Will You Pay for MP3's ?

Now its become apparnt to the powers at be, the MP3 is not going anywhere, many record labels have decided to try and embrace it by offering their entire backcatalouge, and no doubt all their next releases as digital downloads (.mp3's) for like 1 ($1.5 / E1.5).

Although if u know where to look, u can still get all their backcatalouge, and future releases for free, will u do the right thing and pay for them?

Cool

i won't be paying for mp3s, im sure my contribution to the vinyl market somewhat makes up for it

I don't see any differences between 2 & 3 :-/

I'll (hopefully) second that one day

I'm keeping my money for albums and whatnot, not mp3 downloads. Downloading only gives you a compressed version of the song. I'm not going to pay for that compressed stuff. If I want to buy something and rip it myself, then I'm going to buy a tangible album. No way am I going to pay for something that's not the full quality.

Posted by Tranc3 on Apr-25-2004 05:14:

I would if they didn't offer a lossy format, that's the main thing stopping me.

Posted by noikeee on Apr-25-2004 10:14:

Honestly no. Rather go vinyl, even if it costs a fortune, has worse sound quality (i know this is discutible, but i prefer the clearness of digital format), can be damaged easily, etc.

I'd might consider buying FLAC's or WAV's though, because of the quality, but as i still have 'the dream' of becoming a dj, downloading tracks somehow doesn't give you credibility vinyl gives, even if it's full quality and legal. General mentalities may change in the future so it's something i may consider.

I will d/l for free because I buy the vinyl/cd if it's good

Posted by UnBracKo on Apr-25-2004 14:42:

I won't pay. My contribution to the scene is buying vinyls and mp3's help me to know what vinyls to buy.

still dl'ing for free but am willing to pay when completely necessary

Posted by T:REBEL on Apr-28-2004 16:46:

Mp3's aren't for me.

I stream then I buy.

Posted by beema on Apr-29-2004 05:44:

If at somepoint I get a laptop w/ final scratch, I would definatley buy mp3's -- as long as they are high quality (256kbps +).

Posted by Dj Dizzy on Apr-29-2004 21:02:

i'll still buy cd's but no way in hell am i gonna pay for an mp3

Posted by CityKitty on May-02-2004 20:51:

Dunno

why pay if you can get them for free

Posted by skip on May-04-2004 14:01:

i'll pay for something concrete! and in my case it's cds, not vinyl and it will stay like that! i'd never pay for an mp3 or anything like that! those fucking suck IMO.

i'd rather see the industry going this way:
you could choose the tracks you wish and they'd make a cd out of those and ship it to you. or something similar!

In my opinion, all this $1-a-tune and itunes and mycokemusic.com and corporate wank like that, is the last throw of the dice for the big record label corporations.

They are desperately trying to cling on to the established structure of music distribution they've set up over the last few decades, where 95% of the profit goes onto the balance sheet of some mega-corporation, and sod all goes to the artist

I think they're pushing shit up hill to be honest. We have had the technology for quite a while now, that allows any old member of the public to engage in studio-quality-recording-on-a-home-pc and distribute their record to the world over the net. To be honest it has made the whole concept of a 'record label' kind of obsolete. The role that they provide - being the middle man between the artists and the public - has become totally unnecessary.

I would love to give my favourite artists $1 for each of their tunes that I download, if I can verify that it's actually going to the people who wrote the tune. Needless to say, pigs will fly before the RIAA lets that happen

I expect that there will be a few large scale bankruptcies over the next few years, and a lot of kicking and squealing from the record labels and the RIAA, before they realize their own uselessness and just die the natural death.

Posted by Thunder5 on May-05-2004 21:57:

I'd pay for them...

Though not as much as for vinyl...

As when buying a vinyl you get something concrete, not just another pile of data on your harddrive.

Posted by 3xx3r7 on May-06-2004 01:49:

I would only pay a minimal fee if I would get access to huge database with shitload of tracks/livesets.

Other than that kthnxno.

Posted by Spin Doctor on May-06-2004 02:08:

Im with Luke on this one. I buy enough vinyl to more than make up for the one or two tracks I download now and then.

Posted by XeQtOr on May-07-2004 14:19:

The labels should sell .wavs of their tracks or atleast 320kbps mp3s before i would start buying anything. If they would sell wavs you could burn them on cd and play them out without the audience hearing any difference to a normal cd.

Posted by PHALPAX on May-10-2004 19:27:

I usually don't pay for EDM because there is sooo much out there and so much to listen to...I'd go broke o quickly if I had to pay .99 cents a song.
