DJs and drugs

am I being ignorant and naiive to think that the top DJs are doing barely any drugs? I mean I see tiesto, armin, pvd, ferry, sasha, oakey, etc all the top DJs and they look they really keep it clean

from what I understand pvd had some sort of anti-drug champaign and I saw an interview of armin where he said all he does is drink, but what about the others?

Posted by armandzadza on Feb-20-2004 03:28:

PvD and Diggers keep it really clean...not Sasha or Oakie, though!

There were days where deejays were known more for their drug consumption than their deejaying skills.

Sasha (one of the most famous cainers of all time, found drunk and coked out in a ditch in ibiza about 90 mins before a set and he went on to play the greatest set of his life)

Brandon Block
Alex P (both heavy drug abusers at times)

Marc Spoon (not really a dj imo but a true drug addict, got arrested for E in Ibiza)

Tall Paul (Cokehead)

Sandra Collins (cokehead from what i've heard)

Oakenfold (cokenfold to some)

Tiesto (cokehead)

i bet most deejays have done drugs at some point and some continue to do it. Heck it killed Ron Hardy and Larry Levan (both house godfathers, hardy was an inspiration to ppl that started techno and levan was an inspiration to many). Both died because of their drug habits that caught up with them.

thats really not the point of this thread... and who said I cared whether they did or not?

Posted by JulesPLees on Feb-20-2004 05:34:

I just reckon that if the DJ's are doing their job then the drugs they consume (or dont) is their business

i could add such a long list...

and have many stories too... but I will just stfu

Posted by itsTrueSonic on Feb-20-2004 06:53:

sorry for bringing this up ... but isn't it true that many of the top djs spin their best mixes while 'stoned' or 'high' or whatever ... it seems like when u are in that sedated state, the sounds and beats you are spinning are going at an eccelectic pace through your ears, so u know what to spin next ... just my opinion ..

Please expound on your stories!! I love this shit! Funny, I've wondered the same thing for a long time too. Drugs do crazy things, love to see a DJ messed up!

Alcohol is a drug too. So I guess every DJ is guilty of that sin. Just because its legal doesnt mean its healthy or right. Alcohol alters brain chemistry in many ways like euphoria inducing drugs out there. Its just all on different levels.

i don't agree with naming and shaming dj's and there drug use. I think it's there private life and should not be splattered all over the internet...

i don't really care if a dj takes drugs, as long as s/he plays a good set. i just thik it's a bit pathetic people wanting to know names of drugged up dj's

Posted by dukes on Feb-20-2004 10:19:

ive been curious about this for ages but just to see if my non-drug aproach to djing was abnormal. i never take drugs bar alcohal and even then i cant play as well drunk as sober.

am i the freak of the Dj world?

well you are from aberdeen so more than likely yes....

Posted by dukes on Feb-20-2004 10:32:

i just thought in sports drugs increase performance in an unnatural way hence frowned apon should this not be the same in the Dj world? would that then make PvD undisputed god as he seems to be the only one who dont touch them hence his skills being him and not a personified drug?

and ummm JON CARTER! there is another one :P

good reply :P

the drugs dj's use are purely recreational and enhance performance in no way what so ever. sport is a million miles from club culture, so to compare them is silly.

just because they "USED" to take drugs does not mean that they cant be anti-drugs now.
its called having the ability to change your mind.

so ur trying to tell me that even though i take drugs i have the right to tell other people not to take any? thats bullshit

Posted by Sevari on Feb-20-2004 11:40:

I hate to be drunk when I am spinning, I think you can get to a higher state just be spinning the right tunes and read the crowd corrrectly and feel their respons etc.
Thats just my op...

but you said he used to take them as in passed tense. if he still took them then yes he would be a hypocrit but going by the way you put it it sounds like he only used to take and not anymore.

see what i mean?

Seen Jon Carter play before and he was out of it, couldnt even do basic tasks like match beats. James Zabiela is Tee Total, no drink, no drugs no smoke. usually has a bottle of water with him njust, Picotto is fond of his Champagne Sven Vath is another Coke head. i like toplay when im sober, played in my house over christmas at a party and towards the end i had about 7-8 cans in me and its really hard. and was Lisa Lashes not got with a few wingers in her record bag?? she got off with it too.

Posted by RIP_Technics on Feb-20-2004 12:17:

if someone used to take drugs then quit and started an anti-drugs campaign, then they have 1st hand knowledge of wat they can do to u and so make the best anti-drugs ppl.

dance music culture was found on drugs.most clubbers use drugs. most djs used to be clubbers.why should they stop, if they do? i take drugs occasionally myself. if i were ever to be a big dj, i would probably still take drugs occasionally. and f*ck you if you dont like it.
