What do you say to them?

Was just curious, like when your non-trance-enlightened mates come over and they see your setup and they go like 'wow way cool' n shit n the next thing they say is 'so show me what u can do dude !!'...

then they expect u to get on the decks instantly and start scratching and tearing your vinyls to shreds... what do u do or say ?

I go like.. 'erm dude I can't do THAT but if u hang around for maybe say... 45 mins or more I might be able to show u what I can do??'

Then I have to explain we are more mixologists then turntablists and yada yada yada...

What about you guys and similar experiences?

I don't have friends like that, I told them all to piss off, as for my other friends that have come round and I showed them, they enjoyed listening to my mixes.

Posted by dj chex on Apr-04-2004 07:01:

it gets annoying. People automatically think you must be a turntablist if you are a dj. However, i still would like to learn how to scratch as another tool i can pull out of my hat.

Posted by FC`Noir on Apr-04-2004 07:15:

"non-trance-enlightened" friends? What're those?!!

Posted by dj chex on Apr-04-2004 07:44:

i don't know about everyone else; but i do try and have a good variety of music to spin. In the past 6months i've been spinning more tech-housey sort of stuff than trance.

Posted by FC`Noir on Apr-04-2004 07:46:

I think what he meant, Chex.. was people who have no clue what electronica music is. Who think that people who have turntables scratch hip hop music only.

Posted by Zombie0729 on Apr-04-2004 08:27:

i can defiently relate. Everytime we have parties(which is a lot) someone who goes into my room to smoke or whatever always comes out and asks me to DJ for everyone else(100+ people) i'm like "ehhh dude, i don't think people will want me on there." Is it really worth it to have a different person every 2minutes come up to you and ask you to change it?

Posted by Floorfiller on Apr-04-2004 08:32:

hehehe...i don't think that i could scratch up my wonderful vinyl...my precious...we's loves the precious...

Posted by Freak on Apr-04-2004 17:00:

I tell them to go nuts if they want a go themselves- most of my friends have come to work with me at some point- or are djs themselves, and have seen me work.
The novelty of mixing in your bedroom wears off somewhat when you do it several nights a week

Posted by DjSimonB on Apr-04-2004 17:44:

I usually at least tell them to be careful, and say I'm more into mixing than scratching...

Posted by rafale on Apr-04-2004 19:37:

the point is... these people who are unenlightened in the ways of trance... are unaware that we are not scratching out sounds and music. It saddens me, people, to find that there are people who actually think scratching a record back and forth creates melodies.

I was playin MIDOR and six4eight - No Man's Land.. on traktor and cueing up my next record on my decks and mates actually tought i was PLAYING No Man's Land !

IT REALLY SADDENS ME.
THEY THINK ALL DJS ARE TURNTABLISTS.

You should really check out some turntablist stuff- maybe the DMC competitions.....you would see stuff that would blow your statement to hell....

Does get annoying but if you really love waht you do you will take the time to enlighten them.

I wish they'd all sit in a group so I can just tell em ONCE and for ALL.

Posted by dj chex on Apr-05-2004 06:57:

you can think mtv for making everyone who DJs a turntablist automatically. Thanks MTV for dj clue, funk flex, and all the other people who forgot what it's all about and screwing up people's minds by making them think "if you have turntables, that mixer thingy, you can definately scratch like clue..."

Those bastards......

Posted by ESMdjm600 on Apr-18-2004 01:04:

whoa wat an ignorant statement that last one was.... u act as if these men havent worked their asses off to get where they are, mtv or otherwise.... u said they forgot wat its all about???? wat are u talkin about??? with hip hop it used to be all about the dj in the 80s when authentic hip hop was first coming around, and that notion has long been forgotten and its guys like flex and clue who are trying their hardest not to let their artform be forgotten.... and i really dont get y its mtv whos at fault in ur mind, i dont think ive ever seen a hip hop d.j. do their thing on mtv

Posted by ESMdjm600 on Apr-18-2004 01:06:

frankly i wish they would show more of these guys doin sets on mtv, get hip hop back to its roots for godsakes... id say its about god damn time, sick of the bling bling era

Posted by BeatSMiTH on Apr-18-2004 01:19:

Hey man, in regards to what u would say to your friends, tell them the truth! Don't be ashamed of spinning trance man. Real friends understand when u're serious about something. I only have a few friends who like electronica, so when all my other hip hop (or pop rap these days) ask me to play something, I just tell them, "I only play trance so u wouldn't be interested."

Posted by dj chex on Apr-18-2004 08:22:

I've seen lots of turntablists that spend lots of time practicing and working on their skills. While most pop-rap stuff i see on mtv where the dj always seems to sport bling-bling and the most they can do is a baby scratch. Im no turntablist but for gods sake! what's with that baby scratch? I want to see real artists like dj shadow, z-trip, beat junkies, with mcs and rappers doing it like they did in the 80s. Im at least glad for the mixmaster mike and others that are on tv that are talented.

hijack attempt: what do you say to em when they ask you if they can try to mix?

Posted by rafale on Apr-18-2004 10:22:

I'm not ashamed at all for playing trance and I don't think any of us here will be ashamed either hehe.

Sometimes i just explain to them that.. ALL I'M DOING as a trance dj.. is play 10 songs in a row, and make em flow so smoothly that it sounds like one whole song .. and take your mind for a trip=>

Inertia normally I'll let them have a go.. i'll say 'knock yrselves out' or sumthing.. and the first thing they will ask me is 'is it okay if i scratch?' and coz i've got cheap needles i'll say go ahead.

and they'll get bored of scratching after a while and thats that.

Posted by Inertia on Apr-18-2004 15:53:

you ever teach em how to mix though?

my friends and brothers would get WAY to bored really fast before they would invest any sort of significant time into it

Posted by Inertia on Apr-19-2004 04:20:

hmm, a few times ive have to go over the theory to mixing to some friends, and a lot of chicks too, since DJing is the latest thing they want to do it. pisses me off, but i cant just jump and say "no, youre a poser, im not letting you touch the decks." always ends the same way, with them getting pissed and bored because they cant do it.

kinda sucky when you have to do it over and over not to seem like an ass.
