Well what DAW are you using. I use FL studio and the peak controller to sidechain my pads.
First I make a copy of one kick drum with a peak controller in the mixer. I set that peak controller to mute so the kick can sidechain even during break downs or whatever.
Then in the mixer rack for the pad I want to sidechain, I add a compressor. I set the threshold to 0 db then link that to the peak controller. Then I setup a compressor with the following stats: threshold 0, ratio 9.5:1, attack 15, release 200, type: Hard/R
Then I can adjust how hard it ducks by moving the volume of the peak amount. Usually I use around a -30 db peak for pads, but I will go like -15 db for bass usually. And for things like percs or leads I will sometimes turn down the ratio to like 4.0 or less to 1.
Sounds like this: http://soundcloud.com/astrobouncer/8-bar-sc-pad
