any Canadian City until the NHL can get a TV contract in the US. Bettman has made it his goal to make the NHL work in the US...which it will never do.....hockey is not a national sport in the US...its a regional sport.

maybe the Leafs should go back.. they were more successful there during the Nikoli Borshevski years

Detroit needs to move back. Relocate Florida to Winnipeg, move them to the West and Detroit back to the East. Relocate Phoenix to
Toronto. Feel free to refute these ideas... but come up with some solutions too

what amuses me is that the author is talking about a second team in a city like a novelty, while New York has had 3 hockey teams for a while now.

I agree, it won't work in the US, but in this current economic climate, the NHL needs to lean up, imo. Moving to better gate-driven markets (ie Canada) may make more sense, faltering loonie notwithstanding. The NHL relies heavily on it's gates, moreso than the other major sports, rather than television revenue.

Don't be surprised if the Red Wings have to relocate....there is already talk that with the auto sector going to hell in a hand basket that Detroit may have to relocate because it'll no longer be economically possible for the team to operate there.

As long as Bettman is in charge I don't believe we will see another team in Canada.

The NHL needs to loose at least 4 teams....which again will never happen. The owners would have to buy out those four teams and even at a conservative number of $200 Million per team, you are looking at almost a Billion Dollars to buy them out.
