No, he never has been. People merely ascribed that label to him once Sandstorm blew through every radio station on the planet, despite it being a simple anthem trance track featuring an acid line. Darude never intended for Sandstorm to become what it did. Cheese is anything produced explicitly for radio play, explicitly for money, and explicitly without seriousness on the part of the 'producer.' Sandstorm is none of those. Therefore Sandstorm was never cheese. There is correlation between cheese and popularity, but no necessary connection. Sandstorm is one of the exceptions to the correlation.

Once he got exposure and put out other productions, the myth merely perpetuated itself and stuck like a parasite to his work. I wish people would stop repeating it as if it were some earmark of trance veteranship.

He sure is compared to other good trance producers (i.e Mr F Corsten, Paul V D, Etc...). Pop trance, I think more suited at a kids birthday bash

You haven't heard anything but the obvious tracks from him, have you?

Definitely not. Buy his 2 albums and you will see that there are cheese tracks, yes, but BARELY any. Just as many as any other trance producer these days it seems like. If you still think he's cheese, then I suggest you listen to these tracks from him:
- Serendipity
- Rush
- Passing By
- Ranta
- Obsession
- The Flow
- Burning
- Touch Me Feel Me

No, he never has been. I didn't like Sandstorm when I heard it first time but now all his song are pretty good.
