Thumbs up Sydney Godskitchen Review Thread

didn't see any other syd GK threads so I thought I'd start one... GK Syd turned out a lot better than I expected. Considering that it WAS "sharkies" and all. A few notes:

- no fight at the shark bar (there's a first!)
- the main room was the result of the joining of two smaller rooms (partition knocked down). pretty good. nicely carried sound all the way to the back. ventilation needs work though. ironically the right door had a label above it "snow room".
- security could have been tougher
- lasers were generally good all round
- crowd was mixed and I didn't see/run into any troublemakers (the way it should be at these things)
- bad luck for the djs in the first room as you go up the stairs (before entering main room) as there were stacks of people lining up for the "cloak room" the whole time. they should have moved the cloak downstairs to avoid such a situation
- parking was a bitch so we parked at the car park opposite Gas
- toilets in this place were always going to be a pain
- dude that dropped binary finary.. luvin it
- marco v.. cained (2 hrs did not do the man justice). wonder why he performed before m.i.ke? not that it mattered, worked out good.
- m.i.k.e.. could have been better, don't remember much of his set really
- amber savage.. impressive
- no matter what you call it, it's still the shark bar. It was good but wasn't "the best club" in sydney or whatever it's being advertised as. definitely a better venue than Manning would have been. Some big names coming to this venue soon.. Seaman... Sander K.. can't wait.
- always nice to see the Au.TA massive. Wasn't that massive this time round but still.. always makes the nite that much better. Beemer and the water spray.. fantastic

Overall... 3.75/5 (didn't go to last years GK.Syd so I can't compare. I went to GK.Melb and Armin + Flemming are definitely more to my liking though)

Werd to most of that .. the venue was OK but its still Shark Bar. Felt like I was at an RSL club :/

Aside from the massive ventilation problems in the main room, the 1 hour wait for the cloakroom (which dominated the breaks/prog room hehehe), and the "no Red Bull, no plain bottled water" at the bar, the place was OK. I just felt I should've been watching footy or playing pool or something

Sound was really crisp, lighting was ho-hum but the lasers were good.. MIKE's set was pretty damn good (Hatrixx - Miss You :eek, but Marco V is the fucking man!! Absolutely caned it! I told him to play Atlanta 020202 .. not only did he play it, he did an awesome mashup of Kid Vicious - Proceed in the breakdown Awesome stuff!! The man truly does have a style all on his own, nothing like I'd really heard before! Juicy, pounding, uplifting techtrance!

Shoutouts to the AUTA crew again, front row centre good to see And special respects to James and Sel, you guys know why

well, my summing up of the nite is "weird but good".....

the venue was a lil strange.....but it probably seemed a bit more that way cos of the fact that the typical big raver crowd ur used to at places like Homebush, was packed in there.....maybe i would appreciate it more and get a better feel for it with a smaller crowd who are more there for the music...like at Gas *lol* damn i am appreciating that place more and more every day!! (haha erratik, we ended up parkin there too!)

2 main gripes - carpet + dancing isn't a very fun mix.....i hope they have plans to rip up the carpet and put proper dancefloor in.....and, we need VENTILATION!! the heat in that place at times just wasn't healthy bragi, thanks for helping me remedy the situation with the 7-11 mission for the water spray...ahh i had fun putting some smiles on dials with that thing like i used to do - i think i need to change my TA name to 'hardworking and nifti!!'

i wasn't feelin too crash hot at the start of the nite.....but, as always, that improved when i found the front and centre TA crew....Cam, Sid, webby, Sel & James, Leigh (where did u disappear to?), misstrance, Hugoboss, erratik, spang, pimpdeluxe (nice to meet u!!) and anyone else i forgot to mention.....great to party with u as always!!

marco rocked my world....his style is just so different and so refreshing....after listening to lots of his stuff recently, i'm happy to say he played just like i hoped he would....my only complaint is that 2 hours was so not long enuff for him.....i'll def be checking him out more in europe next year

MIKE was awesome too....like a big ol yummy slice of melty cheese on toast speaking of melting - he sure was doing that up there poor guy was so hot - grrrr i so hope they set up the ventilation for the djs much better next time...he sure was grateful for my water spray tho *lol* i went to thank him for his awesome set afterwards - happy to report he was really lovely i know a grand total of 2 words in dutch, so i said them to him - 'dikke kus', and he said "hey, u have to give me one of those now!!"...so i did....he rocks

all in all, i'm glad i went....it turned out a lot better than i thought it would when i first got there.....the venue wasn't perfect (but they never are), but it's good to see ppl makin an effort to bring in new clubs......

btw, special thanks to james and sel for puttin up with me...hehehe....sorry about afterwards tho next time

note to self - just cos there are things in ur bloodstream which make u immune to pain, doesn't mean ur not doin urself damage......i got in the shower this morning, looked down, and noticed my shins are almost black with bruises from ankle to knee from climbing up to take pics all nite....no skirts for me at work this week - i can only imagine what my colleagues would think i'd been doin all weekend if they saw my legs!! geez, the things we do for our music

Posted by Beemer on Oct-06-2003 07:17:

ps. i always wonder - do guys have to put up with as many idiots in the bathrooms at events as girls do?? one girl last nite was a classic....the line was backed up and she starts chanting, cheer-leader style, 'come on girls, peeeeee faster...goooooo pee team!!!" over and over.....i'm surprised she made it outta there alive

/me tries to kick brain outta random posting mode....

Posted by waXology on Oct-06-2003 08:39:

Well.... what a night!!! what a weekend!!!!.... i thought it was going to be hard for GK to follow up from the Hustler lingerie party i went to on sat night but boy did it go off.

unfortunetly i could only stay for marco v's set as i had to work today 9-6

rocked up to see diggs & morro produce quality and then liquid m step up the pace a bit, had awonder round with the crew for a bit while nervous and pee wee were doing the usual... i was amazed i heard them play electronic malfunction, signum - push through and pee wee even dropped David Forbes - Answers.

whiel waiting for marco i managed to cut my finger open on some glass on the ground but it didnt dampen my night.

Marco was truly amazing, set was structured brilliantly kicked off very housy and techy and built it up in the true marco style.

Marco V tracks included: (im sure the crew could add to this)

Adam Freeland - Smells like freeland
Ron van Den Bueken - Timeless
Dj - Tiesto - Traffic
Dj Ton TB - Electronic Malfunction
Marco V - Atlanta 22.02.02
Marco v - Simulated
Energy 52 - Cafe del mar (Marco V remix)
Marco V - Bells <------ His new track!! AMAZING
Vincent de Moor - No Hesitation
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - By The Way (Marco V Short Hard Trance Mix)
Westbam - Right On (Deutschmann Remix)
Junkie Xl - Red Pill Blue Pill
Solar Stone vs Scott Bond - 3rd Earth (Marco V remix)
Tube Tech - The End (Vanguard Remix)
pink floyd wall??remix??
Dirty Bass - Emotional Soundscape
Jens - Loops & Things (Marco V Remix)

Once again was great to be front row centre with all the crew.. Sid,Joel,Alli,Chookie,Bragi,Erratik,Lisa,HugoBoss and all the others on the night like spang, wade, muli etc... top night..

NOW... the venue... im not happy really its massive yes, and is capable of a wicked party, i think the arena layout needs to be reviewd.... ventilation is horrible.... by midnight it was already unbearable... and had that 'instant sweat' feel when u walked in the door... took me back to the old rave days ROFL i was also told the dj monitors were shocking and it was almost impossible to use them meaning most of the djs were using 100% headphone mixing.

lights were great, allthough i think the operator was a bit excited and i was getting irritated at the beggining... but the lasers worked a treat.

Sound at the beggining was piss weak as i could have a normal conversation without shouting. as the night went on it got better but still i think it needed more kick. allthough i noticed its clarity was amazing and no dj was able to hide, everything could be heard through this clear system.

so i think the boys at shark hotel have some work ahead of them but good attempt non the less

thast my 2 cents... now i need sleep as i havent slept yet.

some nice tunage there.
don't think there's a marco v remix of bjork's joga though
that'd be dirty bass - emotional soundscape.
how's "bells" like? heavy bass line like "godd" or weak like "c:\del mp3" (didnt like that tune) =/

all in all was a really good night ! it was going to be be ultra hard to top James Holden on Friday night but Marco V exceeded my expectations and really ripped it up. MIKE was ok, however I thought he was on the techy side, and could have dropped some melody in his set (but I guess he was playing to the crowd). Pee Wee dropped some nice tunage David forbes - Questions must be asked, Signum - Push through and one of my all time favs Misja helsloot - First second.

Venue was average in my mind ! no ventilation what so ever ! Cam and I were walking in out of rooms just so we could breathe. Hopefully next year they could shift it to a venue like Home or something.

Big shout out to all the ta's made it an awesome night: Cam, Joel, Hugo, Mark, Lisa, Alli, Sel and James, Eddie, Erratik, Pimp_Deluxe, Wade and anyone else I forgot. Always a pleasure to party with you guys.

Just got back from working all day with no sleep....fun,fun,fun!

All up i had a good night. For me it felt like i was in some all age rave in some warehouse. Place was really dark and the crowd seemed really diverse.

Started off in Trance room but liquid m played a bit too hard for me at the end but it lead up to nervous and i couldnt believe it when he dropped Cosmic Gate- Exploration of space...totally unexpected

Went down to the frantic room and really enjoyed it down there. Pumping NRG all the way!!

Then there was Marco V. That was on of the PHATest, darkest, tribal, progressive trance, tech, techno sets ever. i have never heard anything that crazy. Build- ups felt like they went for about 10 minutes each but it was all worth it when those crazy drums kicked in and the bass blew me away. He also played Dilusion- Like this.

Push was alright but for a 4.30- 6 set i think he should have played abit faster than he did. Dont know what that mad vocal track he played that kept building and building was. Please help me out on this one.

All up a good night was had. Its been said but it was way to hot in there and security was pretty pathetic. No id check or bag check or really anything check. Could lead to trouble maybe???

Anyway i got all my records signed as always. About half of them (8 out of 16 ) got the signature slightly ruined as the pen was still wet when i put them ontop of each other. Theres always next year and he told me he will be back next year.

Good to see all the usual crew keeping the trace alive. Didnt dance with you guys as i needed some room to move. HAHA, i didnt live up to the label you have given me (some of you know what im talking about).

Till next time.

p.s. Beemer, i didnt even know that was you when you were talking to me. i thought you were someone else so sorry if i may have seemed abit rude.

Well im gonna be the odd one out and say quite frankly the night was pretty average for me!! Yet another night when our home grown heroes outshone the internationals!!

The night started off well with Diggs & Morro kicking off a great set in the main room, (Archie was also playing some nice beats in the liberty room) after which i ducked across to see my fav techhouse DJ Robbie Lowe rip it up as usual! Then a procession of great dj's played in the prog room - Scott Oliver and Simon Bell, Scott Baker and Muli. Superb!!!

Ducked back into the main room for Marco V and have to say i was bored shitless, stayed at the front for 30-40 mins then went up the back so i could get some amusement from the lasers, spent the next 2.5 hours dancing with Muli, Karli and Naomi (and giving heaps of massages ) before growing bored of Mike's set and going back to the prog room!

The venue itself was rather dissapointing, the reverb in the main room was fuckin annoying (thats what you get when only half the damping is in place!), the cloak room line cutting across the prog room pissed me off, the running out of water before 12:30 was ridiculous, and the ventialtion was non-existant!!!

Dont get me wrong i had fun (especially up until 2) but compared to what i was expecting i was very dissapointed!! It was an ok night, but definitely not worth the $60 i forked out!! I wish i had made Sweetchilli my BIG night rather then GK - it was 1000 times better!!

Glad everyone else enjoyed it, but i guess i wasnt on the same vibe! Next time maybe......

I had such a great time. Marco V made the night for me!!
It was great to see all us TA's up front and centre again. Thanks Beemer for the great idea of the water spray, it made things a bit more bearable!

Venue was ok, lasers were awesome! Lifts very dodgy!

Posted by PVDsANGEL on Oct-07-2003 04:39:

I can only describe the night as weird and must agree with Lee that it was very average. I got myself so hyped up thinking it was going to be something it was not so was overall disappointed. The vibe in the place just did not feel right and it had this industrious feel. The crowd differed from room to room but and in some areas I felt like I was at Progress and felt I did not belong but I stuck to our trance room and thanks to familiar smiling TA faces I felt more like at Halcyon.

Things are what we make them and I must admit by half way through the night I was kind of having a good time but could only dance so long before needing a break as it was almost impossible to breathe in there. What really spoiled it for me is I had to go to the car around 5:30am and got a passout pass with promise of being let back in but upon return was told that no-one can get back in. Had to wait out the remainding 1.5 hrs in car as Alli who I was traveling back to ACT with was still in there. Apologies to Alli, James and Sel for my bad mood on the way home but hope you understand. Lee, Joel and everyone else...will make up for not saying goodbye next time

on another note, if anyone wants to see some of my pics of the night.. check em out here

Bit of a late reply but I'll put in my 2c anyway.

I had a pretty unreal night overall, despite some of the shortcomings of the venue. Don't believe the hype regarding the extensive renovations to the venue, because I was there about 3 months ago for the Astral Projection gig and nothing much had changed other than the sound system and DJ booths. I still think it is a good venue, especially if downstairs is used as well, but it needs better toilets, air conditioning, bigger cloak room, and running out of water halfway through the event was a bit of a joke.

But luckily the music on the night made up for all those problems (well it did for me anyway). I spent the first few hours in the Liberty room and heard some great music from Scott Oliver, Simon Bell, Scott Baker and Muli. Then it was back to the GK room to hear Marco V and M.I.K.E. and boy did they deliver! Marco V's set was just relentless from start to finish, blurring the lines between trance and techno, and he played quite a few of his own tracks and remixes which was good to hear. Got 3 records signed too which was great.

M.I.K.E.'s set was also excellent, lots of hands in the air moments, as well as some more underground techy tracks to keep things interesting. It was such a great honour for me to be in his presence and for him to play Universal Nation (although it may have been expected) will go down as one of my most memorable clubbing moments. I wish he played more of his own tracks but that's just a minor complaint. I wasn't able to identify many tracks in his set but remember hearing

Push - Universal Nation (obviously)
AR52 - Timegate
Kansai - Rococco (Fire & Ice Remix)
Umek - Gatex (DJ Tiesto Remix?)
M.I.K.E. - Turn The Lights Out

Anyone got some more?

Only downer of my night was not getting my records signed by M.I.K.E. because I didn't leave the main room soon enough to get them from the cloak room. I didn't realise I'd be standing in line for 15 minutes but maybe if there was more than 1 person working there I might have got back before he left

A big shout to the ITM/TA crew who I partied with on the night, you know who you are. It wouldn't have been as good without you guys.

Yeah it's got the same riff (unless he was sampling it) from:

Jens - Loops and Tings (1993)

The Froot Loop Mix of that was one of the first tracks that got me into trance and I still love it to this day. Got it on vinyl too

I'll start wit the major thing I remember from the night.

Marco V!

I loved his set. I thought it was so good. Thouroughly enjoyed it.

The heat. Oh my the heat. Even at the hottest events I've been to like Armin and Infected Mushroom at GAS I've never even broken a sweat. At 6am when I left Godskitchen my shirt was soaking wet. I remember shaking webbies hand as I floated off to half pass out against a wall. I was just so damn hot, I think my brain got fried.

Thank you so much for that spray bottle beemer. Didn't know it was you until this thread. I was the tall rangy fellow impersonating a cooked lobster.

Marco V was definately the highlight for me. I really liked D&M's set as well. I always assume security guards are going to be dicks and never bring a jacket so my main gripe was with the Burning Hot Magma like temperatures; and that whole inability to breath due to lack of oxygen thing.

So displeased I don't remember Kansai - Rococco being played. I love this track. Also wish the Liberty dj's had a better "room".

I had a fantastic night and it was great seeing so many Halcyon regulars

It's the same one Marco played at the end of his Sensation 03 set .. I'm relying on memory, but you're probably right like usual
