Progressive Trance

What are all your takes on it? By that I mean who are some artists/what are some tunes that you consider progressive trance? I was talking with someone on Oldo's a couple days ago who claimed that PvD was prog trance, but I didn't think so. What are your opinions?

Posted by aloep on Oct-27-2003 01:47:

DISCLAIMER: The below is just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

For me, I define progressive trance as such stuff like what was released on labels like Jackpot, Skinnymalinky, Whoop, Stress, Fluid and the likes during the 90's and nowadays is a style that's somewhat few and far between. I'm not too great at explaining but I'll give it a go, it's a lot less minimal in content than progressive house and a lot more synthy, yet generally slower than standard "trance" and doesn't have such a big "climax"

Examples of what in my opinion is progressive trance:

Squelch - Crash (Danny Howells Original Mix)
Desert - Feelings Run So Deep
Tarentella - Deep Down
Breeder - The Chain
Evolution - Phoenix (Breeder Mix)
Dream Traveller - Time (Edge Factor Mix)
React 2 Rhythm - Intoxication (Digweed & Muir's Bedrock Mix)
Atlas - Compass Error (Tarentella Vs Redanka Remix) - One of the rare examples of progressive trance from the past year.
Dominion - Re-creation
Coyote - Spirits Dancing (Yekuana's Miracle Brew Mix)
Blue Amazon - The Runner
Fade - Heaven To Heaven
Arkarna - The Future's Overrated (Evolution's Time Bomb Mix)
Sian - Stronger Together (Andy Ling's Aryan Dub)
Max Graham vs Starecase - Love The Bomb

Most of the producers who did what I would define as progressive trance have either moved onto a deeper, more minimal progressive house sound or into other genres these days. Describing it as "somewhere between progressive house and trance" would pretty much sum it up in short.

And yes, I'd also agree with you that PvD isn't Progressive Trance.

C'mon, let's keep this thread going! Name some producers/DJs/etc. that you'd consider prog trance.

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-27-2003 02:06:

gu011 = prog trance
gu012 = prog trance
gu013 = epic and some prog trance
gu014 = prog trance in parts

that settle it?

See the problem today is that too many deejays blur the lines between progressive house and progressive trance that most people have no clue what it is.

Nubreed 4 cd 2, later part of it is prog trance.

Paul definitely is not progressive trance.

Aloep made a great explanation, so I'll just put some more examples. Bedrock, Renaissance, and Hook were in on the progressive trance action when they started up, too, but soon turned towards the dark progressive house we all know and love/hate.

Luzon - The Baguio Track
Sasha - Xpander
Underworld - Cowgirl (Bedrock Mix)
Libra pres. Taylor - Calling Your Name (Original Mix)
Sasha & Emerson - Scorchio
Sander Kleinenberg - My Lexicon
Bedrock - Heaven Scent
Bedrock - Lifeline
Bedrock - Set In Stone
Bedrock - Forbidden Zone
James Holden - Nothing
James Holden - Horizons (Way Out West Remix)
Carissa Mondavi - Solid Ground (Fade Vocal Mix)
Paganini Traxx - Zoe (Timo Maas Remix)
Junkie XL - Beauty Never Fades
Junkie XL - Bon Voyage
Junkie XL - Zerotonine
Junkie XL & Sasha - Breezer
Space Manoeuvres - Stage One
Odessi - Moments of Space
Tilt - I Dream (Tilt's Ressurection Mix)
Stoneproof - She Does (Quivver mix)
Quivver - One Last Time
Sphere - Gravity
Andy Ling - Fixation
Andy Ling - Futura
Origin - Wide Eyed Angel
The Light - Panfried
Gus Gus - Purple (Sasha vs The Light Mix)
Breeder - The Chain (Babealicious Mix)
Breeder - Tyrantantric (Slacker's Kingdom Come Remix)
Orbital - Nothing Left (Breeder Remix)
Evolution - Phoenix (Breeder Mix)
Evolution - Walking On Fire (Bedrock Vocal Mix)
Arrakis - Medusa (Evolution Dub)
Arakis - Aira Force (Lemon 8 Remix)
Greed - Strange World (Blackwatch Dub)
Blackwatch - Skin Deep (Gulf of Tonkin Mix)
Way Out West - Activity
Way Out West - Domination
Way Out West - Spike
Way Out West - Ajare
Way Out West - UB Devoid
(Most other Way Out West productions)
Taylor - Slide
Taylor - Xenophobe
Natious - Flashpoint
Natious - Amber
Natious - Stylo
Natious - Thrust One
(Uh, everything by Natious)
Subsky - Four Days
Midtone - Pearl
Max Graham - Tell You
Max Graham - Falling Together
Max Graham - Backdraft
(Most Max Graham productions, although he is in a class of his own; maybe "epic progressive"?)

Hook:
Progressive trance of a trancy style was the hallmark of the Hook label up until about a year or two ago, such as:

DeNiro - Mind of Man
DeNiro - Evolver
DeNiro - Elan Vital
X-Cabs - Infectious
Christopher Lawrence - Renegade
Christopher Lawrence - Wasteland
Christopher Lawrence - Interceptor
Christopher Lawrence - Rush Hour
etc.

Early Renaissance compilations
Some of the earlier Global Underground
Early compilations from D:Fuse, Noel Sanger, and Dave Seaman
Oh, and of course Sasha - GU013: Ibiza

This was trance before the anthem, before Sasha and Diggers turned their back on the sound, as well as a bit of spinoff once the Oakenfold-style began to take its own course. Christopher Lawrence still spins his own unique brand of it, but not too many others.

Hope this helps. I've tried to pin down this genre for a while. Feel free to take potshots.

sometimes it's really hard to tell whether it's prog house or prog trance

well pvd is definately not prog trance
i know this guy who thinks that
the way he gets his music is by going on p2ps and looking up the word trance

Posted by Perfect_Cheezit on Oct-27-2003 07:02:

I think a lot of these labels applied to minimal differences in sounds are pretty irrelevant

but as listed, theyve put forth some pretty convincing titles but unless the difference is REALLY overt I really dont care whether you call it prog house trance tech death as long as you like it, its your opinion after all

Posted by Slapskin on Oct-27-2003 07:29:

sasha - cloud cuckoo (luke chable mix). to me this is trance. not prog not fuckin epic just trance. thats how the genre should be called as one thing. its so damn stupid to categorize it into subgenres.

Ah, this is a point where many get confused. Most of the tracks you've listed are progressive house.

Posted by Cobalt on Oct-27-2003 07:43:

And please, not to be rude, but if you subscribe to the whole "don't label, just listen to good music!" thing, get the hell out of threads like this. Some of us do care, and it's insulting that you would swish away genre classifications just because you find them inconvenient or confusing.

There are distinct differences. If you don't want to bother with them, that's fine. But don't go forcing others to abandon their efforts to describe music to a finer degree. It happens in every fucking genre thread that pops up.

When I think of "progressive trance" this is the first track that comes to mind.

Also pretty much all of GU013, if I could classify one album as mostly "progressive trance".

Agree with you. Most of that list is prog house. Struggling to find any prog trance in there (what's 2 mix of Nothing like -- that could be either) actually

These days the Diggers and Bedrock types wouldn't touch the T-word with a ten foot pole.

Posted by Slade on Oct-27-2003 10:33:

most progressive trance these days is actually coming from psy trance producers & labels

Posted by PEZ68 on Oct-27-2003 10:44:

And what about Airwave? I consider what he produces as progressive trance too

Posted by montie on Oct-27-2003 10:47:

yup i pretty much agree with everyone here

i think of prog. trance as trance which is more minimal and more chilled out in comparison to the more epic fastpaced stuff.
I'd don't go along with that "progressive is the good music" elitist crap.

in my book, Sasha's GU 13 Ibiza CD 1 is the best Prog. Trance Mix compilation.

some great examples i'd like to add

MRE - The Deep Edge (featured on GU13)
Sander Kleinenberg - My Lexicon and Sacred (also featured on GU13)
Spooky - Little Bullet
Breeder - Twilo Thunder
Breeder - Tyrantanic
(pretty much anything by Breeder)
Starkid - Crayons
Mandalay - Deep Love (Charlie May Remix)
James Holden - A Break in the Clouds
Underworld - Dark and Long (Dark Train mix)

oh and PvD definatly is not a good example of Progressive Trance.
yes he plays some proggy trance songs, but not nearly as much as other DJs.

From a technical point of view, MOST prog-trance is produced in 64 beat phrases, where as trance is 32 beat phrases.
