synth or VST questions

I am a total n00b when it comes to this stuff
are there any "essential" pieces of equipment that everyone seems to have?
Are there any VSTs or synths that a lot of producers are using at the moment?
Where do I begin?
If I want to start producing what would you reccomend? What are the best options?
