fruity loops - where to start?

Hey all,

I just got the latest version of FL (version 7) and have been left absolutely paralyzed. My goal (currently it seems impossible but then again thats why I'm posting here) is to eventually produce some decent trance and hiphop music off of FL.

I have never used Fruity Loops, or any program like it, before. My only musical experience is from the pair of turntables I own.

Now, I've been screwing around with FL for a few weeks now but because of the mind boggling scope of effects/tools/options and sounds I've gotten absolutely nowhere.

My questions for everyone are as follows (specific information, such as links are appreciated)

1) What plan of attack should I take to start the massive task of effectively learning this program

2) What sample packs / resources should I look into downloading/buying

3) Any other general tips or advice you have for a true beginner of Fruity Loops

Thanks everyone!!

You are me one year ago.

Step 1: Bookmark this for reference - Master tutorial list Before you ask any question, MAKE SURE you try and find an answer there first! If not there, try Google or Wiki - the folks on this forum are awesome with helping out, but I'm sure they get tired of answering the same questions.

Step 2: Look for tons of VsTi plugins to play around with. In that link I gave you they have a nice list of plugins for you to check out, a lot of which are free. Plugins are separate software modules that can be hosted by Fruity Loops. They might be instruments or effects. Each has its own purpose. It's up to you to learn what that is! I haven't actually used Fruity Loops, so I don't know what kind of built-in synthesizers, etc. there are. In any case, explore what you have!!

Step 3: TAKE THINGS ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME! If you find yourself getting too overwhelmed, take a step back, and try again more slowly. It's easy to get intimidated by how much people know, and how much there is to know about producting. I still don't know much, but I promise you I know MUCH more than I did last year!!

Good luck, and stay persistent!

Buy some quality sample cd's and dont use the sample's that come with Fruity.

Read the manual that comes wih Fruity studio as it tells you how to use it.

If you get stuck then post a question or go to www.serious-sounds.net as they have Fruity flp files you can download

Listen to your favourite artists or the style you like and make music like that, try to aim to their standard.

Dont send demos to labels before getting a review on the track and the quality of the track.

Labels like quality tracks and if you send them les than decent they could blacklist you.

And my friends have told me this, Guyver, Alf bamford, Gaz west etc.

play with the tutorials that come with fruity, really pick them apart and understand why they sound the way they do, use this to ur own advantage.

get a ton of vsti synths and play with them, work out what the envelopes do and what each knob does etc, once u got the idea, its all pretty much plain sailing.

make some drum patterns and throw a chord sequence in there with a synth, it wont sound much but it'll be refreshing compared to a plain beat, work around that.

but in general, just fuck around in FL, ur bound to come up with something, even if it is total shit.

The problem here is not about professional samples or vst plugins, so I would say don’t start buying samples or plugins right away. Start learning what comes with Flstudio itself. There are plenty of samples good enough to give u a good start. Spend time analyzing the tracks that already come with the program. Yes read tutorials, manuals, anything related to it. Try though to sort them by difficulty. After a year or so you might be ready to start buying quality samples, vst instruments etc. It's not as easy as it looks.
Mastering all this stuff takes a lifetime.

search fl studio tutorials in youtube, start from there. also check out the production section at euroadrenaline.com forums. this is how i started. learn the basics from youtube and do advanced things step by step. if you want to get some good samples i recommend vengeance essential clubsounds and samples from www.vipzone-samples.com (try the freeones) and any Vst's made by ReFx

Yep... and download Synth1, and the SuperwaveP8. Don't forget to purchase the FruitySoundfont player and download soundfonts from hammersound.net.
