Most of the biggest pop hits have recycled the same four chord progression for decades now. Like L4C said, it's all about aesthetics now, how they're used within a song or their accompanying lyrics.

No, we will never. Technically, there is an unimaginable amount of possible melodies, harmonies and rhythms, but we tend hold ourselves to an extremely limited case of them. This video explains it perfectly:
