I was there earlier this week. I got a pre-paid Orange SIM card. 10 for the SIM, and I added20 to the account. 4 per week (7 days). 50 SMS for free. 50MB per week at 3G, unlimited MB at throttled. No clue how much a voice call costs.
Yes, you'll need your passport. Also, you'll need to make sure your SIM is registered with Orange to bypass the over-18 sites filter. The filter blocks way too many sites. |
great information! Was there anything special I needed to know to register the SIM card. Do you remember the name or location of the store where you purchased the SIM.

when i went last year i just used my Blackberry (VERIZON) there, i just called in to let them know i would be using it in spain. The rates for text messages isn't that bad at all, data is the same , phone calls are a bit pricey though.

No USA-based carriers allow unlimited data (except grandfathered AT&T plans, and not even all of those). And, then if you use one of those plans, voice is ~$1.49/m, and SMS is $0.25 to receive and $0.50 to send (I think): all which is outrageous.
I had the 20MB plan for emergencies in Italy and I used it within 3 days. Just opening the wall on Facebook sucks over 1MB.

(if you need me to translate, let me know).
Two things:
a. For registering the SIM, you'll need the store to call Customer Support (you can do so as well, but you'll need to get past all of the Spanish voice prompts yourself to get a person whom then you'll need to talk to in Spanish to get a English support person).
Just ask them to register your SIM as an "adult" or "over-18". They should be able to do it easily as they have your passport. Make sure you try the Internet in store.
I'm still seeing a couple of problems at the router level, but I'm working with my friends to see what can be done.
b. For topping-up, I was unable to use Orange.es (go figure). I used a third-party service. Google told me to use EZTop, but there are others, I'm sure.
The surcharge was 0.59.

Verizon actually has a $60 a month unlimited international plan but you have to be grandfathered in on it. My friend is living in Ibiza this summer and uses the heck out of that plan

apologizes in advance if these are noobish questions but last time i was on the island (09) we just went without a phone. would like to change that this time.
what are some options for those of us without unlocked phones? im with sprint so theres no sim card slot and the cdma network sprint runs on means its not compatible in spain. gaaaaaaaaaaay i know. but is there some cheap prepaid phone i could purchase on the island? all i care about is a bit of data. phone calls and texting wont be necessary. i guess if i could text a little that would cool but like i said not necessary. |
rent a phone or get a relatively cheap GSM smartphone that is already unlocked without a contract like this one.
