Thumbs down RIAA Files Lawsuit Against Direct Connect!

I've just been discussing this on the EMC Hub chat room after I found out that the RIAA is to file a lawsuit against DC. Nobody seems to believe that DC will be harmed, but the RIAA is relentless when it comes to stopping the free distribution of music and I am quite worried

Please let me know your opinion of the article...

fuck riaa...they're really pissing me off..
they TOUCH DC, and i'd screw them one by one physically!

fucking ****s

Posted by beema on Apr-17-2003 21:06:

if they fuck with this, I will become to the RIAA what Osama bin Laden has been to the US these past few years.
fucking ****s
they will die
their families will die
and they will all rot in hell

Edit: please do not take the above statement literally, I am just very very angry

I think the riaa is in for a proper defacing about now.

Silly...

Posted by whiskers on Apr-17-2003 21:13:

well, what the hell can they do? there's no central server and they can't really go after the individual servers (i hope). looks like a war is on.

Posted by Abscond on Apr-17-2003 21:13:

Fucking assholes! Nevermind the fact most of the artists we care about don't belong to a greedy American label in the first place

Posted by JoEst on Apr-17-2003 21:17:

well havent these ****s learned anything from the past? everytime they shut something down, there will be an alternative
they better not touch our hub!

I realize it's worldwide influence but it's primary focus is with U.S. record labels, hence it's mission statement:

"The Recording Industry Association of America is the trade group that represents the U.S. recording industry. Its mission is to foster a business and legal climate that supports and promotes our members' creative and financial vitality. Its members are the record companies that comprise the most vibrant national music industry in the world. RIAA members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 90% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States."

According to the article, that is exactly what they are doing... suing the people who run the servers in their campus network:

quote:
The network operators sued by the RIAA for copyright infringement are from the following schools: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) [two individuals], Princeton University, and Michigan Technological University.

quote:
"We hope that these suits serve as a stiff deterrent to anyone who is operating or considering setting up a similar system."

I can understand not liking what the riaa is doing, but come on, how can you guys be so upset at a group for doing there job? Piracy does hurt there sales, not as much as they say, but it hurts them none the less. I can understand being upset, but your hatred seems a little unfounded.

it's shit i know - but once they start this sort of thing theres absoloutely nothing that any of us can do thta can stop them....well unless we go all John Rambo on em

Posted by jon on Apr-17-2003 22:02:

it looks like they are only targeting college networks atm, it will be very hard to target the dc software makers as now theres such thigs as dc++ which is openourse, 1000's of people have had a part in the making of the software.

the servers could be targeted, but it takes more effort to close down one server than create 10 servers so atm dircect conect is safe, so long as it isnt a localized college/uni network...

The RIAA dont seem to understand that they will never be able to stop the music of the record labels they represent being shared. Be it on FTP's, Napster, Kazzaa, Audiogalaxy - over the years you've been able to download all the popular big money making stuff and they have no way of stopping that.

It's the specialist dance music which is on the Hub, and if that was to close it would be hard to find an alternative.

In other words i am saying they have no way to stop their big money pop shite being shared - so why do they bother trying to stop our stuff that has fuck all to do with them? Are they simple???

WAR IS ON. im in!

Posted by torontotrance on Apr-17-2003 22:47:

They need to grow up, they were late with the mp3's. Had they got into it early, they could have controlled it. Maybe they will stop spending money fighting it and more time and energy marketing decent talent then people would buy it.

Side Note: Anyone know where I can buy Ulrich Schnauss - Far Away Passing Trains IN CANADA!

I hope the individuals arent hit too hard, I hoped at the very most theyre forced to shut down.

Posted by dEEkAy on Apr-17-2003 23:13:

lets move the server to a non-RIAA country

Posted by tranceaddict247 on Apr-17-2003 23:23:

i have no interest in buying or downloading wat the riaa is trying to protect, like the eminen and p diddy mainstreme stuff. i do download alot from the hub but mostly live mixes and preview of songs that i want to buy on vinyl. without the hub i would of bought so much less than wat i've bought now. i support my artists and hope they do well financially so they can keep bring us these amazing tunes.

Rasta

whats the actual likely hood of DC being shut down by RIAA?

nowt, as dc++ is opensource and it will be neraly imposible to stop that geting devoloped etc, as to running a dc server it depends on the country its hosted in atm but i dount that dc will disapear in the next few years

MP3s are a reality in todays world, so they need to find a way to work with them rather than fight against them...which is a never-ending losing battle. I just have one question, where is the porn industry in all of this
