New York Official Says Power Grid Overloaded -CNN
Thu August 14, 2003 05:04 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A New York State official said the Niagara Mohawk power grid overloaded on Thursday, causing a massive power outage, CNN reported, and New York Major Michael Bloomberg said it was likely a natural occurrence.
"It may be well into the evening before power comes back on," Bloomberg told the U.S. cable television network. He said smoke from a Consolidated Edison Inc. plant in the city was due to the plant's automatic shutdown, not to a fire, as had been reported.

He said, "I can tell you 100 percent sure that there is no evidence as of this moment whatsoever of any terrorism."

A massive power outage swept across swaths of the eastern United States and Canada on Thursday, leaving sections of New York, Detroit, Cleveland and Toronto without electricity, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear whether the Niagara Mohawk problem caused the wider outage.

....looks like I have to walk the Williamsburg Bridge to get back home...

Well that was fun. Apparently I had too many plugs in the outlet, sorry for any inconvenience that may have caused. Glad to see our power is back on.

i had a blast myself...everyone was out in billburg just chillin...i took lots of pics...couldnt find a blackout party though ....

Posted by loudcloud on Aug-15-2003 23:08:

I had a blast. They should have a blackout once a week. Greenwich Villiage was one huge party. I caught a pedicap (one of about 3 in NYC) from Tribeca up to 50th street. Open bar in the Plaza.

But... no music. And some people were hurt but we made it through

The rolling blackouts in California and this blackout do not compare. In California, they disconnected one small part of the grid at a time so that the power demand wouldn't overwhelm power generation capability. Thus at any given time only a small portion of the grid was without power, and only for a few hours at a time. Out here, the entire power distribution grid from NYC to Toronto to Detroit to Cleveland was without power for an extended period of time (20 hours for me out in Ann Arbor, MI). In Cleveland, the water distribution system draws its power from the grid, so they had it even worse out there--no power AND no running water.

I was under the impression that, after the Great Blackout of 1965, the power grid was designed so that such a widespread power failure would not occur again, but I guess I was wrong...

there was a new power grid installed...then the blackout in 1977 came along...then a NEWER power grid was installed...then the biggest blackout in history came...now they will build the power grid of power grids...until the NEXT biggest blackout in history...oobeedee, oobada...
