Access Virus. Is it worth it?

I've always been a software user. I know my DAW and my VSTi's and can get the sound I want from them. But one hardware synth has always been on my wishlist. The only synth I'd ever consider buying. The virus TI. Using a HW synth as a VSTi plugin while still being able to program in using real knobs sounds like a dream. I've also heard that it supports full automation, remembering presets.. But 1800 EURO is a lot of money. I'd have to pay for it for 2 years and it's a big step for me. The biggest hardware investment so far has been the e-mu 1212m and behringer bcf2000. So my question is: in todays world of hi quality VSTi's is it worth buying a hardware synth?
I'm sure some of you own a virus. How much do you use it these days? Also I've heard ppl tell me to go for a nord lead. is it really better any if it is, why?
One other thing.. I've got an e-mu 1212m (as mentioned) which has 1 stereo analog input and 5 digital inputs. Can the virus be connected using an optical cable? Because as far as I know it has 6 outs.
thx

P.S. I'm mostly into trance. From melodic to goa.

My virus has replaced every softsynth I've ever used.

Well worth the investment IMO if you're serious about production.

I got a virus ti, and this is how I use it. Depending what I wanna do, I have the usb connected to the computer and I run the virus control software, after finding or creating the sound I want, I press the direct monitoring function on the virus control software, and record it thru analog cables running to my converters. I also use the knobs on the synth when programing sound and stuff (not just the virus control interface). Sometimes I record it just like any other vsti. How much do I use it these days? Well all the time, It's the first synth I go to for ideas and sounds. Is it better than nord lead? I have a nord Lead 3, and it's great, but still virus offers you more.. If I had to keep only one synth out of the bunch I've got, Virus ti is the one that would stay.

Virus TI is the Formel 1 of synths.

I have to agree. I have used vsts since 2001. I got my Ti in Dec of last year. Ever since then. I havent touched a vst since besides the Ti's vst. This is my first piece of hardware and its just amazing.

im currently awaiting my fundage to get to the point when i can ditch my software synths and move onto the 'wall of sound'. i recon a virus is worth getting if you can afford one.

Yes I think it's worth it. I have C for a couple years and it was my first synth. Everyone on this board told me to start with something easier but eh i figured i'd be spending more money that way so i went and bought one of the best right away lol. Don't think I will ever regret it it's the one synth I go to for everything.

This is very well said. I hear people say all the time: "Get something easy, virus is so complex". Ya It might be but also virus comes with enormous sound libary online, free, and than you can buy soundsets, and than you can start making your own. It will keep you busy for years to come, unlike some of the easy synths that end up on ebay, in a short time, casue you just happen to outgrow their patch creation and sonic posibilities. Why buy twice or more when you can get it right the first time. Just get it, if you don't like it try other stuff, but I am sure eaven if you worked on the virus ti for a while and than got a nord lead 3 <-- just en example... you'll be going back to the ti in a short time.. Unless Nord is something you're after. I remember writing on this board a while ago about a friend of my, who had a Ti, and sold it to go all software. Let's just keep the long story short. He purchased the virus Ti again.
