Its due to the 128 parameter limit in versions prior to live 8.

I think if you have the "OVR" button clicked at the top of the page this will overwrite your automation....

im struggling with automation i cant figure out how to draw a single automation dot

You know click on two points to draw a line of filter cutoff automation etc?

I have to draw a freehand line then delete all the wiggly bits.

When recording automation un-arm the channel (little red dot bottom of your channel strip) then try recording. Latest version of Live all you have to do is click on say the filter cut of knob in your VST & it should show up in the automation menu in Live.
