hrmmm.. id say Scarface would be a contender for the greatest movie of all time

Posted by escee on Apr-18-2004 13:27:

personally i thought scarface was a bit weak.

especially comparing to the absolute masterpiece that godfather 2 is.

Posted by Joshva on Apr-18-2004 13:47:

I'm watching Godfather II now.

Posted by Synchronized on Apr-18-2004 13:50:

Godfather I and II are a couple of my favourite movies.. Im also watching it now

Posted by Psygnosis on Apr-18-2004 13:58:

Godfather is legendry, all 3 parts were awesome and couldn't have had a better ending to finish it off.

The Sorpranos is a great contendor for all of them, it being a series makes it even better IMO.

Posted by escee on Apr-18-2004 14:24:

THERE IS NO PART 3!
(in the same vein as when a father says i have no son...)

and i agree psygnosis, sopranos is good, but not as good as the godfather movies.

i got the series on dvds, the pine barrens episode in series 3 classic. favourite episode from all the series

series 1 is the best though.

godfather 2 is perhaps the only movie I can think of which actually surpassed its original. my opinion

Anyone who says it doesn't deserve to be amongst the greatest films of all time is kidding themselves.

From IMDB:
User Rating: 8.9/10 (54,727 votes) top 250: #3

Only beaten by Shawshank Redemption and Godfather Part I

werd webscheister!!!

i find those imdb rankings reflect my tastes (and i guess the vast majority of movie-lover's as well) perfectly.

i've seen all of those films ranked in the top 20 (cept seven samurai) and although i may swap em around, they do deserve there placings at the top - cept the LOTR films. personally, they wouldn't be in my top 100.

and phil mate, next time i see you, remind me to kill you. dont forget. NEVER disrespect Coppola. NEVER.

hahaha
well my dad has directors cut of apocalypse now at home, thats by coppola isnt it? if i watch that do i get out of being killed? ill take a slight maiming, but i would prefer to still be alive afterwards.

Posted by imabug on Apr-19-2004 03:11:

i've got the godfather series, scarface, casino, goodfellas on dvds... i have to say casino is up there with godfather 2

Posted by escee on Apr-19-2004 03:15:

casino is just goodfellas with more money thrown at it. Its good, but not comparable to the godfather movies imo.

werd to the lotr movies not being in the top 100 too.

its uncanny how similar these two movies are. pesci reprising his role as the much-loved, short-tempered misfit. actually thinking about it now, its hard for me to even seperate certain scenes...

yeh watch it phil! apocalyspe now is a trip, you come out of it feeling somewhat disorientated. but not disorientated enough to escape death.

Posted by webmeister on Apr-19-2004 06:39:

Apocalypse Now is an absolutely brilliant film, I don't know of any war film that has a more arresting battle scene than those helicopters swooping out of the dawn with Wagner booming...

Posted by tathi on Apr-19-2004 06:47:

havn't seen any of the Godfather series yet 8)

in the movie thread in the COR everyone was raving about scarface, i hired it, was not bad (just not that good :P )

agree that apocalypse now is absolutely brilliant, best war movie ever

full metal jacket can't even compare (and i'm a huge kubrick fan)

Posted by fcuk on Apr-20-2004 06:53:

Godfather 2 is a masterpiece. Godfather 1 is also good but Part 2 has de niro who plays a good role as the young andolini. part 3 is okay. it kind of dissapointed me though, however the ending is superb and keeps that touch coppola is good at.

Posted by christos on Apr-20-2004 07:01:

scarface is king for me! Especially when we have a ritual of watching it every night after a club and falling asleep during the best bits...hehe...freakish fan I's is.

Posted by JulesPLees on Apr-20-2004 07:15:

Goodfellas ownz...

"Carrie.......carrie, you shouldnt have flushed the coke Carrie...that was our whole stash Carrie"

Posted by gokz on Apr-20-2004 08:56:

if you watched godfather 2 on tv, then you're a dick. BUY THE BOXSET!

Posted by bassaholix on Apr-20-2004 13:34:

What about Platoon... one of the greatest war movies ever as well... and not to mention Saving Private Ryan... it shits on Blackhawck down anytime of the week... even on those dodgy leap years!

Haven't seen Godfather part 2, only part 1, 3 not gonna bother, they reckon its a waste!

btw haven't seen Apocalypse now or watever thats called...

Posted by A.J. on Apr-21-2004 05:40:

I agree with the statement directly above me.

War movies kick ass! Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket etc etc are masterpieces. I would have to say that my favourite movies are probably either war movies or gangster movies.

Oh yeah, i forgot about Bridge Over the River Kwai. That is an absolute classic, even after all these years.

Posted by lethal on Apr-21-2004 06:09:

If were talking really old war films nothing beats The Guns Of Navarone.

As for other just old films that are really good:
The Day of The Jackal (awesome awesome film - dont even put it in the same sentence as that piece of shit Bruce Willis flick the Jackal!)

The Italian Job (the original is just a complete and utter classic)

The Labyrinth (Nuff said)

Nosferatu (This 1922 silent film version of the dracula story is amazing, especially when you remember its 1922! Awesome sfx for its day and would have absolutley scared the shit out of its audience back then!)
