The WFH (Work From Home) thread

I've had the capability for a few years now, and I try to WFH at least once a week, if I can, under normal circumstances. We got the WFH order late Friday.

I know someone asked in the coronavirus thread about advice on working from home, so I wanted to share the guide Ars Technica put up recently in case anyone else might be interested, having suddenly found themselves with a WFH order.

I started a new job in November at a consulting firm that allows anyone to work from home whenever they want, as long as a you have work to do, because we have to charge our time to the clients we are working on. For me, I generally write down a schedule daily and cross off the items I get to, and move the unfinished items to the next day. Find a place in your house where you can work with minimal distraction and get to work. Take normal breaks (15 min, Lunch break) as you would at work and keep hydrated.

In theory, it's not such a break from the countless strikes we've had in my institution. However, I'd usually work at the nearest Dunkin' Donuts or McCaf, and now that isn't an option. I can't go to the gym either.

That's the weird bit.

I'm still going to work as I can't do a lot from home, but my wife can work from home, at least when she gets connection to the server.
Luckily in January I asked the company at work that does our server maintenance to install a remote desktop gateway. A colleague and our planner now used that to work from home instead of a vpn connection.
Most of the 110 people can't work from home as they work in the factory.
Also we upgraded our old Avaya phone system to a virtual 3CX VOIP system which makes it possible to use an app at your mobile phone so you can make and receive calls as if you're at the office.

Trance-M, youre in the zone that got hit the hardest, first.
Good luck.

Sounds like your company is on some very old specs when it comes to IT. We're not in IT ((bio-)chemical & oil-gas business), but working with a laptop at home is just as productive as in the office. One of the very few things you miss is the occasional colleague coming over to your desk, or the coffemachine talk.

Working with MSTeams now, which is very useful. Before we had similar solutions, but back then all from different brands; MS SfB (Skype for Business), WebEx for telcons, Sharepoint online, etc. With MSTeams this all comes together. MST also makes it possible to have a telcon with clients and our own project team, while everyone is at home. With VPN, I have full access on our servers, as if it were my own machine.

Waar als Roderick & Anne Fleur gingen hockeyen, Jack stoer verklaarde: Laat er house zijn en housemuziek werd geboren. Waar ongelovigen toch predikten God made me funky, and Im glad He blessed me this way.

There is something to be said about working at a place that has a freezer full of popsicles sans cash register.

Yeah, we still have our own Exchange server and stay out of the cloud for as long as possible. Our factory, as former Philips factory goes back till late 60's. A lot of the equipment is ancient but has proven to do what they were designed for. In theory our factory could run without a network.

Brabant probably got hit hardest, but we're very close behind.

Edit: by the way, we do use vpn connections for many years. The remote desktop gateway we now use next to it as it just makes it easier for non-laptop users. You can take over your pc at work with all drives, programs and links working.

I've been working remotely/from home for the past five years. I've always loved and appreciated it, but not as much as I do now.

My simple advice: Run, walk and/or dance at least 10,000 steps each day.

Exercising, eating right, yada yada yada. If you haven't been doing it already, you probably won't do it now. But just get those 10,000 steps or more.

For people stuck at home in isolation or lockdown, I bet it's a great way to feel better by achieving a daily goal (other than staying alive, of course).

I've been working from home since Monday and been told to do so till the end of next week. My personal preference is to be in the office because my software runs a lot fast when i'm in the office. I can do my job anywhere but I prefer to be in the office. I don't mind the occasional day working from home but after a while it does get stale.

I treat this whole working from home thing like i'm going to the office. I still wake up at a reasonable hour, shower, etc. and turn my computer on by 7:30am. I find myself working through lunch but shutting down by 4-4:30.

As an applications engineer, I miss my office set-up. I miss my 3 monitors and other tools. I do lighting design so I miss having my lighting software on 1 monitor, AutoCad/Navisworks on another and e-amil on the other.
