Thumbs up sasha at avalon aftermath!

all i have to say is... WOW. 7.5+ hours of sasha! no live digweed telecast but no matter. sasha owned avalon. i have to give avalon props for this one...

it was amazing just WATCHING sasha work the decks while i was in the balcony. he does quite a lot of deck manipulation, sometimes good sometimes bad. but dammit, that was one awesome new year's eve!

tracks that owned me

dave gahan - dirty stick floors (junkie xl dub)
sasha vs underworld - wavy gravy vs born slippy

and as his finale...
sasha vs underworld - cowgirl vs xpander

Sasha was great. I loved he loops he did with that "Fucking Electricity" (or whatever it is) track. Everything else was IMO not so great.

The line was longer than the one on opening night - it went past the Periyali restaurant when I got there at 9:30 pm, and may have stretched to 5th Ave later! And this was for people with tickets! (a bouncer said that no one without tix would get in before 2 am, but when I arrived inside, there were people paying at the cashier - $100 each) Thankfully, I finally got in at 11:15 pm. They probably slowed the line before 11 pm, so that not too many free drinks would be given. I feel sorry for those who didn't make it in by midnight.

The line for coat check was utter chaos as well. I waited a little bit after coming in, but then decided to come back after midnight. So I did, and still waited at least half an hour.
I thought it would help to wait til closing, but that took 20 minutes. On both trips to the coat check, there was that angry guy who kept on yelling at people to move back. The ppl working there worked the whole time, and didn't look like happy campers. I hope they got tipped well.

Seemed like there were many non-clubbers in the crowd, some of whom were at Avalon for the first time, some of whom didn't know who the DJ's were. I experienced a good amount of rudeness.
There was also mad making out, but I'm not complaining about that. But I digress...
I didn't feel like I had freedom of movement throughout the club until at least 5 am. However, the floor was still full when Sasha finished at 7:30 am.

These places need to have food! Even on regular nights, especially on special nights like these. Even snacks would do, like they have at Arc. I had a big dinner beforehand, but was dying near the end. I had to rely on candy from the bathroom attendant.

And what happened to the supposed video broadcast of Digweed in LA??

I tried going to this after-party at Lotus afterwards, since it seemed cheap (and interesting, to me), but the doors were closed when I got there at around 8:15 am. I was thinking about Arc, but I thought it would be too much to pay for the amount of time I'd be there. And I've seen Sander play for 5 hours before.
I'll see if I can make it to Exit some time on New Years Day (or night thereof). But there might first be some family stuff to do.

true too many rude rude people. too many women that think they're all that obviously don't know how to say excuse me while trying to go thru the club. i was soooo glad when people started leaving at around 3 am. it left some room up at the balcony and on the dance floor. a lot of the people dancing didn't seem to be aware of their surroundings. one of my friends got elbowed in the face pretty hard because of someone dancing by jumping up and down. but man, the music! that's all i came for... THAT was an experience.

Sorry for going a little off-topic...

So I went to Exit for the end of Jonathan Peters' supposed 30-hour set, after doing some stuff with my brother.
I get there at 7:15 pm, pay $60 for admission (making my NYE very expensive, but I figure I'll try it this once), and $5 for coat check, expecting to get at least 6.5 good hours. JP ends up stopping at 9 pm!
He said something about having hurt his back, and will make it up at his birthday party.
I also had to wait half an hour to pick up my coat from coat check.

sorry to be a dick, but you fully deserved that...JP can goto hell

after reading these reviews, it looks like those who chose Sander @ Arc made the better decision, even if the 12-hour set was a lie

Let me first say that I dont regret at all going to see this show NYE. It was my first time seeing Sasha live and he was truly amazing. The club was beautiful whether it was packed or not didnt bother me much.

But, IMO, Sasha played nothing like I expected as far as tracks go. Maybe I am talking out of my ass, but he's been playing most of those for a few months now, at least since August. I was defintiely not expecting to recognize so many, and to tell the truth I was surprised. I guess I expected more unknowns than crowd pleasers, but then again it was new years and everything.

Also, was it just me, or was he using the same bridge between all his mixes towards the end of the night? Something that sounded a bit like Tom Mangan's Backwards Retro? If he was I guess i can't blame him. I'd be a bit weary after a few hours let alone 8.

Some tracks that were memorable for me (even if I've heard them or have them myself)

Dirty Bass - Emotional landscape
Holden - Break in the Clouds
RND - Ripples (love the loop he did on the breakdown)
Air Drawn Slippy

Also, I thought JVM played a great set. I love breaks.

Rueben dont you dare try to make assumptions about which party was better.

Sasha @ Avalon was THE place to be....We showed up at around 11:30, and thankfully a friend was working the door and she ushered our entorage in --- that line was ridiculous!!

I had one of the most monumental evenings of my life! The beats he spun were, track after track, utterly amazing. I spent time going back and forth from Spider Club, which since the place was so packed on the main dance floor. Spider had a lot of room to dance (they patched Sasha into Spider as well) and a private bathroom and private bar and it was nice to relax a bit in there at moments...so so so sososossosos many awesome people were in attendance! I met some really profound people from all over the world....The crowd in Spider Room was superb...and i met some cool people downstairs too---it was great to share such a good night with them...and the hottie i met on the dance floor and danced the rest of the night with---uhhhh that was the best!

His encore with Xpander was ridiculous. He rang in the new year with wavy gravy vs. br slippy---I mean, it was nuts!!! He spun many many trax that are on his essential mix.

Yes, the place was way overcrowded at first...thank god for Spider Club as well or im not sure if the night would have been as amazing for me. Aaron and Arin (I dont know how to spell your name!) it was great to see you as well! And damn people, Aaron (stringfelowhawk) is one fucking amazing dancer and I give him big props---I wish I could move like that.

It was a night consumed with debauchery, some great dancing, some making out, and a lot of indulgence --- this was definitely my favorite NYE ever. Just wish he could have spun longer....something obviously happened at the end there---either a power failure or the club was told to shut down...I imagine they were told to shut down since I saw some firemen in there ... whatever, 8 hours was enough for me.

sasha was great fun nye. great tracks, great mixing. although i have to say, i was surprised to have recognized so many of the songs. very commercial. and yeah towards the end, he did seem to use all the same bridge. too many cranberry vodkas i guess.

i agree with wallflower. these clubs should definitely have food! i was starving by 6 and ended up incapacitated by the balcony because of it!

as for the crowd, everyone was very friendly and those who were shoving and pushing, blame the club's policy for the rudeness. they're the ones enstating a dress code and retarded door policy. but sasha's set was worth it

Posted by trunks1022 on Jan-02-2004 17:44:

by the end sasha was using his cd stuff to spin instead of the vinyl. either he was tired or lazy, and thus he used a lot of loops thru his pioneer. oh yeah, someone in the booth, while looking thru his stack of vinyls, knocked over a bottle of water in the shelf that housed his vinyls. sasha didn't look too pleased as he had to remove a whole stack from the shelf and had to wipe down everything. that might've explained his going to cds at the end too

The only dress code was supposedly "no sneakers", but I didn't see that be enforced, i.e. anyone being turned away because of that.

The rudeness probably had more to do with Avalon's popularity (some of which has to do with its history), and that it was cheaper than most other NYE events in the city. Arc is not promoted as heavily, and is known for usually not having alcohol - it seemed that mainly just people on the boards would know about Arc having booze on this night. Also, probably more people know about, or have heard of, Sasha than Sander.

Posted by EV Junkie on Jan-02-2004 19:19:

I didnt encounter one single rude person. The bouncers were a bit edgy at the end of the night, but they managed to maintain a decent level of consideration...I mean, they went through a very serious night---they were responsible for controlling chaos---

As for the attendees, I never once encountered anyone rude---the place was filled with fun cool people...such a better crowd than most trance events, sadly. im sure Ill get shit for that statement, but its really how i feel nowadays...now that im getting into people like Nick Warren, Lawler, Sasha---it seems like their crowds are just so much better....more mature---at trance events it can get pretty silly. ya know?

So this review is a little late, but give me a break I'm in the Virgin Islands for vacation .

Went to Rachel's party and met some TA's. Took off kind of early to get in line for Sasha. I thought that ID's were going to be a HUGE problem but the bouncer barely even glanced at mine. I was then informed that only people that had bought tickets in advance were going to be allowed in, so my friend passed her ticket back to me; and what do you know once I got inside I could still buy tickets at the door! Stupid Avalon bouncers. Anyway after that the night was truly legendary! Ya it was crowded but what do you expect? Avalon is a top notch club on the #1 party night of the year. Sound, lights, and everything were on point.

After the ball drop Sasha really started getting into it. I had a blast dancing with Paul, his girlfriend (sorry forgot the name), Trunks1022, Christina (#1 party girl!), Mark, Helen, Mindy, Jaime, W., Jass (awesome dude with a mohawk), etc. After about 3 the floor opened up and there was room to really move. I loved groving to Dirty Sticky Floor, and that other song from Sasha's Cremefield Mix with "emotions" in the vocals. I agree that he did play a lot of songs that I already knew, but I personally like it when DJ's do that. It definitely wasn't more than 1/2 of the songs though, so it was a good balance. I SOOOO mad that I missed X-pander Cowgirl mix. I had to leave @ 6 to catch a plane >:0.

Hands down BEST NIGHT of 2003/2004!!!! I had a blast partying with everyone. Hopefully the next good party will be 18+ so all TA's can come out.

Got to tell you...flew in from Atlanta for Sasha @ Avalon..a huge dissapointment. The space was very nicely decorated and layed out properly...but the club was completely oversold and uncomfortable to meneuver in. The crowd was guido filled, and snobby. The soundsytem was lacking volume in my honest opinion..considering the amount of EAW speakers it had inside (maybe not tuned properly?) My wife was uncomfortable with the unisex bathrooms in Avalon (the guido guys with their muscle shirts hitting on her didn't help :whip We had spent $590 dollars on a table and a bottle of Grey Goose for 3 of us...and the VIP area was oversold as well. (truly a disaster waiting to happen as far as fire codes go). We ended up leaving the club at about 3:00am completly dissapointed and decided to head over to ARC for Sander.

This is where our night began to turn for the better. Very nice space..great people..a strong vibe..and amazing music. The PHAZON soundsystem was unreal...it seemed that every square inch of the club was covered and sounded amazing (crisp highs and thumping basslines).
Sander layed it down PROPER and I found a new found respect for Klienburg. I had seen him years ago in Atl..and was left unimpressed. But on NYE..he dropped some of the most amazing tracks I have ever heard. He kept the crowd mooving...and just when I wanted to take a break from dancing..another amazing floor stomping track was seemlessly mixed. Does anyone have a track list?

We stayed until 9am and then left for some sleep. Overall a great night..and I will def return to Arc again in the near future. As for Avalon?? umm...NEXT!

well, with your newfound respect for Sander, you may want to also find out how to spell his name correctly

jokes aside, im sorry you had a bad night...what VIP room were you in? Spider Room was the place to be...hands down I think everyone who was uncomfortable would have really enjoyed themselves more had they been able to retreat to Spider when things got too loco in the main rooms...

We chose the stage..which got VERY crowded by about 1am. We had drunk chicks who knocked over our bottle twice and our entire table once when she fell over. Nice right?

Being promoters from Atlanta..and knowing the overall costs of the evening..they could have sold 500 less tickets and still made a good amount of profit and kept it comfortable for the partons inside (considering Sasha was paid $75,000..not the $100,000 that was posted on here earlier in the month)

I do feel that the safety of the club partons was compromised at Avalon. In Atlanta, the fire marshall would have shut this party down in a heartbeat...leaving everyone in the cold. Are the fire code laws different in NY? Here If the marshall does come in to the club..and cannot walk a straight line from the front to the back of the club..the party is shut down.

Posted by djBrandonC on Jan-02-2004 21:56:

I also flew in from Atlanta for this night. I am by far one of the biggest Sasha fans alive, and I thought it was a completely wasted trip. This event was waaaaay oversold and a rip off in my opinion. Sasha's set was still incredible, don't get me wrong, but it was too hard to enjoy with a bunch of dumbshits knocking me and my girlfriend around. It litterally took us 30 minutes to walk from the main floor to the smoke area, and by the time we got there our full drinks were empty due too the dumbshits. I had planned on staying until close, but was utterly pissed off with it being way to crowded, so I ended up leaving around 4. The funny thing is, they were still letting people in when we left. I would have gladdly payed more money for a ticket if it insured that the club would not be overcrowded. Avalon itself is a great club, I guess it was just the wrong night to go...

Posted by EV Junkie on Jan-02-2004 22:00:

the safety was clearly compromised. Anyone with malintentions could have easily creamed us all in there...

memories of Space at last year's wmc resonated in my mind...especially the night when tiesto and okie spun .... total chaos and too many people, it is just too dangerous.

Posted by fr0st on Jan-02-2004 22:17:

I stayed for the duration. The place was way overcrowded till about 3am. sashas set was pretty standard nothing special i thought he would have played some classics like heaven scent, OBE, water from a vine leaf, purple, ohmna, be as one.... but he didnt. The "fucking electricity" track was fucking baddass though along with all the really hard tracks and breaks he played he played.. Im a die hard sasha fan, but ill have to say sander was prolly a better show. Or digweed in LA for the matter.
