Personal Reality Check
I know there was a point where I was a proud member of the Alcoholics club. If there was one thing I took with me from college, it was how to affectively binge drink on the weekends.
I'll be the first to admit, getting drunk as hell was fun. Hell, it still is if I ever wanted to push it again. The problem is I can't, and I won't. I was a dumbass, you see. A real dumbass. I drove all the time while I had too many. Too many times, in fact. There were times I didn't even f$cking know I was driving, and somehow I made it home. Of course, there isin't anything unique about me drinking and driving. Happens all the time, esp. while living in a college town like I do. And like most, I thought I was fine driving while drunk. I think I developed this reputation in high school of being the best designated driver, though I wasn't very designated, and I was usually lit up like a torch. I could just focus better than most, at least that's what I told myself.
Strangely, the situation that developed wasn't about me, but about my wife. Like me and many others, she drove home drunk on a number of occasions. She just wasn't as lucky as myself, unfortunately. One night exactly 7 weeks ago she and I were out with friends of ours from out of town. We both had to work the next day, and cut our night short with our buddies. Trouble is, we were both piss drunk. What's worse, we both drove separately. So being the good husband that I was, I decided she was okay enough to drive, and I would follow her.
Of course, being in a separate car behind her, there was nothing I could do about the car that sideswiped her on her side as she slid through a stop sign on that rainy night. There was only the sound of me screaming out her name as I saw it right behind her. Or the sound of me yelling for help as I was running towards her car at top speed. There was nothing I could do but stop the blood running down her face from her open gash wounds. And there was nothing I could do about the door wedged into her leg, shattering her pelvis in many different places. There was nothing I could do as I watched the firemen use the jaws of life tear open the top of her car, hoping that the thing in my life which matters most is still alive and will hopefully make it. There was nothing I could do that night in the ER, or in the LifeFlight, or in the hospital as we waited for surgery on her pelvis. The only thing I could do was be there for her the whole time, praying that she will be okay, thanking God in heaven that she is still alive, begging someone, anyone for forgiveness for our complete stupidity, and personally begging for forgiveness for not driving her home myself. After all, I was the one who could focus the best while driving drunk, right?
Oh, there was one other thing I did for her: I kept myself up all night after her surgery. Because of the 5 hr. surgical proceedures, she wasn't allowed pain killers until she awoke, until after the anesthesia wore off. And when she did wake, never have I seen her or anyone in my life in more pain. They couldn't have started her morphine drip soon enough, nor could the other pain meds. kick in soon enough. You should really understand what it feels like to watch the love of your life, the person whom is the center of your life from which you've built yourself around, in complete wretched agony beyond the point of crying because of your utter stupidity together. So I sat up and pushed her morphine drip every 10 min. as she attempted to put her mind somewhere else, somewhere away from the pain.
And now it's 7 weeks later, and talking about it still brings up so much hurt and emotional dismay. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and she's up on crutches moving around. Hopefully in a month she'll be able to walk without her crutches, and within 2-3 months she'll be able to go back to work. Of course, she'll never be able to run again, which is heartwrenching for her because she was an avid runner. But she has perspective: she's alive, which is all I care about. Of course we still have some other major obstacles: DUI charge, insurance threatening to drop us (at the very least the premiums will be sky high), medical bills (if it wasn't for my work insurance, ~$60,000 and not $2,000 to cover), finding another car, among other things. But we dodged a major f$cking bullet, and someone up there was gracious enough to give our dumbasses a second chance.
And the wet blanket award goes to?
Sorry, I've read a number of posts which refer to the fun of being drunk. I know that doesn't necessarily equate to drunken driving, but it is often the case for some, including myself. I only ask you to please be careful. If you're gonna get piss drunk, do yourself and others on the road a favor and take a cab. You owe it to your loved ones to remain alive the next morning.

I'll never understand the mentality of driving when you're wasted. Like we haven't been bombarded enough in the media with stories and huge multi-million dollar ad campaigns to get the point across that driving drunk kills people?! No offense or anything, it sucks that you became one of the statistics, but I have very little sympathy for those who drive drunk. If you do it long enough, it will have consequences, often fatal. What was the condition of the person who sideswiped your wife's car?
