Sennheiser headphones
I just spent 60 punds on a new set of sennheiser hd495 silver headphones and they suck! They are so light and flimsy and the sound quality isnt even that good! So im gonna get a refund, but which headphones do y'all recommend for 60 bucks (Uk cash)?
I was told the ministry of sound ones are alright, but theres two kinds, silver ones and dark grey ones, diffrence? I really always stumble when it comes to head cans!

Get the sony mdr-v500, they sell for about 50 bucks (uk) and their sound is very decent.
This seems kind of strange to me.. The 495's are very good quality headphones for the money. Well, since this is the DJ forum I will assume that you are buying headphones for mixing. That being the case then the 495's won't do you too much good as they are open headphones and will leak in lots of sound from your speakers. Mixing is still certainly possible with open headphones, but may prove to be more difficult, especially in a noisy environment.
Your choices for around around 60 pounds are kind of limited though..
It would probably be very beneficial to save up a bit more and drop 90-100 pounds on some really solid headphones.
Alot of people recommend sony headphones but I would say to stay away from them if you can. You'll get better quality from some other offerings for the money. A suitable and economical set of headphones for mixing at home would be the Sennheiser 25SP. Other good buys would be the AKG 240's as mentioned by igottaknow. And lastly the beyerdynamic DT 770.
Also sennheiser recently released a new closed headphone, the HD-280
pro. I haven't used or seen any of these personally, and also have no idea how much they sell for. I am guessing that they are well out of your price range but probably around top of the line. (150pounds) Along with the Sennheiser 25's and the Beyerdynamic DT 831's. Also very nice is the IXOS DJ 1001's are very nice and worth mentioning on the high end.
Anyone have any first hand experience with the HD-280's?
I got Sony MDR v700's and my god there quality headphones. I had no problems with them yet. They cost about 120 bux (US dollars) but well worth it.
Ya man I got Sony MDR-700's as well. I've never been more satisfied with a purchase. They have crystal clear sound even at very high volume. Im using them right now as I type.
Yep i got a pair of Seinnhesiser HP-85's and compaired to the Sonys V-700's there nowt, so much clarity in them, and its like wairing 1000 worth of speakers next to ya ears. Every Trance DJ ive seen wears them so u they cant be wrong huh!!
PS Nice name Transa, great minds think alike :P
He he,thanks man.Im just wonderin, how do i get a pic like all u guys have under your name?
you do have a pick buddy.
its tiesto flapping his arms like a bird =)
i heard from some people that the sony mdr's have too much bass. that its kinda amped so its harder to distinquish real beats.
i just bought the technics RPDJ-1200a or something. they are amazing. earpieces are not as big as the sony's, but they are soft and cushy and dround out allot of the sound. when i tried the sonys on they were kinda stiff and strong.. i felt like if i left them on they would numb my ears.
the rpdjs go for 200 us. but i got them for 110 at electronicscity.com.. great buy.
*Rolls on the ground for five minutes laughing at everyone's sucky headphones*
Okay, you all are GOOD, you hear that, GOOD..hehe....oh, man, people thinking that sooo many pieces of crap sound good, and sooooo many good things sound bad....
Oh, okay, okay...
We'll take these as a given....
An audiophile want's completely accurate, open sound with a wide soundstage, that is nonetheless detailed and (maybe even) up-front. They probably want the speakers or headphones to NOT add their own color to the mix, just to reproduce what is already recorded.
Someone who is listening to trance probably wants a LOT of midbass; one of the biggest draws of trance is that 80 to 100 hz midbass THUMP THUMP THUMP, which can make your brain produce some happy chemicals.
Someone who is mixing trance, Ideally, wants to please both the people at the club, who might not be mentally able to criticize "the sound" of anything, and even the audiophile listening to his mix in the comfort of his own home, with his accurate headphones and/or speakers.
Given those, I am REALLY surprised at the headphones you all are talking about!!
Okay, someone said that they didn't like the Sennheiser HD495's. That was REALLY surprising. Those would SUCK to mix with, but they are some of the better audiophile headphones out there. However, they don't have exaggerated bass (which you all want/need), and may even need to be connected to an amp to sound loud enough. However, while they are GREAT audiophile headphones, those are BAD headphones with which to mix trance. DON'T, however, claim that they suck; they DON'T. Try playing some classical through them, from a big cd player with a strong headphone jack.
Heh. You all like the IXOS Ministry of Sound headphones and the Sony MDR-V700DJ's...
*falls over laughing*
Egad, you really DON'T know anything about headphones, do you? Well, for ONE thing, even if the IXOS ones are good (they sound okay, but the price/performance ratio isn't that great), the ENTIRE Sony MDR-V###DJ series SUCKS!!
Do you want to know why? Even if you LIKE huge, bloated midbass, you get that with no mids, screechy highs, and no detail across the spectrum! And plus, if you want big, bassy closed headphones, you only have to spend 1/5th as much! Buy the Koss UR-20's, which sound better than the ENTIRE MDR-VCRAPDJ SERIES, and cost $25!! And, you know what, the VCRAPDJ series, NONE of their headphones gives you true bass! they give you crappy midbass, but, despite sony's claims that they go to 5 hz, 50 hz is more like it! Those headphones don't even go NEAR the bottom of the human hearing range (which is 20 hz), so you can't get any true bass with those, no matter how loud you turn it up. you can with the Koss UR-20's and the UR-30's, however.
Okay, okay, you ask, "Well, if those suck, than what's better for mixing trance?" I'll tell you. For mixing trance, I would think that you would need some easy to drive closed headphones that are fairly accurate, but exaggerated in the bass, for beat matching. There is one set of headphones that does this, and EVERY recording studio that knows JACK uses it. It is the one set of headphones that, if you record something with this, chances are, it will sound GREAT with anything. It is accurate, except for some slight exaggeration at the lower end (ie, if you play a 60 decibel tone, and a sweep from 150 hz to 20 hz, through the v6's, it will remain the same loudness the lower you go, where, with a normal set of headphones, it would get quieter and quieter the closer you get to the bottom range of human hearing). Do you know what these headphones are? They are the Sony MDR-V6. They are not the Sony MDR-V600DJ's. The "professional" version of these phones (with a better paint job) is the sony MDR-7506. Those are not the Sony MDR-7509's, which are the crappy Sony MDR-V900DJ's with a better paint job. Remember, if you WANT good headphones to mix with, get the Sony MDR-V6 or the Sony MDR-7506!!
Oh, and sennheiser headphones? Sennheiser makes two headphones that would be great for dj'ing. Both are closed. There is the Sennheiser HD25SP, which has slightly boomy bass but otherwise accurate sound, and the audiophile-quality (ie, no exaggeration, and no boomy bass) HD25.
Gluegun out.
Gluegun, THANK YOU ! I've been wanting to write a rant like that for quite some time now but I always opted out, considering how much I yell at people as it is ...
If I had to, I would sell several of my organs to get a pair of Senneheiser HD-25 ... good thing that I already have them. Best headphone I ever used ... EVER, and trust me I tried A LOT of so-called "DJ" headphones.
Hmm.
for 60 bucks im sure they sound poor, dood i just purchased a pair of Sennheiser HD200s @$189NZ and they sound way better than the sony MDRV500DJ @$179NZ, the only thing i can recommend if you dont want to spend the money, just go to an audio store who sell a range of headphones and have a good listen, its the only way to do it, but im sure you will come up with the conclusion that the more you pay the better the head phone you will get, and that a cheep sony will sound like crap and cheep sennheisers will also sound like crap.
Im actually wondering if i should go back and up grade to the Senheiser HD270s for $300NZ, they sounded smoother any sugestions, dont know weather i should spend the extra $100nz, but they did sound good and i need them for recording editing.....please help should i upgrade to the HD270s, anybody got them?

NZWaverider, you haven't heard a DAMN THING I SAID, HAVE YOU?
Dude, return your headphones!
Remember, a brand name means JACK SH!T in headphones!!
Just, sell all of the ones you have and buy a set of MDR-V6's.
Here, this is a good place to buy them cheap (oh, wait, you're in New Zealand, aren't you? Sucks to be you. It's tough as HELL to get good cans there...):
http://www.djmart.com/noname5.html
TRUST ME, you HAVE NOT YET HEARD GOOD SOUNDING HEADPHONES.
Okay, here's the headphones you should consider:
Koss UR-20 (uber cheap! get these instead of the Sony/IXOS crap, because they sound better at 1/5th the price!)
Koss UR-30 (if you need a UR-20 that folds, get this!)
Sony MDR-V6 (This is your ultimate mixing headphone!)
Sony MDR-7506 (This is your ultimate mixing headphone with a better paint job!)
Sennheiser HD25SP (This is great, but has slightly boomy bass)
Sennheiser HD25 (This is an audiophile-quality closed headphone)
Beyerdynamic DT250-80 (also an audiophile-quality closed headphone)

And, dude, THOSE are your options...
The sony MDR-V500DJ and the Sennheiser HD200's are NOT ON THIS LIST, BECAUSE THEY SUCK!!
I use the Sony MDR-V700DJ just like Tiesto =)
Right now I'm using Sony MDR-7505 sound quality is great, much better than my Sennheiser HD25s
You can get the MDR-7505 from www.pssl.com for about $100.00 US
Oh, god, this forum is GREAT! *everyone* uses sucky headphones! LOL!

Oh, man, you all are a hoot! "Every Trance DJ ive seen wears them so u they cant be wrong huh!!"
*Falls over laughing* You all are CASTRATING yourselves by using headphoens that don't have any bass!! Heheh! NOTHING in that ENTIRE series goes below 50 hz!! Heheh....oh, man, this place is a hoot!
I know about the 80 limit and phone for Dj but what about MDR-1700 and 3000? They are closed phones too but cost a lot more!
I know a lot of DJ's buy the V700DJ, but I think most people will admit that the reason they bought them was because of the styling. Sound-wise, they don't have one redeeming quality; the midbass (read that carefully: midbass) is very boomy, mids and highs are recessed, and the real bass, low bass (and the upper treble for that matter) is basically nonexistent. But you think they have tons of "awesome" bass due to the boominess in the low midrange. But trust me, the sony V700DJ (and the entire DJ line) is useless. In fact, the only Sony headphone I would reccomend to DJ's is the Sony MDR-V6. You have not experienced low bass, bass that puts some really great subs to shame, until you've listened to the V6. A lot of people feel that no other headphone in the world extends as low as the V6. And what's even better is that for most people (depending on the fit of the headphones on your ears) feel that the bass is very precise. The V6 also has a rather flat frequency response all the way across the frequency spectrum for the most part as well. I do NOT mean the V600! The V600, if it's possible, is even worse than the V700. Don't waste your time with it.
Oh, and one more thing about the V6 is that it's built like a tank. it can take all sorts of abuse, whereas most people complain about the V700 breaking rather fast (I've heard people talk about the plastic cracking due to faults in the design, for instance).
The V6's are meant for recording and monitoring, but for music I don't like them much. They have little to no soundstage (so they definitely sound closed) and they tend to sound analytical due to the fact that they bring out all the faults in a recording. For music, I wholeheartedly reccomend the Grado SR80 for $95 US. These headphones are very hard to find outside the US however, so they may be hard to get for that price. If you can't find grados, the Sennheiser HD495 (espeically with a good amp) sounds very good with most types of music. However senns have built a reputation as classical headphones, so they're rather laid back and not as suitable for rock or techno. If you want more impact and excitement, the V6 would probably be your best choice despite it's musical shortcomings. I've also heard good things about the beyerdynamic DT-231, but I haven't heard this headphone so I can't comment on it. Another possibility that I have yet to try is the sennheiser EH2270.
Oh, by the way, those are my cheap reccomendations. If you're willing to spend more, we (gluegun, raymondlin, myself, or anyone else from the www.head-fi.org forum) can tell you what to get. Trust me, we'll know.
well...I guess that's it.
Okay, lets talk about reccomendations for LISTENING to trance, and recommendations for CREATING trance...
If you want the ultimate headphones for creating that club atmosphere and enjoying some great trance at your own home, than there's really only one set of headphones for you: The Grado SR-325's. Those block out NO sound, so they would SUCK for MIXING trance, but for listening to it in a quiet environment, there's nothing better. Another good headphone for listening to trance, a set of can's that like the Sony MDR-V6, but not as analytical and is more musical, and that blocks out about half as much sound than the MDR-V6's is the Denon AHD-950's. Those are great for listening to trance... However, like I said, there's really only one perfect set of cans for mixing trance, and those are the Sony MDR-V6's. If you wanted to mix with a "better" set of cans, you would have to lose, say, that slight bass exaggeration that makes beat matching easier (ie, by getting the Sennheiser HD25's or the Sony MDR-CD1700's or the Sony MDR-CD3000's or the Beyerdynamic DT-831's), or, you would have to lose some of the V6's extreme bass extension (Ie, by getting the Beyerdynamic DT250-80's or the Sennheiser HD25SP), or you would have to lose the ease of which the MDR-V6's are driven (IE, by getting the Sennheiser HD250 II's, or the Beyerdynamic DT-831's), or, you would have to lose some of the isolation that the V6's give (by getting the Beyerdynamic DT231's, or the Denon AHD-750, or the Denon AHD-950's, or even a set of Grado cans [in which case you would lose ALL isolation]).
You see? The V6's are best for mixing, better than even many "better" cans, because you don't have to sacrifice anything to make a good mix. And, of COURSE, they are better than any of the crap headphones you all seem to enjoy. :P
Hello. F**k those Sony MDR-V***DJ's!
Hello.
I use the Sony MDR-V6 [
] and MDR-7506 [
] , they're WAY better than the MDR-V700DJ [
]!
*slaps himself in the face* ALL RIGHT! I'LL GO BUY MYSELF A F**KING PAIR OF PIECE OF CRAP SONY MDR-V700DJ HEADPHONES!!!
*slaps himself a second time* You son-of-a-@#$%&!!!!!!!!

You can quote all the Technical specification you want Gluegun, but when it come down to Djing, for me the MDR-7505s sound better than my Sennheiser HD25s. It all boils down to personal taste and what works best for each individual.
Mixing and making music is not alway about the best most flash gear, it's what you feel comfortable with.
Shit Fatboy Slim uses Stanton's! I think most people would agree that those are crap headphones
cheeba cheeba ya'll
Wether it be in a club or creating stuff in a studio, if your doing your mix through a pair of shitty headphones, chances are you are NOT getting an accurate presentaion of what is actually going on through your equipment. In return, your mix will most likely sound like ass (or at least not as good as it could be) as you most likely would have (if your a good dj) fiddled with the eqs trying to make the shit sound good, thus totally fucking up the end product as it will sound completely different off another source then it did in your headphones.
For instance, If you've got someone scratching over an lp with scratches already recorded onto it (say a gangstarr record, cause dj premier is fucking awesome), it is usually very easy to distinguish the scratches made by the dj and the scratches made by the artists dj. Its not too hard to mix the scratches made by the one dj onto the ones already on the other, making it sound much nicer, but many times this doesn't happen because either A) the dj doesn't care or B) it sounded good on their shitty ass phones, but not on anything else.
As the case is, I don't find the dj line or most any other sony headphone (excluding the V6s) suitable for home listening or for studio or dj use. If you like listening to your music through your 700s, fine, thats your thing, but Sony calling those things studio moniter or any dj claiming they're good dj headphones is in all aspects, a fucking joke.
The only headphones I would ever trust (bear in mind I have not heard the senns) while mixing are the v6/7509s and a couple of AKG's closed phones. The AKGs are defintly more suited for the studio, leaving the V6 as probably the ONLY headphone I would ever use as a dj moniter outside of a home or studio setting.
Peace.
heheheheheheh... Good one, massappeal85!!!
My friend once tried mixing with those V700DJ's, and I listened to his mixes...
Craptastic!!! His mix ended up sounding way too bright through my "budget-audiophile" Grado SR-60's!!! I mean, there's hardly any bass at all in his mix, and tinny, scratching, etchy, glassy (in an unpleasant way) highs! (And yep, his crappy mixes sound way too bright with absolutely no bass at all whatsoever even through my Sony MDR-7506's and MDR-CD1700's, too!) What a piece of crap his mixes really are!!
