DJ Mag documentary - references to Trance

Don't think this has been discussed on TA yet, but the documentary was uploaded a few days ago.

It goes for 47 mins in total, and from 11 mins, there were numerous references to "Trance"

So it's a documentary about DJMag's 100 Best DJs Poll produced by DJMag, detailing how Very Important DJMag's 100 Best DJs Poll has been to DJMag, and DJing abroad.

Just to save us all the time, does it offer any reflective criticism, or is it a 100% pure self-congratulatory fluff piece?

/fails if it doesn't include footage of Guetta's first victory, with the sad, silent spooters on stage

I was pleasantly surpised that the documentary did have a bit of self-criticism. And it DOES show footage of people booing when Guetta won the first time! (at 24:05)

And he says "when you're in the top 5, you only get love. When you're number 1...it's more complicated".

Van Dyk said it was a great honour to win, but winning awards is not what motivates him.

The criticism about Dj Mag Top 100 simply being a popularity contest is also noted and acknowledged from 29:00 - they don't shy away from it. They also talk about how Top 100 isn't that diverse, nor does it represent the reality of the scene.

I know lots of people are busy, but if you just want to watch the bit about Trance music, it's from 11:00 mins to 20:00 mins.

Heh. Guetta's only crime then was winning it in front of a crowd of Armin fanboys who took the poll Very Seriously back then.

Good to see DJMag are aware enough of the poll's complicated legacy and all - I've no doubt some of the rag's editors have felt it more of an albatross they're stuck with due to financial reasons. Kill it tho', and they pretty much kill their entire operation. No music journalism is safe these days, as Pitchfork getting rolled into GQ proves.

It's unwatchable rubbish if it doesn't mention TA's Mikey Mike campaign.

An enjoyable watch if nothing groundbreaking.

Carl Cox comes across really well as does Digweed, Morales and Sister Bliss.
Garrix, Hardwell and Aoki are a huge contrast to the old guard.
