Best comment during a gig?

So, tell me, What is the funniest/dumbest/dorkiest/worst etc. thing said to you during a gig?

I got to hear often from guys something like "I get pussy tonight if you play this or that tune"

........so whats in it for me?

Posted by BelgianGuru on Oct-31-2003 17:19:

Well it's not funny if you weren't there, but I was doing a one hour set at a 'Trance party', and on the prints and flyers it said 'Underground Trance 2 DIE 4'. So I'm all happy to do my set, cause everybody is supposed to be there for Underground music. There's this rather hot girl that comes over and says, really cocky 'None of my friends know the music you play, do you have vengaboys ?'. That killed me

too many to list

Top 3 Quotes for my D.C. lounge gigs

1) "Do you have anything besides 'club music'?" (while playing deep jazzy house)
2) "Do you have any hip hop?"
3) (Next quote said before I even started playing, I was still setting up my turntables) "Are you the DJ tonite? I fucking HATE dance music."

Posted by Pjotr G on Oct-31-2003 20:34:

Aye there are some dumb people around.

Somebody requested a track during my live-set. Hmm lady, notice how there's no records or cd's around only keyboards, synths, samplers and stuff? And some people don't understand that and think you're too cocky to play their request....doh

Posted by I Cant Focus on Oct-31-2003 20:52:

My fav comment of all time would have to be:

"You fucking suck. Play some hip hop."

Posted by dartman on Oct-31-2003 20:59:

some chick "no offense, but when are you going to play something good"
me "like what? what would you like to hear?"
same chick "shake your tailfeather, and majic stick.....etc"

yikes

This is a great thread, I have to add some more.

Fortunately, this didn't happen to me...

I was watching my buddy spin in D.C., he's playing a great funky house set, throwing some 80's in the mix, got people dancing. This girl comes up to him and asks if he would take a break & play her full length pop CD. What a retard. He was cool about it, he let it play for 2 songs & then he mixed out of it.

Arrow

Definitely many pop-retards out there!

Posted by montie on Oct-31-2003 22:34:

i once was DJing a house party and this stupid bitch came up to me and kept telling me to play 80's music or "something she could dance too" (I was playing funky and proggy house and the place was rocking).
i was nice to her at first and was like, "well here's the closest to 80's music i have, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode" so i threw on the G&D remix of "I need you" everyone there was going crazy. these three dudes came up to me to find out the name of the track.
but stupid bitch comes back and was like "no body's dancing, play something i can dance to"
i told her to jsut look at the dance floor cuz everyone was dancing except her.
of course she kept bothering me and telling me to play her music. i kept igonring her. and eventually she started yelling at me, and i told her to fuck off, that she didn't know shit, everyone else was dancing except for her sorry ass.
then she gave me the finger and stormed out

hahahahah thats the cokiest thing ive ever heared hahahahahhaha
man people just dont know anything about music. They don't have the click and the passion for music, they just go for whatever is on tv like 50cent and all that crap. they have no good taste...

Posted by rxt on Nov-01-2003 02:56:

youll never ever ever get away from those 'can you play hip hop?' questions. honestly, i dont mind spinning hip hop, if thats what i am brought to the party to play.

this one time, my friend asked me to play a hard trance set for his party and while i was spinning some guy came up to me and asked if i could play 50 cent - in da club. I told him that i was doing a hard set now and that song would never mix in... trying to be nice i said, maybe when my set finishes in an hour ill try to throw down some hiphop, as long as no other djs are planning to spin. The BPM of my set was 139-140.. and about 2 mixes later this guy comes up to me again and asks again for 50 cent. I tell him, no, not in this set... it wont mix. And he flat out tells me "no, you are wrong, it mixes perfectly with this song".

Everytime people asks for request i never diss their music. Even if its pop that they love now, but will hate in 2 months... i try to be nice and throw something down that they will enjoy. but fuck, i was so pissed off... people telling the DJ how to spin is just retarded.

During a techno/trance/hardtrance DJ-set

me: "ummm that's not in my record crate"

he: "oh come on just play it!"

My top three most hated questions asked.

3. Do you have any Jay-Z
2. What is this music called (While playing Progressive Trance)
and the number one hated question of all time.
1. When are you done so we can listen to some HIP HOP!

I really think its funny when people ask these question in a non-hip hop club.

i'm still many moons away from getting my first gig but i'm gonna remember this stuff so that i can have an appropriate response for these kind of dipshits...must be all the pop music and crap hip-hop that made 'em stupid.

Posted by Cosmic Realm on Nov-02-2003 05:06:

ummm i would say what happened to me tongiht..guy comes up to me and says "dude we need to get this party pumpin..play some hip hop yo" when everyone on this dance floor is going craxy right so i told the dude "sorry man i left my 50 cent collection at home sorry bro" (I spinn Trance, and Breaks)

Posted by jdat on Nov-02-2003 06:00:

well I've not been djing for couple years and right now all I do is visuals and it seems you get lots more retarded questions :

what's the track playing right now ?

Like they'll ask me that all the time Like I'm supposed to know ( I've done visuals for tons of dnb djs and many styles and I obviously can't know all tunes )

can you play something else please ? Sorry but I'm NOT the dj.

I love the tunes you're playing !

and so on ... quite funny that the same questions always come back.

Posted by jonnycarcinogen on Nov-02-2003 20:39:

Average joe music fan isn't going to know that a request dj (radio, weddings) is something different than the djs we speak of here. They're usually too dense to comprehend it even if you sit down with them and explain the differences.

YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF BEING ON THIS SITE!!!

lol man, j\k...i'm not big on hip-hop, but it isn't bad to hear at some parties, cuz some people actually like that stuff and i can respect that. but when retards come up to you asking to play hiphop in the middle of a hard trance set, that's just not right.

i also have much respect for any dj. it takes a lot of guts to get out in front of people and try to get them to dance and enjoy the music, and some people just can't stand electronic music, and again i understand why they wouldn't. even hip-hop djs should be given respect, cuz it does take skill after all to match pitches on songs without a constant drum line, and to have it cued up right. and scratching properly takes forever to master. if you're good you might even be able to throw it into a breaks set or even possible a trance set if done tastefully...

so don't diss the DJs. diss the dumbasses that come up and tell you to play a completely different genre during aset. everybody has a different taste in music, and that should be respected, and they should in turn respect that we're not into their music and don't have those records in our crate. who cares if that one retard thinks you suck, all you need to do is look at the dancefloor and all your deepest wishes (you know the ones you had when you started djing) will come to life to when you see everyone dancing, screaming and having an overall blast.

Posted by Dj Thy on Nov-03-2003 10:21:

I always find funny when someone comes up and asks for a tune, the moment that tune is playing... When I tell them that the tune actually playing is the one they asked for, you can't imagine what sorts of excuses they come up with not to look like a dumb twat.

Posted by Breeze on Nov-05-2003 16:45:

i always get ask to played hard house all the time. thats about it coz hip hop djs play before me.
