The subwoofer suggestion / review thread

Hey gang... I did some searching but didn't find the exact discussion I'm looking for.

I currently mix on a pair of Tannoy System 800 monitors and I freaking love them to death. the only trouble is that they tend to fall off a bit early in the low frequency range. I'm having a hard time mixing bass sounds because I simply can't hear them all that well. I can put on some headphones to help.. but we know that's sacrilegious to mix with.
I'm willing to spend some $ on a really nice sub. I've heard and used shitty cheap home theatre subs for mixing before and have been severely disappointed. I'd love to have a very tight, responsive, and controllable low fq range.

Bottom Line: I'm looking to add a sub to my system, and would love some suggestions. Anyone use one that they totally love?

for now, my eye is on the Tannoy TS10. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TS10/
B&H Photo has it for $379

Thats awesome to hear. Thanks for replying. I'm trying to score a pass to NAMM to see if maybe I can keep my eyes open for other brands etc.

you will need a spectrum analyser if you are going to set up a subwoofer correctly for monitoring bass accurately.

its harder to integrate a subwoofer than the cheaper manufacturers make out. have a look at what the more expensive manufacturers provide with the subwoofers. a good package should include a variable active crossover which allows you to high pass your existing monitors and feed everything below to the sub. even then you need to be able to measure with an analyser and adjust phase and x-over frequency.

put your monitors against the wall. its the best solution for bass problems in an untreated acoustic space.

pick up the 'quested' 10 inch system with external amp/x-over. heard good things about this and it is good for fitting into a lot of near field powered monitor packages. it is only 200 watts rms but the amp in there is made by mc2 audio. the best amp company in the world.

the dbx driverack 260 is the powerpoint of my monitoring system design. maybe use your driverack(used as crossover) in conjunction with your monitors and a good amp by mc2 audio and home made bass reflex box (loaded with ciare 12.00SW? - a great speaker for the money!) you cant loose as long as you get a nice bass refelx plan or design your own by using a free reflex box designer. even the right sealed box with this 12.00sw unit will reap massive rewards.

REL (www.rel.net) makes some of the best/most musical subwoofers in the world. They may be relatively difficult to find, but are well worth the effort. If you can find a Strata III on the used market you will be in love, try www.audiogon.com.

Joey.. how funny that everytime i see you we're in a 120 decibel environment and can't talk shop.

You'd have to hear the tannoy's to really see what i'm getting at... they're kick ass monitors... they just don't go low enough on the spectrum to get it all worked out. :-(
