GENREF#CK 003 (ethereal, shoegaze, prog, kraut, psyche, dub, gothic, thunderstorm)

▲▼▲◼▲ - GENREF#CK 003

standing,
solitary,
storms
remind her why she arrived
below our sobbing boughs
gathered here in ghostly groves
ask her was it accident
or lonesome intent?
watch her whirl and weave:
her courtly dance our covenant.
private vow of pirouettes,
secret muscular susurrus
whose echos ever echo and echo
lingering far after light finally alleviates
the sinking deepness of her discontent

The third in my GENREF/CK series, this mix was originally conceived amongst the wind and rain of nyc's recent urban hurricane, along with my strong desire to get away and go for a long walk in the woods. there is nothing like a good thunderstorm to wash away your troubles. i hope you enjoy.

This was fantastic. I love these kind of mixes, never quite know where they're going to go. And finally after all the hype I think Forest Swords has clicked with me, Miarches was the tune of the set.

Really enjoyed this one, Avana. I liked the fact that there were some darker/ethereal tones which resonated well with me, and made for an enjoyable soundtrack to my morning at work. The underlying thunderstorm throughout the entire mix was a neat touch.

I wasn't watching the tracklist closely so I can't comment on which tunes stood out to me in particular, but I will probably be giving it another listen soon.

This is my favorite of the series thus far, hope to see more like it.

Thanks, yeah that one really stays with you after you listen. I believe a DJ mix can be a form of story telling which transmutes music into images, like a constantly evolving dream. and like a dream, i love that cascading quality where you drift down one cataract to another. one of my main intents in this 'genref#ck' series is to explore all of the corners of my musical and mental universe and bring those images to light.

Thank you To me it feels like a synthesis of all my previous mixes. With the thunderstorm I basically just played one of those nature relaxation cds in the background and set it up on an extra channel on my mixer such that I could kind of play it like crowd noise or ambience or something when I felt I wanted to invoke that sound or create a certain amount of depth or direct image.

I did kind of argue with myself a few times about whether or not to include this ambient noise... i imagine some listeners would say that it's too literal or heavy handed, that the music should abstractly convey the theme itself.

My decision to include it, though, was based on the actual numinous quality of the sound itself and not mere theme or symbolism. I tried to treat the thunderstorm as one of the records in the mix worth listening to. Thunderstorms have always been a wonderous combination of relaxation, fear, and catharsis for me, and I was trying to demonstrate in through the mix what a good thunderstorm means for me.

storms are exceptionally powerful to the psyche. as i said in the OP, i was inspired to do this after the hurricane that passed through NYC. it had an intense psychologically disruptive and disarming quality which affected the city for days beyond actually causing damage. it made the city feel strange, wonderful, and new. it changed people's routines, geographies, moods. the presence of novel psycho-geographical zones (evacuation zones, isolation from public transportation, dry land, high ground, high rises as potential weapons of destruction)... just so very rich with imagery.

but this mix was more about the experience of a storm in an isolated setting like a forest.

Yes, just replaced it with 320kbps. the 128 was a mistake.

So the soundcloud, mirror, and megaupload links are now the 320.

The mixcloud is going to stay 128 though.

Hey nefardec just wondering if you've heard many other mixes in the style of this and Eat Your Heart Out? Anything that has influenced these? I thought that the System J TA Classics game might have some mixes more along these lines but a lot of them are a bit too 'all over the place' for my liking. There's something quite cohesive about these sets that I really enjoy.

Though it's a bit more ambient, this is quite a left of centre mix that you might enjoy:

It's the set called "l'effet papillon."
