Question possibly starting to dj with cds???

i dunno, recently it just hit me that i wanted to start dj-ing. for now, nothing serious, but just as a fun hobby to pick up while at school. of course, everyone seems to start out with vinyls, but i find that being at school i can get my hands on so many mp3s and rip them to cd that would be almost impossible to find on vinyl. being so, i wanna look for a nice cd player to start out with. i dont wanna spend too much, but at the same time i dont want something shitty either...just something good for a serious beginner to play with. i've been searching around and i saw a Numark CD Mix-1, which is like a dual cd player and mixer integrated into one. do u guys think this something good to start with, or do u recommend something else? any suggestions are appreciated...i'm on the thin line between buying and not buying, so please help!!!!!!

thanks!!!!

How much $$$ are you willing to spend???

Posted by Max2LC on Jul-27-2001 02:39:

Idea Uhm...

See dude.
CD's are good !!! I like em...cheap, small.......
Vynil are cool...and FOR SOME FUCKING REASON VYNIL DJ'S THINK THEY ARE THE SHIT...
WELL SUCK MY DICK ALL YOU TURNTABILISTS WHO THINK THAT WAY...BET YOU I CAN FIND A BEAT FASTER THAN U SPIN YOUR TURNTABLE UP !!!

now..
the best CD Players AT THIS MOMMENT
are the new CDJ-1000
they are exactly like turntable....
but they cost muuuuuuuch more
i spin on CDJ 100's..and i like em...

Posted by DJ Darchinova on Jul-27-2001 08:14:

yeah!!
the CDJ-1000's are sooooooooooooooooooo good!!!!!!!
my friend at my local DJ store just got them in and they sound EXACTLY like VINYL!!!!
the best ever! the most amazing sound.. i couldnt belive it..

these things are up to US$1000 though.. hehe.. guess that why they are called the 1000's..

this is gonna be future technology.. and within 2-3 years all CD players will have vinyl-like sounds.. maybe even in a decade..- no more vinyl?

Posted by GooKPryD on Jul-27-2001 14:32:

hahahah i'd like to spend $1000 if i had it. but i mean, i wanna spend somewhere like around $500 just cuz im startin out. u think this is being too tite on the wallet? what cd players are decent for around this price range u think? thanx yall

Posted by DJ Darchinova on Jul-27-2001 15:35:

do you mean $500 for 2 cd players??
well the Gemini CDJ-20's are good..
check them out:
http://www.hollywooddj.com/geminicd20new.html

$250 each

Posted by Max2LC on Jul-27-2001 15:41:

HEHE

$500...I dunno man...deffinetly not Pioneer, but don't worry, there are other shit that soudnds very good and will be an awesome start for you...
BY THe way...about CDJ 1000s...I wanted to buy them...not cause I have the money...I don't...LOL but then I changed my mind, although they are exactly like a turntable..have backspins, scratching.......they don't have the effects I have on my CDJ 100's..the JET, WAH, and ZIP effect..I know there are effect machines that do it, but I like it more when they are on the CD Player it self.

Posted by GooKPryD on Jul-27-2001 15:56:

hahahha i really wanna spend a lot and go all out, but i guess i can only make do with what i can cuz im really anxious to get one soon. oh yeah, my first post, i said something about the Numark CD Mix 1. do u guys think this is a good start since it has a combination of cd players and a mixer? here's a link to some specs just in case u dunno what im talkin about. thanx for the feedback peeps!

http://thecamerapro.com/numarkcdmix1.html

Posted by dazzed on Jul-27-2001 18:40:

yah the new 1000's are amazing. but they are like 1000-1200 a PIECE NOT A PAIR.

i'd say look into a decient pair that you think would hold their value. so that way when the 1000's go down (in a few years) you can sell your pair off and have a little cash towards them. that or u can get a cheap pair and not blow your loot yet - but i dont think you wanna deal with bad cd players.

And dude don't go bitchin out vinyll dj's. im one of them. i gotta say when you do have a record store by you, its nice as hell to go there, hang out, talk to the people, pick up some random records and just listen to them. Im sure its easier to burn a cd, and have it playin in 10min. damn cheaper too. but i personally.. i dunno like when im doin a set i like lookin through my records thinking about which ti play next, it gives me a much more solid feeling about my music. I do think you get a crisper sound as well (for certain songs).

also i dunno while on the subject, don't you guys think its a little crazy how many different formats there are? you got dat players, mp3 players, record players, cd players, mini disk players...
i was talking to some people at the record store about this.. its gettin kinda nuts to be ontop of all of this stuff.

anyway... good luck in your search for equipment. it's a great hobby. just be careful if u get cd players don't go burning every song u hear on cd. cuz you will never be able to keep track of them!! thats another cool thing about records. they cost money so your forced to pick wisely, and u dont get em as fast as u would mp3s so you learn to work with each record really well.

The CD mix1 is not a good device... the mixer doesn't have any Eq'.
For 500$ get the Numark CDN-34, it's the best cd player in that price... it's great!
If you don't like it than get a Denon DN-1800f... it sells for about 550$ and is a very good cd player.
Don't bother with the Gemini stuff... it's not worth the money.

Posted by Izzy on Jul-27-2001 22:27:

i'd recommend AGIANST anything gemini and that numark mixer set you were talking about.
if you're tight on money check out the numark cdn 23s http://www.123dj.com/cd/numark/cdn23s.html i personally have the 24s and i havent found anything to complain about... its nice to get dual cd cause then you can get a 19 inch mixer and mount everything on a rack.

Posted by GooKPryD on Jul-30-2001 14:09:

yeah at first i was thinkin about either gettin the numark 20s or the 30s dual cd players, but then i was thinkin "hey, this cd mix-1 has a built in mixer so that could save some money". well if that mixer is shitty, then i'd rather get the dual player and the mixer separately. what are some decent mixers to start out with? does numark make good ones? damn i sound so dj-illiterate...then again, i am!!!!!

Posted by DJ Darchinova on Jul-30-2001 15:37:

Hi guys..

I am taking no sides, but can you tell me what is wrong with Gemini equipment? They seem nice for a good price!

Anyway,
CD players are also a good way to listen to your mixes on CD when recorded to PC and burnt

I STRONGLY SUGGEST a pair of pioneer cdj100 and a decent mixer (pioneer djm300,stanton rm100 mixer). That stanton rm100 offers all the features you'll ever need for an extremely low price).
The pioneer djm300 doesn't have the headphones cue fader which it very critical at times but other than that it's a very good mixer.

the pioneer cdj100 is a very good cd player, used in alot of clubs, well, very dependable decks. It's well respected by the industry and if you every want to sell it, you'll have an easy time selling it.

Let's say a pair of new cdj100 cost you 700 us dollars.
and let's say dj'ing is not for you and you decide you want to sell them, you can easily get 500 us dollars for both.

on the other hand, let's say you get that numark cd/mixer all in one thingy for what like 600 us dollars and you decide you want to sell it. Guess what, NOBODY WILL BUY IT FROM YOU. Your down 600 bucks, why? because it's a cheap, junky piece of junk.

Posted by Izzy on Jul-30-2001 18:03:

GookPryD, i have the stanton rm-100 mixer that dj versus mentioned... i think it hasnt dissapointed me at all... i found it on 123dj.com for 300$ then get one of the numarks dual 20's or 30's... if you find a 24s (i dont know if they're still produced) it has that fader start compadibility with the stanton mixer and thats fun to play with... but then again the 30's might too (i dont really know) and they also have those seamless loops which the 20's dont... its all on how much you wanna spend.

a pointer is if you purchase those things from one interent source then haggle! they usualy come to an arragement with you... go to different sites and see whats the best deal they'll give you... after all you are spending quite a bit of cash.

Posted by dj alonzo on Jul-30-2001 18:04:

Yeah, you got a good point here... but he won't have a hard time selling a Denon DN-1800F or a Numark CDN-34. they're both quality stuff.
Now for a mixer... check out the Stanton RM-100, it really is a very good mixer for a very resonable price (about 300$)
Also check out the Behringer DX-500, a great mixer for a very cheap price (about 200$).

thanx a lot guys for all the input. hopefully by the end of august i'll have something to play with now that i have an idea of what i should go out and get. im gonna go around the internet and shop, and hey, ebay isnt such a bad idea either cuz they got stuff up there for cheap as well. again thanx a shitload!!!

Smiley DJ

When I started DJ-ing I bought CD players because I was in the same situation as you GooKPryD, but after three months I spined in two turntables and I was amazed. Turntables are much more cool than the cd players. Now I bought my turntables and I leaved cd players. sometimes I use CD players but they are not compared with the turntables. Turntables are the best for djin, Why do you think that all the best djs of the world use turntables???
it's difficult to find vinyl, but, i dont know why, this make better because when you get the vinyl you want you play it more, and you feel that you cant stop playing you vinyls.
so if you are starting i recomend to buy turntables.

Posted by patticus on Jul-30-2001 22:11:

yeah you all forgot one little thing, no B-SIDES!!!!
so what are all you cd djs going to do, find out big huge tracks from pvd, armin and jules radio shows and quickly burn them to cd and then spin those tracks?

well GOOD FOR YOU. we'll see how far you get copying your favorite djs instead of developing your own sound and spinning less-known, relatively "underground" tracks. MANY of which are hidden away on vinyl b-sides and are only played by a lucky, studious few.

so that's the main thing i think. vinyl djs may have to wait longer for new "hot" releases, but we have many more options to choose from... its not like you can find old classics from the early 90s on mp3 format anyways right? if its sold out on vinyl, the chances of you finding it "unmixed" on cd/mp3 are very small too..

my two cents.

Posted by dazzed on Jul-30-2001 22:23:

i spin records as well.

my opinion is.. yah it's really irritating when you hear an amazing song. and you can't find it on record.

but the ups of vinyll. you only get a few good records at a time. so you have time to master the record and know it well. I think personally if i became a cd-dj. within a matter of weeks i would have a 100 cd book filled with cool songs i heard here and there. and when it comes time to perform i wouldn't know what to play. looking at the record kinda brings back the memory of the music to me.

and the other great thing about buying a single record, is you usually get remixes!! not always big remixes that people know, but say your playing a set with some nice thumping base, almost a housy set - everyones into it. you wanna play a song, but its really trancy and the beat drops out.. so you throw on side B and keep the beat going.

Read This! I agree....

I completely agree with peeps from above
i also started with CD's cause I havelots of them
and I didnt have money for tables and records
I wanted to start fast so I can start practicing and training my ear
so I bought 2 American DJ CD Pro DJ 1
the cheapest decks that i could have found around my place
and they are serving me well for practising purposes
however I would like CDJ 100 or some other more reliable decks with better start time and seamless loop which i could take to gigs when I get some
but I have no money
and yes problem is that I have lot of them , and its a problem to become intimate with the songs when you can get so many of them at one time, unlike vinyl

Thumbs up Numark cd mix 1

hello GooKPryD, i think that you will make a great choice if you will buy the numark mixer, i think this mixer is the best for a beginner, its compact and its cheap and the quallety is ok.
in my opinion you should by it, if you will decide to go ferther with your hobby and become a pro then you should get your self a set of turntabels or good dual cd players.

cheers

I've been checking into the Pioneer CDJ1000's, and I've got a question. On all of the webpages that I've looked at which describe the features, all of them hint at this, but never come out and say it..

Does the jog dial actually spin on its own??

here's an example of the quotes I've been finding..
"This thing is pure heaven. Using the Vinyl/CDJ selector switch you can use the plate either as the normal CDJ jog wheel, or as a digitally replicated vinyl platter!"

on http://www.12am.com.au/djtoys/cdj1000.html

Thanks in advance!
DJ Adam Smith

Posted by dj alonzo on Aug-08-2001 18:26:

DJAdamSmith, no, it doesn't spin... but i've heard that maybe the CDJ-1000 mark 2 will have that feature.
