New Southern Sun remix/bootleg?

Hey all,

Don't know who was listening to Judge Jules' show on Radio 1 today, but he played a new remix or bootleg of Southern Sun called "Fatkid - Southern Sun." It was just the vocals of the song with a very different more trancey feeling to it than any of the other ones released. Now Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Tiesto Unreleased Remix) is my fav song of all-time along with a couple others, but this one was different and added a new variation to the wikkid vocals and was kinda cool. Just curious if anyone has any info on this or did anyone else here it and what their opinions are??

Cheers,
Terry

Not sure if you're joking or something, but just in case:

Haven't heard this bootleg. Southern Sun is one of my all-time favorites too (meaning I'm probably doomed to disappointment by this version) but I'm curious nonetheless.

To be honest, I'm not sure which one was released or not and which one you're referring to, but I'm talking about the one with the lyrics NOT from Bunkka as they suck. The very first time Tiesto played this track at Dutch Dimension 9hr set is the one I'm talkin about.

i heard jules play toxic (britney spears). thats going too far imo

what that has to do with southern sun i don't know

Posted by Bemps on Mar-28-2004 07:34:

yeah, I never liked the vocals in this.

There are two remixes by Tiesto, the ISOS3 (the one played in dutch dimension) and the one on vinyl. Oakenfold claimed that the vocals on the unreleased version sounded too depressive, so they had to make some more "uplifting" vocals in order to get it released, stupid decision imo. :<

Now this is something I don't understand. The difference of the lyrics of the released and unreleased mix are about 2 words... doesn't really make much of a difference.

Posted by danielsebastian on Mar-28-2004 19:44:

Yep, there are a few sentences changed, like

unreleased: 'cause it's easier to have dreamt

released: 'cause it's easier to fly :S

unreleased: than to find somewhere I feel sincerity

released: than to face another night of southern sun

unreleased: I'm tempted to throw my senses in

released: I'm tempted to throw myself to sea

Guess there's some more changes as well..

I'm just picky and I hate Cokenfold

There was a bit about this bootleg in the latest edition of mixmag but they wouldn't give many details.

Realized this difference the moment I got the mp3.
Damn, and I bought the vinyl hoping that it was the unreleased version, which it of course wasn't.
I later found out it wasn't gonna get released :/
The unreleased ISOS3/Dutch Dimension version owns the released one.

The Tisto remix on my vinyl even fades out like atleast one minute before it ends :/ The Perfecto release...

Btw, I heard a 2004 remix of Southern Sun some weeks ago.
And it was reallly nice! That's all I remember really... think there were some guitars in it too.

I've wondered this too, especially since the difference has seemed significant to me from day one.

There are a few reasons I found, foremost being the tone of the vocal run itself. Even though only some of the lyrics were changed, Carla Werner had to sing the entire vocal over again (multiple times, I'm sure) to get a new cut, possibly for multiple mixes.

I have an old-lyrics demo rip of the Gabriel & Dresden Remix, and this seems to confirm my suspicions. The vocal is decidedly different from that of the released version, in more ways than just the lyrics. I see no reason why the Tiesto remix would be any different in this regard, and indeed, it sounds different to me (taking the higher BPM into account, by the way).

It's also worth noting that I've isolated additional vocal effects in the Tiesto and Gabriel & Dresden liveset rips that are not included in the final release of either. The Tiesto tweaked the end of "insincerity", and the background 'vocal howl' in the Gabriel & Dresden demo mix is unmistakable (cue Dave Dresden posting and saying 'you're wrong.' )

The best way I can put it is that the unreleased vocals have soul. The released ones, well, don't. They sound emptier in emotion and delivery.

Yeah like...
Released: "Southern suuuuun"
Unreleased: "Sincerityy-yy"

But back to my original point, nobody's heard this track yet but me?? It is different, but really good.

Do you have a sample? :/

Can't get a sample. But if you go to the Radio 1 site to listen to their past week, click on Jules' and it's at the 17:50 mark (as in 5:50PM, not 17:50 minutes in).

Tiesto's mix of Southern Sun is one of my all time favourite classics!!! I have many fond memories of playing this to some awesome reactions!!!

I heard the Mix Jules played and i was very dissappointed... The vocal sounded out of time imo and other than the vocal, it is nothing really like SS...

Shame to start bootlegging a track that is only a couple of years old anyway imo...

Didn't get to hear it but just got confirmed that the remix played at the show (at the tracklisting I pasted earlier) is the same one as the one you mentioned.

At the bottom of Neo & Farina's set.

Fatkid - Southern Sun is btw a production/remix by Neo & Farina himself
I really liked this remix

This new remix is now on vinyl and you can buy it @ Juno.co.uk
They have a short sample on the site for those who want to listen.
It's pretty average, but I need to have a proper listen to fully judge it.

Dont think its that special either.

Heres the juno sample:

Southern Sun (Fluffy Unimaginative Dutch Trance Epic Riff Remix)

Total gash. An embarassment to the original. Completely loses the mood of the song and strips everything creative away to replace it with the most generic elements possible.
