Yes from personal experience Dutch is difficult to learn. I moved here from Washington DC to central Holland in June to be with my dutch husband and sure am having a problem with the language. In 3 months of constant exposure to it, I can now pick up some words in conversation but speaking what I learn is difficult to me. Only advice I have is practice, practice and practice.

even Mandarin (chinese) is easier to learn than dutch..
besides the fact that pronounciation wrecks your tongue for a couple o' weeks, the grammar sucks really bigtime. odd verbs next to even odder nouns with some rules made in 1750 and other according to the "new spelling" aka. "the little green book" from a couple o' years ago.
even most of the natives have trouble with that... them/their (dutch: hen/hun) for instance is being used on a dunno bases, even in supposedly good literature.

but there's also good news. (non illegal) aliens who have lived here for twenty years don't speak dutch either. and they seem to do just fine...

being around dutch people and watching dutch soap opera's and news broadcasts surely helps a lot

Since my thread was closed, posting here:

Hi peeps, I will be traveling by train from Hamburg (DE) to Brussels, Belgium.

My problem: The train takes about 7 hrs and I don't want to waste so much time of my trip, so it makes sense to stop somewhere "in the middle" for a night and explore that place.

The issue: I've already been to Amsterdam, which is about halfway, and I do NOT want to visit it again.

So another option I can consider is Rotterdam. Is there a direct train from Hamburg to Rotterdam? How long does it take? Or, do I have to change trains in Amsterdam?

Or is it a good idea to just go straight to Brussels?

Any other suggestions you might have would be very appreciated.

as far as i know you'll have to change trains in amsterdam or perhaps you have a look if you'll have a good connection at amstersfoort.

but there are plenty of trains from a'dam cs (at least 5 trains/hour).
