Unhappy gettin' a headache...

Noobies to trance and techno must get discouraged by all the different genres and sub-genres of this vast musical universe.
Will someone please suggest where I should begin...I find that half the stuff I download is progressive or hardtrance...(no offence but, blech! Im not there yet!)
Based on my favourites below, what would you say is NOT TO BE MISSED!!

Ian Van Dahl - Castles in the Sky
Final Fantasy (?? not sure if this artist) - I Close My Eyes
Atomizer - Hooked On Radiation
Robert Miles - Fable & Children
DJ Sammy ( I know..I know, sorry) - Sunlight
Shakedown - At Night (Original Mix)
The Cynic Project - Matrix II
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel

I absolutely can't stand Tiesto - Traffic for some reason. Does this give enough information about what genre I like? Please be objective but not overly cruel

Thanks a million...
- Digital Aura

If you like these you may like Alice Deejay, Darude, ATC, ATB... I'm just fucking with you. To the others, I know Darude has changed for the better now so I don't wanna get all your shit. Seriously though, check out ATB & Darude.

I think you should begin looking into epic trance too. Check out Airscape & older Ferry Corsten productions.

Oh, and welcome to TA!

Posted by Psygnosis on Oct-15-2003 00:39:

well Ian Van Dahl make some decent remixes, like Oxygen - Am I On Your Mind (IVD Remix) IMO this remix was much better than the lustral remix...it wasn't as boring...

but yeh Dj Sammy, please kick him off your mind...pure disgrace to electronica.

By the way if you want some quality trance, check my sig.

Posted by fitom tiel on Oct-15-2003 00:46:

youll get to progressive, eventually

for now,

azzido da bass - doom's night (timo maas)
joy kitikonti - joyenergizer
space frog - follow me
kai tracid

the quest - c sharp
rank 1 - awakening
tillman uhrmacher - on the run (ocean to shore)
robbie rivera - funk-a-tron
viframa - cristalle (katana's intro)

or you can go the other way:
andain, motorcycle. james holden - nothing (93 returning)

pick your path.
those were amongst my basics.

LOL what makes you so in touch with song information??

We would know know a billion times more about trance than you aswell.

gouryella - gouryella
anthemic qualities, but less cheezy and just plain better IMO

Not quite, but if you want i can.

You don't want to help the new TA out since he is a newb...what are you?

I'm sure every single newb that got into electronica liked cheese music...so what makes this newb any different...

Posted by Chang monkey on Oct-15-2003 01:07:

DIGITAL AURA START WITH THESE:

Gouryella - Tenshi
PVD - Nothing but you
Sasha - Xpander
Marco v -Simulated
Iio - Rapture (AVB remix)

Exactly my point...
I said cut me some slack...if it werent for the cheese in this genre I doubt you'd ever have ANY newbs.
I forced myself to listen to TIESTO and I have to say that it's an acquired taste.
What sub-genre would you say me (an most newbs) start with? Its usually more melodic and repetitions are generally shorter or progress faster. Is there a name for that specific genre?
Thanks for all the suggestions...
I'm in a city with no good record stores so I have to rely on mail order or WinMX.
- Digital Aura

P.S. whoever suggested PVD - Nothing But You was bang on!!! I meant to put that on my original list of favs!!!

Posted by DjSimonB on Oct-15-2003 22:45:

Tiesto - Suburban Train - you listened to that? More uplifing and stuff... Traffic is probably a bit of a hard track to listen to for someone getting into trance, its more of a club track than a listening to at home track IMO

Posted by DasBrotBesser on Oct-15-2003 23:12:

I'd say try some of Tiesto's Magik series. They're definitely different then his stuff like Traffic. Also, Paul Oakenfold - Tranceport seems to be a very popular cd for people coming in to trance (i still love it), and Sasha & Digweed - Northern Exposure series are popular ones too.

Posted by Christopher B on Oct-15-2003 23:29:

Here are some tunes I think you will really like, based on your current style:

Madonna - What it Feels Like for a Girl (Above and Beyond Remix)
Oceanlab - Clear Blue Water
The Thrillseekers - Dreaming of You
Hydra - Affinity (Thrillseekers' Dub)
Lost Witness - Red Sun Rising (Lange Remix)
ATB - 9PM (till I come) (Matt Darey Remix)
Gouryella - Gouryella
Gouryella - Walhalla
Aly and Fila - Eye of Horus (Ronski Speed Mix)
Solid Globe - North Pole
Labworks - Ibiza Sunrise (Shane 54 mix)
4 strings - Into the Night
Barthezz - On the Move (Riva Remix)
PPK - ResuRection
Paul van Dyk - Another Way
Tiesto - Theme From Norefjell (don't be discouraged by traffic, this is a quality tune!)
Kamaya Painters - Far From Over (Original Mix)

Posted by fitom tiel on Oct-15-2003 23:38:

are you ready for sasha yet?

sasha - wavy gravy

-

gouryella - walhlalla (armin van buuren's rising star remix)

Posted by mavo on Oct-16-2003 02:19:

Hello!

Welcome

I would say try this http://www.arminvanbuuren.com/playlist/

more than likely you will like what armin plays in ASOT. Newest tunes and picks for the week. This is definately where yo want to start for trance. Browse the playlists and find what you like

greetings,
Mario .

Smile sorta new

hey im new to these boards and have been into edm for about 2yrs now and the cds and tracks that got me into i the music when i look back are embarrasing but when someone mentions ppk-ressurection THAT had to be the one that crossed over...My first intro was cheese trance and the webster hall rmxs (which aint too bad) but then i graduated to euro stuff after a trip to euro...gigi d'agostinos un giorno credi, mario piu- love game and all of picotto...I went from webster hall to paul oakenfold (which was just a phase) to picotto(techno) and now to pvd. One thing i could not really get into was house. I only liked tenaglias tribal stuff (granted i only heard 20 min of him)
So to the newbie--enjoy your voyage thru the genres :-)

Welcome to TA!! First off, have a good time on the boards. As for that list of yours, erm... oh dear. Haha, jk! Everyone likes what they like. If I were you, i'd listen to more of what other people have suggested, like Andain, Armin Van Buuren, some Tiesto stuff (yeah I think Traffic sucks donkey's as well), and Motorcycle amongst others. That way you can broaden your horizons and get a feel for other types of trance, rather than the (cheesy) stuff you're into at the moment. If you decide you still like DJ Sammy after listening to all the recommends in this thread, fair enough!

Thumbs up AWESOME

This is gettin' good...

Posted by Psygnosis on Oct-16-2003 12:54:

Digital Aura, get those songs i posted in the other thread you posted and also get these...

Sasha - Xpander (Original)
Three Drives - Greece 2000 (Original)
Lost Tribe - My Soul (Original)
Mike Shiver - Feelings (Cosmicman remix)
Mirco De Govia - Epic Monolith (Original)

there is more, but i'll tell ya later i guess.

Unhappy ...my conundrum

Psygnosis...my problem is that Gnutella and kazaa (and all the p2p shareware that uses these networks) isn't a great source for these underground works. The problem with this genre is that it ISNT WELL KNOWN (not Mainstream) and those members that have the songs offered online are sooooo much in demand that its next to impossible to queue a download from them.
I'll keep lookin'!
