Beautiful Things - A daft question probably

Andain - Beautiful Things. I love the tune, I think it's absolutely brilliant.

But I have a question - what is it about it that qualifies it as a "Trance" tune ?
I know it fits in nicely with other trance tunes - but is it trance itself ? To me, it sounds more like just a "song", and a damn good one. Can anyone explain please ?

It's not trance... It's a vocal progressive house tune, that's quite melodic, in my opinion

Er... I'd call it trance myself.

The beat is trancey, the synths are trancey... but really, the line between trance and house is very very hard to define. So if I had to call it anything I'd say "trance" (which is pretty vague) but it's best not to be too broad.

Posted by D'Paul on Apr-29-2003 23:14:

Its progressive house. How can you say the beat is trancey? In general, both have a 4/4 kick. Also, its pretty slow to be classified as trance. Of course, I'm assuming that we're talking about the Gabriel and Dresden remix.

It's a matter of opinion. It just doesnt have quite a synthetic sound to it compared to most trance tracks imo. Slightly drier slightly housier. Meh. *Shrugs*.

Yay, someone agrees with me.

Posted by OhioTranceFan on Apr-29-2003 23:56:

Id say its all prog house, but damn good. And is their any other mix besides the (Gabriel and Dresden Remix)? I have this sneaking feeling there may only be an original mix involved =]

Posted by Floorfiller on Apr-29-2003 23:58:

i would also say that its a proggy tune...of course around here...if its good it "must" be trance hehehehe. people here are scared to admit when they like a prog tune...

and there is an original mix...i heard that its a little more mainstreamish...

Posted by mikefasssy on Apr-30-2003 00:07:

I would say its trance, with a progressive element to it, g and d always say they wish there were more tracks around the 130is bpm and this is what it is.

and hey, if it makes teh tranceaddict community shit their pants because it is so good, i would classify it in a more trance type genre.

but regardless, genre whoring is really gay

Posted by Vinylgroovah on Apr-30-2003 01:02:

i would say its good electronica music.

I agree

if i had to put a label on it, i would prob say vocal prog house too. but i just consider it great dance music. i cant really call this one electronica cuz most of the song is done by live guitars.

see thats why its trance, if its vocal, and melodic then its progressive trance, progressive house Is WAY WAY WAY WAY dryer sounding, vocals are not near as melodic as this ch00n, and the beats are not to progressive house style this is a pure prog trance ch00n.

trance can be slow, airwave - lady blue, do you think that is trance, or how about some armin tunes, like vdm - shamu armin remix, those are pretty slow, i think its in between trance and prog though, dont know what you call that

mm, let's just call it Gabriel and Dresdenism

Isn't this a stereo-type progressive trance tune? It has all the elements of progressive trance in it...

Posted by D'Paul on May-02-2003 00:00:

I've always thought of progressive trance as very fast. Something along the lines of what a Christopher Lawrence spins and produces. Trance can indeed be kinda slow, but progressive house can't be fast (it stays between 120-130 bpm in general). As far as the elements of the track, the melodic vocals have that glossy echoed feel to them which is typical of prog. Also, how many trance tracks do you know with a garage bass line? I don't know, it doesn't matter, its a quality tune.

exactly! call it whatever you want. nowadays we live in an era of so many fusions and genre overlaps that it would be really naive to think that we can classify every track into a single genre. g&d have an unique sound and style, which is composed by both prog trance and prog house elements among other influences. they have that very warm and melodic sound that sound classier and more sophisticated than your average trance but not as dry as your average prog house. imo they are geniuses and visionaries that are ahead of their time.

stereotypical progressive is something thats minimal and ameks you want to go to sleep without any discernable melody
