I've seen some cool productions off a shitbox computer, constructing the track, piece by piece, layer by layer... then resequencing in a proper studio where cpu whoring wouldn't be an issue

So you reckon its impossible to create a track of that calibur using sub-standard equipment? I was so hoping he actually 100% used the laptop

well fatboy slim still use an Amiga to arrange their tracks...yes an Amiga. They discuss it on their DVD where they're playing on the beach in Brighton (UK) to over 250000 people.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what you are using as long as it works for you and allows you to lay down what you're thinking. I think people get too caught up in what other people are using and not enough about what works for them.

nah its possible.. bear in mind that most of the fundamentals of a trance track lie in the melodies.. you could knock up some kick ass melodies on any machine .. laptop, whatever .. im talking about the more technical aspects to producing a track.. like you wouldnt really want to mix a track without decent monitors, in a closed room.. rather than sitting by the pool with a pair of shit house headphones on.. but by en large the 'crux' of his track was probably done as you say on his holiday

bear in mind i have no music producing aptitude whatsoever. bringing the cheese back to the masses!

You're right Chris, there is far too much focus on what 'other producers' use rather than focusing on learning to use what you have, effectively... There are heaps of posts in the Production Forum on TA regarding which "patch" uses... and when you sit back and read these posts the first thing that comes to mind is - 'Oh they must be new to it all ' Then you find out that these people asking these questions aren't nOObs at all - They have been writing tracks for years but are too concerned with emulating other peoples sounds.

I think its ok to do that when you first start out - but after a while much like DJing you want to find your own style.
